View Full Version : And In Other News, the PSP is Dead. Uh...Right?

Chubigan (http://blogs.ign.com/chubigans/) posted this article in response to the recent PSP is Dead Article posted a few days back:

Did you hear? The PSP is dead. It’s a handheld with no reason to exist. You own one you say? Better sell it while you can. It’s all over.

Wait a minute, you say. Who am I to say that it’s all over for the PSP? Well, I do have Joystiq on my side. And didn’t you see that Gamespot one year anniversary special video? Nearly all of them comment how they haven’t touched their PSP in weeks, months, etc.

You know this isn’t true. Here in the states, the PSP and DS sales have been neck and neck, with the PSP outselling the DS in May, only to have the DS take the lead in June. In Japan, the DS is a cultural phenomenon, yet the PSP overtook all consoles to be second in sales. Worldwide, the PSP has sold over fifteen million (yes, SOLD and not shipped). There are hundreds of PSP titles currently in development.

Yet nearly every week, there’s a gaming site that has nothing but dire doom for the PSP. This begs the question...why do gaming sites hate the PSP?

The Arguments

There are a certain number of things that journalists love to say about the PSP. I’m not confusing fact with opinion here...obviously anyone can say, “I don’t care for the PSP library,” have their reasons, and be exactly right. What I don’t understand are the certain connotations pinned on the PSP, and the certain phrases that seem to be a quick cut to the PSP’s jugular, yet obviously make no sense either. To name a few...

“The PSP lacks a killer app/doesn’t have a good library.”

Killer App. Every console has one. The DS has New Super Mario Bros. The Xbox has Halo. Sony has...not a single one.

Well, let’s back up and define killer app. It’s the game that everyone wants when they buy a console...if you’re buying a DS, you better get NSMB. Right now the 360 doesn’t quite have a KA, but come Halo 3 everyone will be rejoicing for their exclusive title. The PS2 lacks a clearly definable killer app, if only because many of them have gone multiplatform. Is Grand Theft Auto really the PS2’s killer app even though it has appeared on the Xbox? What about Metal Gear Solid? Yup, that one went multiplatform back in the day as well...and even though it looks like MGS is solidified as the exclusive Sony franchise, it still can’t be the one title that defines the PS2 (the PS3 is a different story). So where is the PSP’s one game that everyone can agree is the absolute must buy?

Metal Gear Ac!d 2...one of the most underrated games on the PSP.

Unfortunately, no one can agree. And I say unfortunately because people who see that no one can define a PSP KA automatically assume the handheld doesn’t have one.

Is it Wipeout Pure, whose graphics are incredible and downloadable content has spanned an entire year? No, because the handling/gameplay is a unique one that doesn’t appeal to everyone. What about Syphon Filter, who’s online multiplayer/voice chat and excellent story rival that of even console games? Why not Daxter? Hey, yeah...why NOT Daxter?

Oh Daxter, how you woo me with your fuzziness.

Daxter unfortunately lacks the character to carry a system. The game is amazing, but as far as Daxter being the definitive mascot for the PSP...no, he just doesn’t fit. For an example of someone who does fit, I turn to the long lost Crash Bandicoot. Remember those great Nintendo bashing commercials Crash used to do? He oozed mascot potential. The moment he went multiplatform was the day that the entire franchise slowed to a crawl...and the opportunity was lost.

Just looking at this game puts a big smile on my face.

Could Loco Roco be the killer app? It all depends on Sony. When you see a DS, Mario is not far from it. Sony needs to get as many Rocos around the PSP as possible, and MAKE the game the killer app. It has potential. It will sell well. It will be awesome.

“My PSP has been gathering dust over the last few months...”

My first reaction is always, “well, maybe you should find a less dusty place for your PSP then.”

This is something that comes up time and again. The connotation, of course, being that since their PSP is gathering so much dust, the game library must be slim’ pickings. Unfortunately if you’re not playing with your PSP every day of the week, then it’s obviously the PSP’s fault for not keeping you entertained, right?

Hey, my 360 has gathered dust over the last few months, but it was never an issue for me. I knew there would be a game released sooner rather than later that would get me back to my 360, and that game happened to be Prey. Quite the awesome game.

So why do so many make it a point to address how dust ridden their handheld gets? It’s a simple little jab that doesn’t mean much, but over time it’s gotten a little bit silly. Yes, your PSP is dusty. That’s why Sony included a cloth with every PSP, idiot. Use it and get back to me later.

“All I’ve been doing with my PSP lately is watch movies and listen to music.”

One of the more idiotic and ironic comments you can find all over the message boards...and it’s completely ridiculous. People love to say this as a way to jab into the PSP, almost as if there aren’t any games worth buying so they’re forced to, you know, take advantage of the other features Sony has put on the PSP.

Think about how insipid that comment is for a moment. Sony put the music and movies functionality so, you know, people would actually use it. So when you DO use it...how the hell can you complain about it? Do people actually watch movies on the PSP while simultaneously thinking, “man this sucks...I wish there were some decent games to play on the PSP.” If I ever thought that while watching a movie, I’d put my PSP down immediately, go outside, and enjoy the summer air. Thankfully that’s never happened to me and my skin is a radiant white that hasn’t mixed with those deadly UV rays you hear in the news these days (there’s a reason the PSP doesn’t play well in the sun: Sony is protecting you from global warming. Yet another reason why everyone should own one.)

I want to take a quick moment to point out something that everyone seems to glance over. The PSP has AMAZING functionality. Take a look at this amazing table I created thanks to a year of computer lab training on Excel-

But seriously, that damn computer lab taught me nothing.

Yes, I realize that last feature is a low blow, but seriously MS...fix it!!

Obviously that chart doesn’t tell the whole story. The browser is a bit limited and slow at times. Some stuff needs to be addressed (like jumping anywhere in a music file). The movie functionality needs improvement, as it’s a bit hard to put movies on the PSP without reading up on it first.

But for a handheld, that’s freaking amazing. Freaking. Amazing. But who the hell cares when there aren’t any games to play on it, right? Am I right?

“The PSP library pales in comparison with the DS.”

That statement is more opinion than fact, yet I see that printed as fact more often than not. Thankfully it’s easy to prove otherwise.

Using Gamerankings.com (which averages a multitude of respected and large gaming sites review scores), 22 PSP games scored in the top 80%. 21 DS games scored in the top 80%, and I’m being generous since Nintendogs is listed three times. (Three DS games made the top 90% however, whereas no PSP game has just yet.)

Opinions may vary, but there’s the cold hard evidence right there: journalists agree (whether they realize it or not) that both systems have a great selection of games.

“UMDs are dead.”

Yeah, UMD’s are dead. People are quick to blame the movie studios for putting UMDs at DVD prices with no extras...but I’ll go one step further and blame Sony. They priced their first UMDs at $20, with no extras, and kept that price and structure for every single one of their movies. They ruined the UMD movie format, and because of that the PSP got a bad rap for being another failed Sony product (even though it’s only the UMD movies that aren’t selling, and nothing else). This will pass eventually, as long as Blu-Ray keeps the promise of being the next-gen DVD format everyone hopes that it will.

When will this sexy beast come to the states anyways?

Right now it’s easy to see why the PSP is getting so much flak. Sony is going into the PS3 with a huge attitude of being number one. Well, they are number one. Will the PS3 keep them there? No one knows. But hey, the PSP isn’t number one...so let’s report on that and show how Sony’s arrogance (“taking handheld gaming out of the ghetto”) got them in second place!

It is easy to see how journalists aren’t touching their PSPs. After a five day working schedule of doing nothing but playing games, reviewing games, playing more games, working under deadlines, etc...would you really want to come to your PSP over the weekend and play some X-Men Legends? The PSP delivers the console experience for many, something that journalists don’t even consider wanting. Does everyone remember how unexcited IGN was about the PSP before it was released?

Now look at the DS. It’s mostly incapable of delivering a console experience. That’s not the purpose of the handheld. The purpose is to deliver exclusive games that you can’t play anywhere else, and it’s easy to see why game reviewers love it. I can’t see myself playing Tomb Raider Legend on my PSP when I’ve played it several times on my 360, wrote a review on it, and then get home only to play it on the PSP for fun, can you?

Obviously this journalistic mentality will go away once the console wars are in full swing. But to declare the PSP dead, when sales, developers and sometimes even the website’s own review scores declare otherwise...well, it’s ****ing ridiculous.

Long live the PSP.

Why is it always one and not the other? I have both the DS and PSP and I love them both. If I were to pick one over the other it would have to be the PSP. It is an amazing system. Long live PSP!

There are definitly "Killer Apps" for PS/PS2/PSP

PS:

PS2:
Rofl! What about some of these titles :

Final Fantasy X,
Onimusha,
Tenchu,
Hihi, and Resident Evil ^^
Dont forget Eyetoy which also got its fans.

PSP:
Final Fantasy Crisissomething,
The PS1 Emulator
And maybe some WIFI Power like... ... ... ... you know, online Games ^^.

Well wasting yer time raising this pointless topic seems a little rediculous as well.

What does PSP's death/ dying mean?

It means Sony stops supporting their own console.

There has been a few facts raised that may have brought some to support the idea that Sony was thinking about stopping selling PSP UMD Movies.

Ummm yeah... And that's all, reaally.

Sure their are a few more 'facts' that support other ideas of destruction as well. Such as most PSP being fully cracked and enabled for pirating of UMD.

If PSP goes down expect it to take at least a year or two before it happens. Look we are about to have some damn cool games as well so chill.

It's obvious that PSP has life left in it yet.
Hope writing that rant didn't take up too much of yer life hehe. (now that was a long one)

if i were to choose ds or psp i would choose ds.

a lot of really good games and touch screen controls for some of them so no jerky movement because you control it so if it seems messed up its you not the game. and lots of great series games (mario metroid advance wars wario ware final fantasy(soon) and a ton more) and its soon coming opera browser and its online play with 6 games so far.

I read it all.
PSP > DS.
PSP all the way!
Btw, the ONLY good ds game in my opinion is Metroid Prime: Hunters, if the PSP would get a metroid game, that'd be AWESOME!

excellent read and You didn't even have to mention the total wow factor that the psp puts out, like the amazing screen...... it is one of the only devices that is jaw droppingly beautiful even when turned off. and for a killer app???? firmware 1.5 is a pretty good one ;)

LOL this article/post cracks me up.

The only thing in my house collecting dust is also my damn Xbox 360 ... I still prefer my modded xbox over my 360 anyday (untill someone cracks the 360 without using media center)

PSP over DS all the way!!! I don't really care for Mario anyway, I mean seriously "MARIO IS GAY", c'mon you all know it's true, after saving the princess that many times he shoulda produced a Mario Jr. by now.

The guy doesn't even ONCE mention homebrew, does he? WTF.

The point is comparing the consoles commercially. To mention homebrew is to compare psp to dreamcast. Homebrew implies psp is commercially dead, which is bull hockey.

Now if everyone jumped off a toadstool would you? makes sure to take your ds with you.

I think DS is cool for children, but the psp is for more mature users(clearly)based on it's design and price. DS users tend to live in a childish world. Forget what some pissed of DS fanboy says about psp it's clearly a compliment to psp's greatness.

I love my psp thats why i gave my DS (NSMB, RE DS, Mario Kart included) to my brother.

I liked ds until i got psp. then ds was collecting dust because psp is what ds should have been. And ds is slightly more than a gba with touch screen.

I think nintendo needs to think about us older gamers instead of catering to children and those with with no appreciation for technology. Those of us who grew up on nintendo, find ourselves grown out of nintendo, and thats a shame.
I suggest a psp to anyone who seems mature enough to handle it's power. I suggest DS to children and girls. It's that simple.

AGREED !!!!!!!LONG LIVE PSP!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. ds had to put out a new version to correct it's shortcomings. There is no psp lite. and it's because sony got it right the first time.

OMG THATS SO FUNNY....now for the modders rant ;)...lol read this whole thing guys ;) word up ;)

F*ck yeah let the truth be told WE THE HACKERS keep the psp alive alone..no less the AMAZING library i have 40 umd's myself and im getting tekken soon ;) .i mean first
theres the REBELION FACTOR :) some love there psp just for homebrew and hacking ...and why not with apps like devhook letting you emulate 2.7 on your psp 1.5......IRshell allowing you to listen to any music you want while playing any homebrew game and even some commercial games like nfs rivals! can you blame them???
DEAD???!!!! LMAO.....anyone who says IVE GOT A PSP ITS JUST COLLECTING DUST THIS IS DUE TO ONE OF 2 THINGS:
your a lying DS owning JEALOUS A-hole because i really have both a nds and psp 4 REAL and my nds is only good for two games so far!!! that arent childish and stupid!!! nsmb and 007 rouge ageny so my NDS TRUELEY DOES COLLECT DUST
or
your not smart enogh to know all that is out there FREE for you to enjoy HOMEBREW!! i mean people here know but not everyone does ...they should but dont.....and if you do know...then you enjoy new releases by authers that ACTUALLY CARE WHAT YOU THINK everyday......so again ....SONY IS TO BLAME for there greedy corprate attitudes BLAME SONY FOR:
movie UMD sales...too expensive ...
ISO LOADERS.......because they wont allow homebrew so theres no respect between homebrewers and sony!!!

think of it like this....IN LIFE WE HAVE TERRORISM BECAUSE: a gov allows even 1 rouge militia to take over ANY SMALL REGION then spread its beleaves to others ...whos wrong that is the question that remains....the answer is based souley on opinion NOT facts.....sadly this can only result in continued disrespect untill a THIRD PARTY WITHOUT BIAS interveens most of the time.....

likewise is the sony vs homebrew

sony want to be a dictator to the technology it has developed...and its not that they dont want you to ENJOY your psp....but they want you to enjoy it while being dictated and bleeding your $$$$ dry at the same time.....so as the creator they think

"

we made the technology so...."

as a gamer we think

" yeah and we payed for the technology now i own it why cant i make the best of it???? does sony hate us??"

well think about this..

china may have made PASTA.....but italians mastered the use of PASTA ;)

"sony made the psp....its users ( the gamers mastered the USE of the psp " ;) hehehehe HOMEBREW all the WAY!!!!!!!!

...yeah, I'm pretty sure those articles are just plain ridiculous. PSP is hands down better than any other hand-held system out there.

However, some do have a point about the absence of great games... there's not too much denying that. But there's still plenty of games to be released. However, if you want to talk about a week game library, let's talk about the Game Boy Advance... and from what I see, the DS isn't that much better (exceptions being that new mario game and mario 64)...

so wtf? why bash the psp I think it's one of the greatest things I've ever bought especially considering the fact that its much more thna just a game system... Sony just needs to be willing to allow more features that's all.

The Playstations have had killer apps like:

the twisted metal's
the ratchet & clank's
the sly cooper's
the grand theft auto's for a while
the resident evil's for a while
the good crash bandicoot's (Naughty Dog ones)
the first medal of honor's (playstation one)
some of the silent hill's (2 and 4 are on xbox)
the spyro's ((the Insomniac ones)(playstation one))
the metal gear solid's (until it went multiplatform)

even though some of the aren't good anymore and some of them have gone multiplatform they were some of the best games for the playstation's. plaus psp has a good handheld grand theft auto.

The day i will be able to:

1. Watch a movie in a DS whitout being at 3" of the screen to see the subtitles and with decent FPS

2. Play SNES, GENESIS, NEOGEO, NES (and even N64).. games at decent speed on the DS

3. Have Apps like IRSHELL, A Quake Port or PSPRevolution in the DS

That day i will start to think that the DS is a least as good as the PSP.

Omg! Great article! Just perfect lol!

I find amusing the "no good titles for the PSP" line that i'm used to hear, because i still have to buy games like Locoroco, Tokobot, Daxter, Valkyrie Profile, Tales of Eternia, Syphon Filter, Mercury, Mg!A2, etc, but i don't have money for them.

And many more are coming!

I'm just happy happy happy with my PSP.

its always good to hear praises on the psp... God knows i love the damn thing. but it sucks that in this forum, there are no DS users to support the other side, so it ends up being a witch hunt to anybody who uses a DS. im going to say it outright that, yes, i have a DS. and guess what? i I LIKE IT TOO! just because there are certain aspects that are apparent on one system and not the other does not mean that one system is better than the other.

And for all of those other people out there that dont want to admit that they have a DS and perhaps like it, just look at it this way; by your own logic, youre a dumbass when it comes to shopping and shouldnt be discussing which product is better anyways.

consider it a yin/yang situation

I own both a PSP and a DS Lite and I would have to say without homebrew/hacking the PSP wouldn't be anywhere near how good it is. The DS has some really fun and innovative games. The PSP has a couple games that are almost 100% like the PS2 counterpart and more functionality.

Here's what makes the PSP bad:
loading on UMD (I ditched UMDs a while ago)
expensive
worthless firmware updates
low battery life

Here's what makes the DS bad:
cartridges hold not a lot of information
needs Supercard or M3 to run roms/homebrew
graphics are nowhere near as good as PSP

Both handhelds are very different and can't substitute the other one. Without homebrew/hacking I think both my DS and PSP would be collecting dust.

Final judgement: best for homebrew/hacking PSP
best for commercial games DS

you guys often bring the "homebrewery" into this discussion far too often. The success of a system has very little to do with how many consoles are sold, but rather how much software is sold... everyone should know that by now.

Ive changed my opinion on the psp's "death" status from being dead... now it will just be known as "a console that currently BLOWS." Fortunatly we have the dev scene to keep our psp's from gathering dust... sadly thats about all.

It's sad to know that the next crash is a DS title.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble.

Bandicoot titles lost their steam towards the end anyway. For me Wipeout Pure is the PSP killer app, it was what made me buy a PSP (oh and homebrew too!), but as mentioned in the article it's not to everyones tastes.

NOT TO WORRY!!!

I am working on a functional DS mod for the PSP! Bwahahahahaaha

It will involve Duct Tape (or 3m mounting adhesive depending on price) and THAT'S ALL U NEED!!! When Crash comes out you can play it "on" the back of your PSP.

I will post pictures once I have done this mod ... need to borrow someone's ds tho, anyone willing to mail me one for this mod? -_^

I disagree. You are wayyy too much of a PSP fanboy for me to listen to what you wrote. Get less biased when you write an opinionated article. And BTW, "my PSP is gathering dust" is a figure of speech, jackass. Just means that people don't use it as much/at all. And yes, the games do suck..*crosses fingers for loco*

I find it funny that some people call other people fan boys then go on to say why their system is the greatest. Wouldn't a fan boy be someone who only owns one system and is always talking about how great their one system is?

I realize that owning both systems is hard as it is expensive, but why comment on this if you only own one system?

I own both a PSP and a DS. The fact of the matter is that I like both. When I bought my DS Lite, my friends were like, see you broke down cause you know the PSP sucks.

Not true, I bought it so I could play other great games that I currently don't get on my PSP. Some of those games like castlevania, mario 64 and new mario, metroid, Megaman ZX and so forth. However, on the other hand, I have been playing games for the last 2 years on the PSP. Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Burnout, Prince of Persia, Namco Meseum, Hot Shots Golf, and the list goes on.

I know many people will say these are only ports of PS2 titles, but my response is who cares? I don't. I have a family and don't have the time to play my PS2 at all anymore. So, I am happy that I can play some of the ports out there that I missed the first time around. And to be fair, a lot of the games that I want to play on the NDS Lite are ports of N64 games.

In my opinion, after owning both is that the PSP is better. The games to me are equal. However, I like the screen and the graphics better on the PSP. On a solely non homebrew basis they are pretty close, and that is the topper for me.

Once you introduce homebrew into the mix, the NDS Lite really falls behind. However, do I hold that against the NDS? No, because I couldn't play any of the above mentioned games.

The only thing I hold over Nintendo is that they conciously released a product that is not as good as the technology allowed it to be. The PSP showed that PS2 type games can be playable now. Nintendo should have released a handheld system that was comprable to the Gamecube instead of the N64.

Don't know if your post was torwards me, but I imagine it was with the fanboy comment.

I own the 3 major current gen consoles, played the hell out of XB360, and own both a PSP and a DS. I am a "hardcore" gamer, and not one system holds my attraction more then another.

Me calling someone a fanboy about a PSP, when they are stating many things that point to what I said, then why not say it.

Alucard
July 22nd, 2006, 01:35
Post wasn't directed at you. It was more of an observation. My point was most of the time, the people arguing only have one system, and talk out of their ass. This goes for PSP only and DS only owners.

By the way, just curious, you said that the PSP games suck. Have you tried any of the below:

- Megaman
- Megaman X
- Hot Shots Golf
- Wipeout
- Ridge Racer
- Burnout
- Prince of Persia
- GTA
- Gradius Collection
- Lumines
- Namco Museum
- Splinter Cell
- SSX
- Syphon Filter
- Virtua Tennis
- Daxter

All those I found pretty enjoyable. I beat 8 of them actually, others still haven't had time to fully get stuck on. Burnout has been occuping me lately. So I wouldn't say that the games suck on the PSP. I have a list here of 17 games that are pretty good. I think people can add to them. 1 really enjoyable game every 2 months is enough for me on the PSP. Especially with all of its homebrew capability.

I think the DS has about the same ratio of 1 enjoyable game for every 2 months of release. Once the Opera browser becomes available, I think the DS will top the PSP in terms of browser. The PSP one is horrible. Only good thing is that it is free.

By the way, just curious, you said that the PSP games suck. Have you tried any of the below:

- Megaman
- Megaman X
- Hot Shots Golf
- Wipeout
- Ridge Racer
- Burnout
- Prince of Persia
- GTA
- Gradius Collection
- Lumines
- Namco Museum
- Splinter Cell
- SSX
- Syphon Filter
- Virtua Tennis
- Daxter

All those I found pretty enjoyable.

I agree that list is great (minus any of the games that have to do with sports ... sweaty men in tights playing with balls or hitting balls, just does not appeal to me).

But one game I really think many people overlook and currently is my fav PSP game of all time is ... (drum role)

TALES OF ETERNIA!!!

OMG this game is OFF THE HOOK!!! Imagine Street Fighter meets Final Fantasy. Seriously EVERYONE who likes RPG's should get this game.

Hey George lets talk about Social Security reform, I am seriously scared of what will happen in the future. No way can social security survive the way it is set up now. Every paycheck I am taxed social security supporting all these old folks for what reason? So I can be screwed out of the same free money later on?

On the same note of taxes, didn't ur father lie on national TV about new taxes? So your the son of a known lier, someone who cannot even eat broccoli without offending another culture by throwing it up?

Seriously don't ever let me in the same room with you ... I love that your into war and all, but I hate then you have more money then me and do not even own a PSP. (And even if you did I bet you don't even have hombrew on it ... you prolly upgraded because sony paid you to).
