Apple has revealed the iPhone 4 at its Worldwide Developer Conference in San Franscico, with the new handheld featuring a built-in three-axis gyro and a significantly increased pixel resolution.

The iPhone 4 has six-axis motion sensing with pitch and roll "making it perfect for gaming," according to Apple, which can be accessed using the new CoreMotion API. The display has been upped to four times the iPhone 3GS to 960 x 640, with the 326 pixels per inch increasing the resolution of text, images and video.

It features a five megapixel camera with LED flash and a front mounted camera, HD video recording and the FaceTime app used for video calls over WiFi.

The iPhone 4 comes with iOS 4, the new name for the iPhone operating system, which Apple claims will boast over 100 new features including multitasking and Apple's new iAd mobile advertising platform.

The handset will be available in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan on June 24, with a North American price of $199 on a two year contract for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model.

"iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone," said Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple. "FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page. We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades."

The company also announced a new iPhone 3GS 8GB model to retail at $99.
