Bitblt over at SCDev.org (http://scdev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4881) recently had the idea of starting a poll on what open-source games we would like to see ported to the Nintendo DS. I thought this was a great idea that deserved to be spread through the community (as it can give coders new ideas and insight on what the players want, and the players great new games to play :D).

So, what do you guys think would be the next best open-source port for the DS? Post your ideas and links here!

Remember, the touch screen can add some neat features to some games!

Here's a list of what was been suggested so far (thanks to everyone at SCDev that already contributed to the list!):

I'm pretty sure abuse uses the mouse for aiming. You could touch the screen in the direction you want to shoot and use L/R to fire.

Are you sure Cannon Fodder is open source? I couldn't find any info on the source code.

If you want to vote for something not on the list, post a link to where you can get the source and I'll add it.

Also, please try to make it obvious what you're voting for. I have to keep track of results myself :(

Moon Cresta! a.k.a Eagle

That's an arcade game isn't it? You'll have to wait for a port of MAME for that. :p

No Half-Life? :(

Half-Life isn't on the list becase I didn't think it'd be possible. Everything is 3D in Half-life. Games like Doom and Hexen have 2D sprites, which use less memory. Alot of people would vote for Half-Life too, taking votes away from other games in favor of something that might not be possible.

I could be wrong though. Anyone care to shed some light on the issue?

This thread originated in the SCDev forum, so I'll summarize what I posted there.

The D2X-XL project has everything needed to put together a working port of Descent 2 - which also runs Descent 1 content.

Descent 1/2 is the perfect game for the DS.

Meh, you forced me into it. I'll just explain some of my ideas. Same as I posted on SCDev:

Descent 1 and 2 natively support co-op missions, as well as co-op campaign mode :)

The D2X-XL project adds a tracker system to the multiplayer aspect which could be used to set up a Nintendo Wifi-ish system, or at least its current functionality which is more than adequate.

Everything's already in place. Fully open code, written to a fully open standard, with system requirements within range of the DS's capabilities.

Here's the control scheme I was thinking of. Since Descent uses a much, much more complex movement system than games like Hunters, the main problem will be figuring out how to map all the necessary controls in a logical way.

The main problem is sliding, aka strafing.

I was thinking something like this:

d-pad - aiming

L - hold down to switch D-Pad into strafe mode (similar to holding down alt in the original)

X - forward

B - back

Y - fire secondary

A - drop bomb

R - fire primary

Start - game menu (exit, main menu, etc)

Select - automap

Try these out on your own DS, you'll see it works out very well.

On the touchscreen would be your HUD (shield/energy guage, bomb count and type, primary/secondary weapons, cloak/stealth status, anything I'm forgetting). Similar to mario 64, there would also be two sets of arrows, which could easily be controlled by thumbs even while in combat, so they'd have to have a pretty big touching region. Touching one arrow would cycle through either primary or secondary one way, touching the other arrow would cycle through either primary or secondary the other way.

Why not use touchscreen for aiming? The answer is simple, and it is that it would deny you access to too many buttons, which means too many essential functions. Hunters works reasonably well here since there's just shoot, aim, and move necessary. Descent 2 is massively more complex. There's move, strafe, fire three different categories of weapons *simultaneously*, a map, a completely different style of movement... etc.

Finally, unlike Hunters, this was only a second-generation FPS. Hitboxes were not very complex and this wasn't a bad thing. Precision weapon firing wasn't a big issue, you just had to hit the general area, similar to Doom. Again, this is NOT a bad thing. The whole game was designed with this in mind. And, the speed at which you could turn in Descent is much like in the Gamecube "Prime" series - you could turn slowly or quickly, but it was limited to a certain speed. Most of the time you wanted to turn at the maximum speed, and when you didn't, you usually strafed instead.

This could really work. We just need a developer. Look how quickly Picodrive has come along! It's because its developer was very dedicated and the code he started on, like D2 code, was fully open. I would love to take on this project myself, but I have no experience with this sort of work.

Here's a reasonably average-detail ingame screenshot:

http://www.msu.edu/~bonddenn/screenshots/descent2.jpg

The level of detail is ideal.

Half-life ain't happening. It's too complex, too detailed, and sure as hell isn't open-source.

To qualify for this list, a game must be:
open source
open source
and
open source

See, it fails all three criteria.

When he said it was possible, maybe he meant that it was within the realm of reason that it might run not too bad on the DS. However it is not open source. Counterstrike, even if open-source, relies on non-open-source HL1 stuff. Period. That's all there is to it. You cannot just get source code from out of nowhere, and source code is required before you can even begin to think about porting something.

Descent. Most def.

My absurd homebrew suggestion that has nothing to do with converting open source: I've been fantasizing about a DS Mario Sunshine lately. The way I see it there are two options. One would be to model it after NSMB (which would involve a rediculous amount of level redesign) and the other is to model it after Mario64 DS (again, would be very dificult, but you wouldn't have to think as much about level redesign as it would be in 3D). If I ever get up the energy to learn how to make a DS game I'll try. I'll probably end up pestering Nintendo about it, too.

I vote for Abuse

it would probably be the simpilest to port and make the best use of the controls.

aiming and weapon selection via the touch screen (TAP to select weapons DRAG to aim otherwise you might accidently be changing weapons all the time)
movement via the pad and L to jump should work perfectly.

plus the levels and graphics in one version are open source also are the descent levels and graphics and models open source also or just the engine?

My idea is the original Sims, I know its a huge PC game but by that I mean the sims where you "play god", create a house and make the family do what you want, this game can become tiresome on the PC when its your only focus, but is perfect for a handheld whilst your lounging around, IMO it would be a big hit in this community, even if it werent directly a sims port, we need a game like that.

Aswell as that I'll just list random games i'd like in no real order:

Sims 1
Banjo Kazooie
Prince of Persia
Grand Theft Auto (I'd love a 3d styled)
Star Wars Battlefront!!!!! =-O, great game, for ps2 atleast
Tekken
City Of Hereos/City Of Villians

Alot are probably impossible ideas, but I have no idea how you guys do these ports so its worth a shot suggesting them.

Thanks for asking our opinions :)

Just to remind everyone, this is a list of open source games. Feel free to post games that you think are open source (I'll do my best to find out), but games like Banjo Kazooie aren't even for the PC... Which means no source code, ever.

If you want to make a serious post *please* check to see if the game you want to see is open-source. And for goodness sake, don't suggest things like 2006-released PC games such as Wolfenstein Enemy Territory or WoW, that's just absurd. 50 DSs, all overclocked and sharing the processing load, could not manage 1 frame per second on either of those games.

No commercial game from any later than 1996-1998 is likely to be capable of running on DS hardware, and furthermore would not have had their source code released (mostly - if a company went bankrupt sometimes they give away some stuff, like what happened with Descent and Freespace). That includes anything based on the Quake 3, Unreal, or Source engines. Like I said earlier, that most certainly precludes any version of Counterstrike, so forget it and move on.

While I deeply believe DS is really fitted to fast paced action FPS (Quake and Descent ports are here to prove it), I think it also has great potential for more adventure/puzzle/stealth-based fps like Thief, System Shock, Ultima Underworld or Penumbra.

I vote for any port or "from scratch" homebrew of this kind !

What the community need is a solid FPS game engine with PC mapping tool. I hope cQuake will continue to evolve, then we could work at maps/mods with tools like GTKradiant or such... But maybe I'm dreaming.

Marathon/aleph one
Beats of Rage (or even just the engine so long as you can play the different packs that're built)
Battle for Wesnoth (even though I'm not a huge RTS fan...that game is just brillient)

Edit: People. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD/WHATEVER YOU WORSHIP PLEASE STOP WITH THE JOKE/UNREASONABLE PORT REQUESTS! Seriously, its hard to find the actual meat for all the 'crysis/warcraft yammering thus making actual requests harder to find).

I want Mega man Legends.... What? It was a PC game, get all the source from the game and make it happen. I'd like that. I love that game! It wasn't exactly cutting edge when it came out, so it could be possible I think. You could even create extra weapons if thats possible.

Reiterating a point made on the pandora forums about the same topic of what should be ported.

No Scourcecode=can't port it.
