With lawsuits like Apple's becoming increasingly common, are patents hurting technology more than they're helping it?
Von Hippel, who teaches technological innovation at the school, said:
It's a bad scene right now. The social value of patents was supposed to be to encourage innovation - that's what society gets out of it...The net effect is that they decrease innovation, and in the end, the public loses out.
Though the Professor explains that "only 5 percent of these types of cases actually go through the judicial system," the legal battle that Apple and HTC have ahead will undoubtedly take away time and resources from what these companies do best: innovation.
