As said by my good friend Taxman:

Ok, it's been a long time between drinks... but the Retro-Sonic website has finally been updated/redesigned with new info and screens

http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/pics/TitleScreen.PNG

removed due to it's usage of WinCE libs

Big News? Retro-Sonic's engine is pretty close to completion, I've finally started doing the levels again... and Retro-Sonic has been successfully ported to Dreamcast! I've decided to release the Dreamcast version on July 8/9th due to popular demand... it's a proof of concept thing rather than a demo... there'll be around 3 zone tests to play. I'm saving the PC version for the proper demo (with complete original levels) that's due out a bit later (this will be released on DC too)

So yeah... have a look and tell me what you think :)

http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/pics/VolcanicTower01.PNG

P.S. Here's the Dreamcast Proof of Concept Build!! It's not perfect, but it's quite groovy, the levels are ordered in terms of completion... so expect the gameplay to get very beta-esque as you go on lol

It's a Nero Image, just burn and play (it's self boot)

You may have to take the data out of the image file, burn it onto a disc and use a bootloader, but apparently Taxman fixed this. Great work!

I have no idea why you edited out the download link, but here it is: link removed due to the use of WinCE libs

(the link is not on the Retro Sonic site)

What i can say about it? Game usues illegal files stolen from commercial DC game - Midways Greatests Arcade Hits. I am sure about them:

- wince libs
- 1st_read bin
- midawy_1.exe

so ... should be removed from dcemu.

This is like the sonic 4 we have all been waiting for. This is also the best homebrew ive tried for dreamcast. Even for a "test build" this plays perfectly. When they start using the legal libs, i most likely will start a site/scene devoted to this and its mods.

Why'd they even choose to use wince? Doesn't really make any sense to me.

Just one question - will this game feature a level editor? The reason I ask is because of the "Custom Levels" option on the title screen snapshot??

Yes, it will come with a fully operational Level editor for PC.

The Taxman is also trying to use the development kit for the next release, and dump WinCE.

EDIT: I think its funny that im still counted as a Newbie even though i registed on Nov 2004. I'm really a lurker most of the time, lol.

somebody made a youtube vid of this for dreamcast. Note that its only blinking cause of the camera. The gameplay is super smooth and u can play as knunkles as well with all the moves.

When I first bumped into that YouTube video, before seeing this topic, it took me a while to realise that it wasn't a rom of Sonic 2! I only figured it out when I noticed how Sonic rotates down hills like in Sonic Advance, and that the jump sound effect was from Sonic CD.

- midawy_1.exe

I checked the plain files and it's definitly not using files from Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits.

The file "Midway_1.exe" is used by all WinCE apps (e.g. BoobBoy, Sintendo, QuakeDC, etc.).

However, using the WinCE dev kit is not exactly welcome nor legal, but I can confirm that only the needed DLL files are included, not the entire WinCE DLL archive.

If this isn't available at DCEmu UK, then QuakeDC should be removed from DCHomebrew.org also.

In my opinion this release should be tolerated, but Taxman still should port it to KallistiOS as soon as possible to avoid any such problems in the future.

It's a port of the Windows version of Retro Sonic.

True, it was ported by the author himself - but since the Dreamcast was not the original platform for the engine, it is indeed a port.

there is a debate over this, Wince is open source (to a degree) but this may not include the Dreamcast version, as its different and sega my have join rights with MS with it.... its hard to tell

you can follow the debate here

Sorry about bringing this old topic again, but i'm having troubles burning this game!

I''ve burned the NRG image with NERO 6.3.0.3 Ultra Edition, and the CD is a cluster!

I've burned the same image with Alcohol 120% and the program just goes crazy in the end! (18945% completed??? )

I've extracted the plain files from the CD, and burned the files with BootDreams using CDRecord option, and the SEGA logo screen appears, then some blue lines appear in the top and bottom of the SEGA logo, and just freezes.
I removed the 00000000.000 dummy file in this burn.

Can anyone help plz?? :S

Tnx in advance!

Yeah, that's Retro Sonic. As usual it looks much better on Dreamcast than on this YouTube video.

I am not sure if it's still beeing worked on. It's a real shame the project didn't get the support it deserved by DCEmu UK and DCEmulation.com just because of it using WinCE instead of KallistiOS - and while QuakeDC and GypPlay does.

Anyway, for those who missed it, I've mirrored the download over at Dreamcast-Scene.com:

Is there by any possible chance someone can put specific directions up on how to burn this game seeing as people are having trouble doing it themselves.

I wouldnt call it unsupport, nonsupport, whatever. DCemu likes to provide free and legal homebrew. WinCE development on dreamcast still seems to be a gray area. You said yourself a while ago that he planned on releasing it using a legal Dev kit. He has our full support even if we cant host his project here just yet. I am very glad it's still in development, as I'm sure a lot of people are.

Yeah, I think the staff does agree that discussion and download links for RetroSonic are no problem - it's just that DCEmu UK itself won't mirror the download.

Hm, what problems are there exactly ? Which program are you using to burn the game ? What version of the game do you use - the CDI repack from Dreamcast-Scene.com or the original (Nero ?)
