The classic game Doom has appeared on the Nintendo DS, heres all the release news:

The coders behind the release are TheChuckster and WinterMute (http://dsdoom.devkitpro.org/)

DSDoom is a port of Doom to the Nintendo DS based off the Prboom source tree because of its purity and portability.

Features
DSDoom loads any Prboom-compatible IWAD file.
Single-player is playable at very smooth framerates.
Multiplayer network play is possible using DS wifi and prboom_server.exe.
Configuration file.
Sound effects work with stereo panning.
Future Plans

Possibly a better net code or music support (would be very difficult though because of the MIDI files DOOM uses).
Touch screen control.

Heres a
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SgItL4LV44

Controls are simple.
Use the directional pad for movement
Hold the X button to sprint
The Y button toggles through your weapon inventory.

The A button fires.

The B button is the "use" key for opening doors, etc.
The R and L buttons allow you to strafe.
The Start button brings up the main menu.
The Select button chooses options in the menus.
Wifi connection
To play online using wifi, you're going to want to have a PC with port 5030 opened/forwarded. Run prboom_server.exe with the number of players specified using the -N command line parameter. There are other parameters for such things as maps and coop; check out the prboom_server documentation. The server waits until the given number of players connect and then the game begins.

Now that you have the server running, you will want to set up the DSes. Make sure that WFC data is set in firmware on the DSes. Next, edit the prboom.cfg file on the card and change the server "name:port" line under misc. You are ready to start. Launch dsdoom.nds and choose the network game option in the initial menu.

I tried to play this, but it corrupted the memory stick!!!! The weird thing is before I tried to repair it using "chkdsk". All that Windows could see is a zero byte file name "QU" or something to that effect. But in my m3 adapter, it saw it perfectly....

This really sucks for me. :(

Damn!!!!!!!!!!

I saved perfectly on my supercard micro-sd. You must patch it with the moonshell patcher for the micro-sd supercard for it to work correctly.

He said music support might not even happen because their in midi format. Can't he just convert them to mp3 or wav or something? I dont care if its 100mb more doom without the doom music just isn't doom.

They might be able to convert them to a .gsm format then play them that way...the GBA was capable of playing GSM files, so why couldnt the DS, but then i think it would still be needed to be converted to .mp3 first then .gsm. It would be low-quality but the music would still be there....anyway that might not work either so im going to stop rambling on about it

I've tested the following registered full version WAD files and if you rename one of them to DOOM.WAD it will work:

TNT.WAD
DOOM2.WAD
ULTIMATEDOOM.WAD
PLUTONIUM.WAD

Nope, feel free to try.
The way they use PRboom though, it will probably run ANY PRboom-compatible WAD though.
Knock yourself out and report back.

I was playing this at work today lol pretty kick ass. For some reason it looks better to me on the ds I dunno why.

iball
August 9th, 2006, 22:41
WHile this is cool, it's nothing compared to playing full-blown Heretic on the DS.
That one has full sound and music.
Ok, I tried a couple of PRboom-compatible WADs and NONE of them worked (Scythe, 2001: A Doom Odessey, FFdoom2).
But I do know that the coders are thinking about slapping in a WAD-select menu:

I suppose I could have a menu like in StellaDS for choosing the IWAD and possibly the PWAD to load. Keep checking SVN for updates.

Yea verily unto thee my bretheren (well, the non-plural version of bretheren-- but bretheren sounds better). I'm surprised that it runs on the gbamp at all, considering the full version uses an 11mb WAD. Then again it probably just pages in and out of RAM, 'cause DOOM had to run on a 386. :D Though sometimes there is some lag. (paging?) It would be nice of the DS's 3D could be used as a fast 2D accelerator-ey-type-thing. That would probably kill the lag, but thats assuming that they are already using the 2D hardware. (Are they?)

edit: A pop-up touch-screen keyboard would be nice for saving your game.

I'm currently using an M3 SD...
I tried installing DSDoom, using the vague instructions it provided, extracting all the files to the root directory, with a doom.wad file. I tried running it... I get a black screen on top and a white one on the bottom. I restarted my M3, then the only folders I was able to see was BACKING, prboom-2.4.4-win32, WADS, and the dsdoom.nds file... thats it! I then put my card in the SD reader and checked the space remaining... it gave me about 24MBs. Then I checked the volume for errors [and set to fix any]... took about 15 seconds and it didn't report any errors. I put it back and nothing changed. I decided to try dsdoom one more time.... same thing happened... only this time when I restarted my M3 my custom skin was gone, and the only thing it shows in the folders was FOUND.000!! I put it back in the SD reader and checked the space again, which was the same, and checked the volume for errors, and once again it reported nothing... but it took about 15 minutes. I checked it again and same damn thing.

Can ANYBODY help me?!? Even if I could recover just half of it I'll be happy! Any tools or software anybody knows that could help me on this?? I really want to recover my saves... I put hundreds and hundreds of hours to the games I've played on this... I don't want them to be in vain.
PLEASE, somebody HELP ME!!

probably something wrong with your sd card, when i was betatesting the code during development on my m3:sd and I couldn't get it to work on some noname 512mb card i had, but works fine on a namebrand 1gb card , I think I did see something about formatting the card as FAT32 vs FAT or the other way, seems to resolves some issues with the fatlib.

Not trying to be a jack ass but that´s why you should backup your savegames, it seems that in some SD cards, DSDooM has a way of screwing with the data, i guess you will have to format your card.

I have an A-Data 150x 1gb SD, which is pretty much perfect on the M3 compatibility list. I formatted my card... this is the first time in my homebrew history [NDS, PSP, GP32] that I had to do something like this, or dealt with savestates being erased. Guess I'll have to make sure I back my stuff up for now on.
After I formatted my card, I tried it again, and it still didn't work [FAT32]. I'm thinking some SD/miniSD cards just aren't compatible with it for some strange reason...

There should definitely be a disclaimer about this since I'm obviously not the only one having this problem.

You're formatting it as FAT32.
Format it as plain-old FAT (FAT16) and try again.

I can't help you with this but downloading stuff on to any device like this can often have problems, you should reguly back everything up on your PC, its the same with other devices, do it as often as possible, ya know, as soon as you make some huge foot forward on a game and want to download something new, back up whats already on there.

I a nut shell, whenever your SD card is plugged into your PC to download something, make sure you back up everything first, its already plugged in, whats the prob?

Just a little tip ;)

There is a disclaimer, "08.07.06 - Site created. A lot of functionality has been implemented in the SVN repository over the past week or so and DSDoom is basically ready to be released for beta testing."

You should always have backups when testing beta software. Not that I haven't been burned by the same issue :)

luckly I ran chkdsk /f on my sd card and the files restored in a something named like file0xx.chk but they were my save files I just had to rename them to the correct name.

Single player works perfect on my DS. I'm trying to setup a server but it's not working.. When connecting to the default IP adress in the PRBOOM.cfg file, it works and then just recieves packets continuously for eternity (I know it shouldnt work with that IP adress). When I put my IP adress in the CFG file I get a guru meditation error after it says connecting via WFC data. I've forwarded port 5030 and I have the server running.

Can't wait to get some fellow homebrewers together and give multiplayer a try. I think the touch pad could use a little work though, aka have the zero point on the emulated joystick be where you first put down the stylus and not the center of the screen. Aka you put the stylus down anywhere on the screen and you don't turn, but when you move the stylus left you start turning left, as opposed to just putting the stylus on the left side of the touch screen to move left. I doubt i'd use the stylus anyways, but just a thought.

Where'd you exactly put all the files?
What version of DSDOOM?
And did you rename a commercial version or shareware version WAD to doom.wad and place it with the other files?

Nice work i have a supercard and it work very good, i can play with doom.wad, doom2.wad,ultimate doom.wad, blood.wad, Goldeneye.wad, plutonia.wad and tnt.wad.

I have one .nds for each .wad, just edit with an hexadecimal editor and change the second doom.wad by name of other, just one rule : the filename must have four letter like doom.wad ^^

Reppa could you explain this a bit more?, i've never used any editors or even used Doom downloads before, but i'd love to have multiple versions on DS so i dont have to keep swapping what wad i have on my SD

Simple. Open up the DSDOOM.NDS in any hex editor and find the DOOM.WAD string as shown in the attached photo. Edit that to something like ULTI.WAD and rename the WAD file itself to ULTI.WAD and then "SAVE AS" the newly-edited DSDOOM.NDS file to something else like ULTI_DOOM.NDS and copy over to flashcart and run.
Make sure the renamed WAD files are in the root of the flashcard. Then when you want to run any other WAD, just select the file you hex-edited to auto-run that particular WAD.
I do wish they would hurry up with a WAD selector though...604k for each .NDS file is kind of a waste.
Don't ask me what hex editor I used, I'm on Mac OS X and used 0xED.

Cant get this to work on my SD Lite card, have put all the files in the root dir, and renamed the wad file, put still doesnt work, just get the message 'Survived graphics init'. Any suggestions?

I assume you mean Supercard Lite. Did you patch it with the moonshell patcher?

That's one solution. Personally, I just use DSOrganize to rename the WAD files to use whichever one I want. I have:

Doom_Demo.WAD
Doom2.WAD
Doom_MM.WAD
Doom_MM2.WAD
Doom_Icarus.WAD

With the latest build of DSOrganize, renaming these files is very quick and easy (though not quite as quick as having multiple hex-edited dsdoom.nds files I suppose).

Thanks a bunch for that help, its alot easier then I thought!, I downloaded a hex editor thats pretty good, i can access it through the properties bar and edit it in there, then save it :), when searching "doom.wad" the first one I come across has "doom.wad doom1.wad doom2.wad" and some other stuff, then afterwards I find the same "doom.wad" as in your screen, so I take it i just edit the last one and leave the first one, the first one was much earlier and not 78D98.

If I have to change both please lmk.

Thanks again for taking a screen and everything :), and thanks jess for the suggestion.

No i havent, where do i get the moonshell patcher, and how do i patch it?

It comes in a zip file with the latest firmware and rom patcher on the supercard site: http://www.supercard.cn

Just run the moonshell patcher program, browse to select your dsdoom.nds file, and click OK.

Geometris
September 12th, 2006, 03:16
I think the issue is the bad homebrew support on the m3 itself. The best/only thing we can do right now is to sign that petition in hopes of the company giving out better documentation to developers on how their card works.

this is ace.... I'm gonna put DSOrganise on my M3 CF card so I can change WAD's. (Found a few doom wads on some old floppies I've had for years)

One question, can you reconfigure the controls?
If so, is it in the game itself, or the config file?

I might mirror the controls similar to MPH....

L1 - Fire
< - Strafe Left
> - Strafe Right
U - Forward
D - Back

Left/Right Touch - Turn Left/Right
Up Touch - Active/Open door

Down Touch - not sure.... might leave unassigned so you don't use it by accident..... or maybe Run, that might work.

I'm not sure where I would to put the weapon buttons tho.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Because this only emulates Doom and not Doom II perhaps?

It doesn't emulate, it takes the grapchics, music, background, etc from the WAD archive then put it on screen, just like a code and a compiler.

For all those who are having black or white screens, make sure you extract all files in root of your memory card, otherwise it won't work.

Up to my question, is it normal to have all teleport, imp fire balls, spheres etc. all pixeled? For example all atmospheres are impossible to regodnize from each other, they are all just some pixel balls. It's quite annoying to have pixeled fire, when shooting to walls or imp shooting some pixel garbage on you. Help?

Custom IWADS that work with DSDOOM
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40083

If you've got the right files in a folder called DSDOOM with the correct wad(try the shareware WAD first. You may have to rename it Doom.wad). Other files needed PRBOOM.CFG,prboom.wad,TRANMAP.DAT(think this is created when you first run dsdoom)

Try putting all the files directly in the Root of your card, a M3 user once said this worked for him.
