Glu Mobile has launched an innovative location-based game for iPhone, which uses GPS and Google Maps around a Pokemon-style collecting dynamic. The game is called 1000: Find 'Em All! and it launched on the App Store last night - the title has shades of Nintendo's 'Gotta Collect 'Em All!' slogan from the past.
Players guide a character around the game world, trying to find 1,000 special items.
However, it's the location features that are interesting. One involves sprinkling items on a Google Map of the player's current location, and getting them to physically walk to the items to find them.
Meanwhile, another feature involves 'gifter' characters appearing from local Wi-Fi hotspots - I found one from Chicago Rock Cafe in Bishop's Stortford last night, for example - who offer more items.
It's an intriguing game, and certainly far removed from the big brands that Glu made its name with. It's the latest sign of how iPhone is re-stimulating the creativity of mobile games firms.
