Apple has sold 1.7 million units of iPhone 4 since it was launched on June 24th, with the company claiming the launch to be the most successful in its history.
Last week Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner predicted Apple could have sold 1.5 million units on launch day.
The official figure comes as no surprise - the iPhone 4 pre-order process was hampered by websites falling over and other bugs in the system. In the US and UK, the initial stocks available for pre-order were sold out.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. Even so, we apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”
The latest incarnation of the iPhone comes with iOS 4, offering multitasking, folders, enhanced mail, deeper enterprise support and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform.

It's not been a smooth launch by any means, however, with many customers complaining about poor signal reception when the device is held in a certain way.
