Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 has entered straight in at number one in the UK all formats chart, becoming the fastest-selling title of the year so far.

Despite a more mixed critical reception than normal for a mainline entry in the series the game broke the record for the fastest selling title of 2010, which was set only last week by EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Unusually for a multiformat title it was the PlayStation 3 version that sold the most, with 54 per cent of sales, reflecting the series' long association with Sony consoles dating back to Final Fantasy VII.

The rest of the chart saw little other movement of note, with Bad Company 2 dropping only one space to number two as sales fell by 38 per cent. Ubisoft's Just Dance on Wii saw sales drop by only 9 per cent at number three, while PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain was a non-mover at number four with an 8 per cent decline.

Wii Fit Plus rose one place to number five with sales up 11 per cent on the previous week, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 just behind it with an increase in sales of 2 per cent.

This week also saw Modern Warfare 2 become the second highest selling title ever in the UK, taking over from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and now behind only Brain Training on the Nintendo DS.

Other new releases outside the top 10 include Namco Bandai's multiformat cartoon tie-in Ben 10: Alien Force - Vilgax Attacks at number 13 and THQ's PC exclusive real-time strategy standalone expansion Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising at number 14.

Sega's PS3 exclusive Yakuza 3 debuted at number 24, Disney film tie-in Alice in Wonderland at number 34 and retro compilation Sonic Classic Collection on DS at number 35.

The full top ten follows:

01 Final Fantasy XIII
02 Battlefield: Bad Company 2
03 Just Dance
04 Heavy Rain
05 Wii Fit Plus
06 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
07 Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
08 Aliens vs Predator
09 Wii Sports Resort
10 New Super Mario Bros. Wii

SONY have had all the main Final Fantasy titles since VII, so it's only right that the PS3 has the better selling version.

I researched both versions a few weeks ago, which one site stated that for the Xbox360 to achieve the uncompressed look and feel of the PS3 version, it has to be on three discs which makes it somewhere near 25gb. I'm sure after the release, there have been more comparisons of the two. I will be owning the PS3 version, though not yet.
