Siliconera found a patent application from Nintendo that is one of either two things - a new cartridge for existing DS configurations, or a new cartridge for a new DS. Or it could be both, come to think of it.

Looks like there is a switch on the side of the cartridge...

Or maybe it is an infrared sensor?

Such a big cartridge was already used in a DS game, have a look at "Hoshizora Navi", a planetarium game... having a built in digital compass.

Or it could be the button to release (what could be) the locking lever below it (notice that the lever is angled on one side to slip in but not on the other side)...who knows...time will tell if the big N even uses the design.
