StrmnNrmn (http://www.strmnnrmn.blogspot.com/) has just released the newest version of Daedalus the Nintendo 64 Emulator for the PSP:

Heres the Changes

R7 - 13 August 2006
-------------------

[^] Avoid checking for interrupts in dynarec code in most situations.
[^] Optimise dynarec Load/Store instructions to avoid checking for interrupts directly.
[^] Implemented the remaining 32-bit integer instructions in the dynarec.
[^] Implemented the remaining commong load/store instructions in the dynarec.
[^] Implemented JAL/JR in dynarec.
[^] Optimised various texture cache related features.
[^] Added various known value optimisations to the dynarec engine.
[^] Link together blocks even when they exit with branch likely instructions.
[+] Added option to allow frequency of texture update checks to be reduced.
[+] Added the ability to configure buttons
[!] Fixed a couple of compatibility issues caused by the dynarec.
[!] Fixed a couple of issues related to self-modifying code and the dynarec.
[!] Fixed issues with the framerate counter flickering.

Heres more news of this release

The main emphasis has been on improving the framerate of as many roms as possible, but I've also made some significant fixes to the dynarec engine which should improve compatibility for a few roms where this was causing problems before.

There are two settings you should be aware of if you're looking at getting the fastest possible framerate. The first is on the global settings page (that's the one you see on the main menu as soon as you boot up). You'll want to set 'Tesselate Large Triangles' to No here. The next option that helps boost the framerate is set 'Texture Update Check' to Disabled on the Rom Settings screen. A combination of these two options give a significant speedup in various roms.

In R7 I've also added the ability to define your own custom controller configurations. You can define a new controller mapping by adding a new .ini file to the Daedalus/ControllerConfigs directory. There are a few examples in there already, and I'll look at posting a brief tutorial up here sometime soon. If you come up with a new mapping you think would be useful then email me (my address is in the readme.txt) and I'll post it up here and add it to a later release.

I think R8 is going to continue to focus on improving the framerate. I still have a lot of optimisations I want to get in, and I think these will help improve the framerate even further. I also want to spend a little time improving the front end, as it's getting harder for me to add new settings and options in there. I also want to add an option for changing some of the settings while a rom is running (i.e. I think it's time we had an in-game menu.) Another thing I'll look at for R8 is saving settings between runs of the emulator - this way Daedalus will remember which controller setup you prefer for each rom. Finally I want to add an option to quit back to the main menu without having to restart Daedalus.

Phew! That's quite a big list. I can't guarantee I'll be able to add all that for the next release, but that's what I'm currently aiming for. I think it's more important to try and release regularly (i.e. every 3-4 weeks) rather than try and cram everything into one go, so some of these features might move back to R9 if I slip behind.

My first job though is to move my development environment over from my old PC to the new 'beast'. I've had to put this release together through a Remote Desktop Connection to the old PC and I can't bear to do that any longer. It'll probably take a few days to get everything set up on the new PC, but it should be a lot less painful in the long run :)

ohh yea one more thing is it better to just leave the roms zipped or unzipped like does it matter in terms of speed would really like to hear from you guys if possible.

Hah!Ijust took out the big bob-omb.This is awesome.
The readme says something about having to decompress zipped roms but I don't know if this affects the speed as it decompresses it first then runs that.I've gotten up to 20 FPS on mario 64.

I just tried super mario. Its running @ an average of 15fps+. BTW guys, dont forget to run ur psps @ 333 not the default 222 (i dunno, it may make a difference). There is no sound though and there are a lot of graphical errors @ the expense of speed. Does anybody know how to reenable sound?

Pretty much what i'm getting this end with that texture thingy disabled.

Stunning improvement so far, so firstly my thanks.

Selected Game List Part One - (these were tested on the 1.50 version with the recommended setup from the release notes for maximum speed):

"Super Mario 64" is playable, with 15-20 frames per second on average. Quite a number of texture problems though, and either my PSP or this new release seems to want to send Mario right quite a bit without any controller input. Let me know if this is a problem common to everybody else.

"Nightmare Creatures" wouldn't work at all.

"Goldeneye" refuses to go past the Daedalus menu with the Start button pressed. It booted in R6 with the most amazing texture corruption. If somebody else could check this I'd be grateful.

"Harvest Moon 64 " runs with an almost bearable in-game framerate of seven per second (given that it is fairly slow anyway).

Selected Game List Part Two - (these were tested on the 1.50 version with the recommended setup from the release notes for maximum speed):

"Airboarders 64" - framerate of three to five per second. Something still satisfying about playing it though - textures problematic at the beginning, but you can still see what is going on mostly.

"Bomberman 64" - white border flickering at the side during opening menus. Game looked as if it had crashed at first...and then ended up really crashing with a Blue Screen of Death. Arrgghh - etc. etc.

"Bust-a-Move 2 - Arcade Edition" - figured this would be worth checking to see the strength of the 2-d emulation. UP TO 30 FRAMES PER SECOND AVERAGE and completely playable, bar an issue with the direction arrow for shooting. Really impressive. Do check it out.

PAL is 24fps
NTSC is 29.97(30) fps

drnicket are you talking about ingame?

cause deadalus emulates both at the same speed
the only reason that PAL runs faster is because the PAL version of games runs at 50fps max instead 60 fps
meaning that deadalus has -10fps to emulate when running a PAL game

remansano
August 13th, 2006, 23:48

Mario64 100mhz:avg 5.5 fps
222 8.5

these are on the bob-omb level

Great work still gonna wait for decnt fps cant be arsed wit hit stammering and juddering along.once again GREAT !!!!!

jOeBrO
August 14th, 2006, 00:03
the PAL version is faster than the NTSC because of the fact that deadalus only has to emulate 50 frames per second instead of 60(NTSC).

So if you were running mario 64 at 10fps on an NTSC version it would be running at 1/6 of fullspeed because it has to mantain a constant 60 frames per second to run fullspeed.

However, if you run a PAL version mario 64 at 10fps, it runs at 1/5 of fullspeed because a PAL version only needs a constant of 50 frames per second to maintain fullspeed. ;)

if you still dont understand there is a noticable difference when comparing them :)

I'm dissappointed in you wrag, why are you bringing up the "competition" so much in your posts? I wrote the QJ/PSPU article and had it all written for when he did release it - You weren't the only one on Sourceforge looking for the download.

I took the time to make a video for our users to show two games on the emulator, so even if you beat the "competition", you had to sacrafice something - quality...

zip works but it takes long to load it and you need to have enough memory on your memory stick because it just unzips it by it self to your memory stick so if you dont have enough memory then it wont work so just unzip it and your better off.

Hey since you have tested it now for houers witch games you found to play at better speed

jOeBrO
August 14th, 2006, 06:47
well.. this is just my speculation... but roms that are larger seem to run slower, my guess is because more of the RAM is used to store the rom.. i think this because:

Zelda: OoT - 32mb rom 5fps max
Mario 64 - 8mb rom 30fps max

but StrmnNrmn will have to tell you for sure

ACID
August 14th, 2006, 06:48
I notice that with larger games i was hopping to be able to play Zelda on the go

jOeBrO
August 14th, 2006, 06:56
yea but knowing StrmnNrmn he'll find a way to make it run at fullspeed,
plus if what i speculated is true.. then its probably just a matter of keeping the RAM free by streaming the larger roms into smaller pieces

I also tried WCW Nitro and got ingame somehow. The menus are not visible so they are almost impossible to navigate but this is what the game looked like.

progress check: got the boomerang, gonna edit this post to show the screens, but as my pc only has 1 usb slot it means disconnecting the web :(

NOTE:the FPS in the screens are lying, it was about 2-3fps, not 0.6fps, its cause it gives you the exact fps when you leave the pause mode type thing (when you press select) which makes it lower as no screens pass after you press select reducing the FPS,
although i guess 2-3fps is still slow

Also you know what I was thinking earlier, how Zx-81 (awesome coder) keeps saying that full speed gba on psp is not possible, and yet here we are with StrmnNrmn who says he plans to get N64 to full speed with sound. it probably has something to do with the gba's hardware specs; i respect Zx-81 a lot, and I use PSPVBA all the time, but it seems like the attitudes in the homebrew scene aren't consistent...i don't think i actually have a point, but it was just something i was thinking about.:)

yeh it has to do with the specs, N64's specs are more similar to the PSP's specs than GBA is, it's like trying to shove clothes in a suitcase, N64's "clothes" fit in the suitcase(the PSP), but there are twice the amount of "clothes" for GBA, so it's harder to pack :D...i know that i probably could have explained it better but i'm not a coder :p

I know what you mean :D Also:

I want to get to the point where the most popular dozen or so roms are running at full speed with sound and no compatibility problems. I'd also like to see much higher compatibility across all roms in general (including
graphical issues and save game support) There's a lot of work to do before I get to that point, but Daedalus will get closer to that goal with every incremental release.

Yo I don't mind the speed, I know he will keep working on it and it will get faster ... even if he has games only working at 25fps, dat's something to CHEER about!!! I mean seriously we are lucky to have talented people working hard on these ports.

Plus if you are glass half full kinda guy, think of the low fps as a cheat, as you can fight faster and react better to action games!

use GoodN64, it renames the roms so you can know the region, if it is a overdump, a baddump, etc.

August 15th, 2006, 03:16
whats the big deal with pal or ntsc to me it doesnt make a difference just cause one is made to run in 50 fps and the other 60 fps doesnt necessarily mean it will be noticeably better especially at this stage of the emulator. correct me if im wrong guys if only the person can provide proof.

Super Man the animated series looks pretty good now, iits not that fast, but it is playable. :)

It may not be the best game, but the most playable game I've tried so far is Rampage (I think someone else posted this to be running at 30fps too). Apart from the lack of sound this game looks and plays pretty much spot on. :)

There just aren't any 2.8 downgraders yet. Stay on the lowest possible firmware and maybe you'll get lucky one day. :)

I'm only getting 8 FPS average on SM64. And it won't save. O_o

I finally tried it this afternoon, and I must say that it's MUCH better than when I was playing with Daedalus in June. Keep up the amazing work StrmnNrmn :)

go to settings and turn off the "tesselate tris" and the go to rom selection the select SM64 and make sure the following is correct on ur psp...Save type u can't change but its at "Eeprom4k", Expansion Pak "No", Dynamic Recomplilation "Enabled", Texture update check "Disabled" if everything is on these settings u should get about 12-20 fps(depending on where u are)

I tried Wonder Project J 2 (Jap) and its possibly one of the best working games in Daedalus , maybe cause its 2d.

How do you take screenshots in Daedalus and Devhook?
Also, i just tried Mario 64 with the "tesselate tris" setting off, and it's amazing.

that's why i have been playing it for 2 going on 3 days :D, and as far as screenys go for Daedalus u press "select" and hit "square" and devhook i think it's the "note button" or that could be the custom fw...i forgot lol

Hi Mandeep22,

Just so you are aware the latest version to be released is R8 so check it out (search the forums for the download). There won't be sound for a few releases yet, R9 (the next one due) will have more graphical fixes, a little more speed, and a proper menu/GUI.

Regards.
