Video games retailers have said that Microsoft's Kinect needs to be priced below £100 if it is to appeal to the mainstream.

At the moment retailers have been forced to take pre-orders for the Xbox 360 motion control device at prices of over £100.

But many say that's too high a price if Kinect is going to reach a wide audience.

"Sub-£100 and Kinect will benefit immensely," Morrison's games buyer Nick Sultanti told Develop.

"People are going to compare price points between Move and Kinect and it would be fairly detrimental if there is a major price discrepancy in favour of Move."

ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta added: "Predictions of Kinect price being over £79.99 will do little to engender early adopters and thus affect unit sales in the short to medium term."

Reports suggest that each Kinect unit costs Microsoft $150 (just over £100).

The official Microsoft online shop listed Kinect at $149 on Tuesday although that price was called a 'place holder' by the company yesterday.
