Sony have launched a mini-website for their new product, the Sony "Mylo" (previously thought to be called the Sony Milo) which we posted (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=31550) yesterday. You can check out the site here (http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/assets/itpd/mylo/prod/index.html). On the site you will find a full feature list for the device, which I'm sure you'll agree, is similar to the PSP.

The SonyStyle website (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start;sid=TfhTkJqODLFSSt5W8yNZm9WAeFEy6hbSJfY=?Cat egoryName=pa_PersonalCommunicators&Dept=audio&LCID=LCTR_Showcase:ITPD:Mylo:Prod:Home:btnClick) also has posted the Mylo and it will be available in September of this year.

So.. it's a PSP without the games, but with a keyboard. Interesting.

why dont they just develop these applications for the psp then more people would buy them

Wow,that thing is going to get hacked to pieces!

Ok, although I kind of like this, I am officially pissed off. This gets 1GB of internal flash memory while the PSP was designed with ZERO internal memory storage.

This will have video playback at its native resolution (320x240) while the PSP is limited to 320x240 instead of its full 480x272 resolution. (Thank you PMP Mod)

Its hard NOT to judge the similarities with the PSP and feel cheated.

This better be EXTREMELY affordable ore else I don't see it becoming "the next best thing".

I like how it has a TON of internet commincation capabilities built in.

Owell, I guess this is geared to a different, less interest in gaming crowd.

Either Sony is bigger and bolder than I thought or they are trying to do too much at once.

Wow,that thing is going to get hacked to pieces!

That would be cool, this thing will support memory stick DUO cards which means a good amount of storage for a gadget smaller than the PSP.

A lot of people hoping to hack, mod, exploit, or create homebrew for these should get them when they are first released to have an earlier hardware version. I would not be surprised if Sony has "security updates" planned for this.

Anyone think Sony will make the mistake of allowing unsigned code to be run on initial hardware allocations of these babies? LOL

If they are cheap enough, I might buy one just for kicks to see what I could do with it. It is being released in September.

lol. These are pretty sweet, if we had processor speed details, this might be a great console for homebrew, i mean, with a built in keyboard, there is a lot more u could do. But considering this is just basicly a messenger/media handheld, i am not expecting anything spectacular (aside from the built in flash). But i dunno, i may buy one whent he price goes down. Also, i bet if its hacked security updates will get it, on the site it has a section for system updates.

Besides the Skype function, wouldn't a decent PDA be better?

/\ /\ It would depend greatly on the end price and its capabilities I suppose... Sounds like an interesting bit of kit though :)

Wouldn't this thing have to be incredibly affordable to NOT be a complete failure? Lets look at a few alternatives to this:

1.) Cell Phone
2.) Laptop
3.) PDA (Pocket PC)
4.) iPod

Looking at some of the competing mobile devices, this has the benefit of NO monthly service charges. Although the online features are nice, they are not exclusive to this device.

To compete, I would think this needs to be about $99.99. Does anyone know what the MSRP is set for this device?

they should put a UMD drive in it...
it might just work...
if they sell it at no more than £100 that is!

Does that phone play Video? If so, what resolution and what codec? MPEG-4? H.264 (AVC)? Also what type of storage does it use?

Does anyone know of any other phones or portable media devices that might be BETTER than this Mylo?

it seems it would make more sense just to buy a small laptop... the price is stupid(as usual)

oh, thanks to Video_freak for backing me up yesterday, good to know most people support legitimate homebrew.

Yup, it plays video. It has Windows Media Player built in, but I alway use TCPMP instead (much better) - supports the following files;
AVI (*.avi)
Matroska (*.mkv, *.mka)
MP4 (*.mp4, *.m4a)
Ogg Media (*.ogg, *.ogm)
ASF (*.asf)
MP3

...using the follwing compression formats;
Mpeg 1 Layer III
Ogg Vorbis
Musepack
Windows Media Audio
AC-3
AMR
Adpcm, uLaw
DivX
XviD
MPEG4-SP (plus B-frame support)
MPEG1
M-JPEG
Windows Media Video

Screen resolution is 320x240.

Uses miniSD for storage.

There is an updated version of this phone, with a CPU speed thats double the 200Mhz on mine. You'd be better off looking into that one (can't remember the name of it though...www.modaco.com would have more info)

Of course, the non-gaming device is more ergonomic than the gaming device. The PSP could have used those circular edges.

August 9th, 2006, 16:14
i like the psp better than the mylo in terms of shape...the psp does kinda look like a pad when you look at it sideways :p lol

This is a terrible idea. If Sony was gonna put out another handheld, it should have been more like a sidekick, where you don't need to be in a hotspot. What a waste of money, how often are you in a hotspot?

Video_freak
August 9th, 2006, 17:28
it depends if you use it at home, or on the train. at home, theres no problems about hot spots, but on the train or traveling, you might have more trouble. i know this is a portable and the whole point is to use it while traveling, but i dont want to pay to go on the internet.

i would like this if they dropped the price to 100 dollars and had homebrew it would be a second psp wait a minute that dosent make sense:( that sucks

A hundred dollars? Are you guys kidding me? Even the RAZR costs more than $100 and it doesn't even do half of what that can. I think Sony will aim for somewhere closer to $200-$350.

So this is why sony hasn't released a keyboard for the psp!Another exuse to get people to buy more hardware. With a keyboard and voip the psp would have this thing beat.

The Mylo has a nice look to it, especially the black one. If their was a sim card slot, I would get it to replace my cellphone. I might get it to go with my cellphone, seeing my campus is one big hotspot. If homebrew is compatible with it, and it cost around $150, I will probably get it. I just hop it uses better plastic for the screen so it won't scrath like the PSP.

Radiator, that K-Jam phone looks pretty sweet, but the Mylo I think has a nicer look to it.

No way, thats the price of a PSP or higher ($350). If Sony prices this at anymore than $149.99 it won't sell. And if they want it to sell to some degree of success, yes it will need to be $99.99 - $119.99.

The only reason it would be worth that much is the built in 1gb of storage. Hardly enough, but its at least something unlike the PSP.

Some argue that people may not often be in a hotspot. Well, where I live, I have my home, hotels, coffee shops, etc. that all have hotspots so if I was out on the town and needed to communicate, it would not be hard to hit a hotspot. For that reason, and that reason alone, I am considering getting one of these if they are cheap.

Why can't the price for the mylo be more than the PSP? You forget one thing: the mylo isn't specifically targeted to the "gaming" consumers. That's why sony can be quite liberal in pricing. It, in no way can be compared in pricing to a gaming device (PSP).

Case and Point: The Sidekick 3. The thing doesn't have a wireless adapter or the same media and storage capabilities as the mylo, yet the MSRP is $399.
