View Full Version : Whats the Best of the Best Releases for the PSP Homebrew Scene

wraggster
July 17th, 2006, 20:07
The PSP Homebrew scene since it started (and yeah we were here way before it started) has delivered some masterpieces of Emulators, Games and Applications, many of the very best released by the excellent coders who come to our site and forums.

To newcomers it must be overwhelming the amount of releases, so as a little project for those who are bored and feel the need to post, whats the very best that the PSP scene has to offer.

Lets see what releases are said over and over again :)

emu's:
snes: snesTy
genesis: Dgen
neogeocd mame: Neogeo cd emu by Nj
gameboy/color: RIN
nes: nesterJ
all these essentially full speed. these are the reasons for psp IMHO

Apps:
devhook: OMG web and new games on 1.5?!?!?!
IRshell: mp3's during homebrew. nuffsaid.

homebrew games:
supermariowar: just awesome
commander keen: ported and fun

what's NOT the best?
NOT smashgpsp, sorry oafan; but i do beleive its horrible. It in no way mimicks the n64 game and people dont fly with proportion to damge. also the levels are bad. unless this was changed, its bad.

Gameboyadvance and N64 don''t work well enough to play YET. Gameboy advance is very close, watch for it. N64 may be possible but not likely. while they are neat, they wont keep anyone occupied on a cartrip. GBA maybe for rpg...=-)

custom firmware, devhook, and 2.x downgraders

i think the same, the emulators arent the most important homebrew because without the dwongraders it wouldnt exist so many 1.5 psp's

I agree with Satty, Supermariowar is awsome, and I think smashgpsp is way too over rated.

Here's what's on my memory stick:

NeoGeo: NeoGeo CDZ (You can save states...)

SNES: snestyl 0.4.2 (snapshot function is awesome...gui is very well done...great model for other emulators)

NES: NesterJ

Genesis: I use both DGen 1.50 and PSPGenesis...some games won't play on DGen (ie. Warsong) and some won't play on PSPGenesis (ie. Megalomania which also refuses to load w/ DGen 1.60)

Waiting anxiously for VBA running on the media engine for speed improvements...

I use Xtreme Loader 2.6 (a modified RunUMD w/ English language so you can see save game text) which plays all UMDs up to 1.52 fine...after 1.52, it's hit and miss...

DevHook confuses me too much right now though it looks promising...if the latest version can play the Untold Legends 2 UMD with movies and withOUT stalling at the notorious freeze points, then it will definitely have a spot on my memory stick...

I've tried Descent and Doom for the PSP and they're dead on, and perhaps worth it, if you're a huge fan AND if you have ready access to the PIG and HOG files for Descent and the WAD files for Doom...I couldn't get used to the controls though...and too much room on the memory stick...I figured Duke Nukem would have the same control issues so I didn't try...very talented people coding those bits, but it's difficult to overcome the lack of a keyboard...(for me)

As for tools on the PC (not technically homebrew, but invaluable), I use SEI PSP Tool v0.5 to load homebrew onto my 1.5 and I use PBP Unpacker in case the embedded art doesn't quite match my tastes...excellent artwork on the backgrounds/icons thread on this site...

And as mentioned previously, if you're buying a PSP brand new (I suggest eBay...although you missed your chance at people selling their 1.5s for dirt cheap due to lack of quality UMD titles right before 1.5s became a hot commodity for homebrew), then a downgrader is an absolute must...but I've never had to worry about that so I have no idea which ones work and which ones brick your PSP...

I love the emulators...no interest in multi-player gaming...no interest in surfing the web...just love playing the classic consoles on a handheld...

PSP Doom (Must....get....idclip)
Nester J NES
SNES Tyl
NGEPSP
MAME (more games needed though)
DGEN
Homers Rin
VBA (needs more games)
Devhook
Game Sound Emu
Daedalus (still in progress and yet I like it alreadY)
PSPPlayer
Attack Of The Mutants

IMHO Smash GP gets too much hype!

I would have to say that the best App's for PSP have been

Dax & Jax loader,
and
SNES TYL .42 ME

just out of all the programs, these two realy stand out as quality work, and programs that were not easy to make..

Edit: Y's lua :D

jinqui242

Devhook 0.44
RIN (plays Zelda Oracle games perfectly, that's all I need)
SNESTYL
NESTERJ
NCDZPSP
DGEN

PSPlayerMT - Easier to play AVIs, no converting to custom containers. I'm on a Mac, so the PMP converters are a lot of extra work (Virtual PC, etc). I can just use FFMPEGX or Handbrake.

UMDEmulator 0.8c - Can play UMD movie dumps while Devhook still can't, as far as I know.

PMFPlayer 1.0 - Good for previewing PMFs so you can dummy movies; now we just need an encoder.

Hopefully soon VBAPSP can be added after speed improvements. I would love to play Minish Cap again on a brighter screen (not getting a DS, thank you).

the original downgrader (2.0 to 1.5) which allowed me to explore the world of homebrew...in my opinion had this not been made a lot of us 1.5'ers would have missed out the scene would have been smaller and most of the things like Devhook may not have come this far this fast.

GBA: VBAPSP
SNES: snes9xTYL

SNES TYL .42 ME - stunning interface and nearly 100% playability. 1,000's of options. This is heaven.

VBA - The last version proves that ZX-81 is an unholy force of awsome.

Daedalus - The fact that 3 months ago there was much debate, and now we have a 64 emu that is working and bordering on playable...terrifying.

But the big winners are: Downgraders!

Whether the first 2.0-1.5 back in October, or the most recent 2.6-1.5, these guys outsmart Sony everytime.

Going to go investigate:
- IRshell

i love any version of devhook(ataribob, the version on this site is the one that only loads umds and not the flaming files lol) i love daedulus. I think halo 2d is gonna be good(sorry to blow my own horn, but i think people should check it out) and soras adventure amond the other lua projects coming out in the near future. I would have to say PSP Revolution is one of the greatest homebrews i have ever played on the psp.

3. Bomberman Arena (still a WIP but great!)
4. ScummVM (currently on BASS)
5. SNESTyl (Super Star Wars at the mo!)

7. Beats of Rage (Asterix this week..)
8. KETM (1942 is a classic)

It is very hard to say which one homebrew is the est, so i'll list a few in each catgory:

Emulators: Deadalus N64 Emulator
Why: People said it was impossable, but we know now it is very possable.

Apps: Devhook
Why: Everyone on 1.5 ould play all homebrew, but not a 2.6 game. Now you can!

Games: Iris
Why: This is the best homebrew game ever. Its 3D and is ey user friendly to make levels. Very good game!

Btw, i in no way mean to hurt anyone elses feeling by not saying your homebrew is good. I think everyones homebrew is good, but these are just my personal favorites. So, i hope you dont think i hate you or something:p

tricky question. . .
Devhook (blatently pwnzu)
snes9xtyl

Look, it's like this, in order of Most important to coolest and best

MPH 2.0-1.5 downgrager(started it all)
Kxploit(without which homebrew would be a pain)
Fanjita's exploits(so many different names I just went with whats simple)

NesterJ
DGEN
Snes9xTYL
NGEPSP(amazing progress on this emulator)
PiMP Streamer
LUA Player

DaxZiso Loader and compression program

and last but certainly not least, the very best homebrew app for the PSP is the allmighty DEVHOOK!!!!!

I attribute Devhook to being the savior of the psp along with the 2.5/6 downgrader.

QueadlunnRau
July 18th, 2006, 21:07
Kxploit
2.0/2.5/2.6 downgrader's/downdater's
Fanjita's eloader's
RIN
DGEN
Snes9xTYL
NGEPSP (thank you -_-)
Super Mario War

Kxploit - hands down started it all for me, everyone with a 1.5 still using it today shows just how awesome this app is.

2.5/6 downgrader & Fanjita's eloader - What can I say, I was a sucker for Tales of Eternia and HAD to update my PSP to 2.5, but regretted everyday after, Fanjita's eloader is AWSOME but having to load GTA to play a quick emu game was definitely taxing.

ALL THE EMULATORS – Thousands of hours have been put in keeping us all happy, thank you all for bringing new life into all of the older systems and allowing me to relive a little of my youth. (DGEN, Snes9xTYL, RIN and NGEPSP stick out for me a little more tho ^_^)

ALL THE HOMEBREW – Again thousands of hours have been slaved away for us to have a little moment away from reality (super mario war currently holds my free time.)

Well, for me it is Bookr. The main reason I got my PSP was for reading ebooks. I wanted a small hand held device for doing so. Converting ebooks to images was a pain in the bum, but when Bookr came along and could read pdfs and maintain multiple bookmarks across multiple books, it was a godsend for me... I still, use my PSP mainly for reading ebooks. Its a great little device for that. Of course, I enjoy the emulators too, but Bookr was an essential application for my purposes and just what the doctor ordered.
