Internet giant appeals to US communities to register their interest in having its new fibre-optic network
Not content with being the world’s top search engine, Google is now planning to build ultra high-speed networks across several locations in the US.
According to a recent blog by the firm, it will create a fibre-optic network delivering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to between 50,000 and 500,000 homes
“Our goal is to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better and faster for everyone,” wrote product managers Minnie Ingersoll and James Kelly.
“We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it's creating new bandwidth-intensive ‘killer apps’ and services, or other uses we can't yet imagine.”
Google’s network will be ‘open access’ – offering users a choice of internet service providers. The firm is appealing to local communities to register their interest in having the network in their area. Interested parties have until 26 March to respond.
