Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai has claimed the PlayStation 3 has accrued 30 million sign-ups for online service PSN.

While Hirai did not specify how many of these were active accounts as opposed to registrations, it equates to roughly 80 per cent of 38 million PS3s sold worldwide.

Hirai told Reuters at TGS that Sony hoped to bump this up to 100 per cent of PlayStation 3 users.

By contrast, Microsoft's Xbox Live sported 23 million users as this February, but unlike PSN many of these pay a subscription fee.

The SCE CEO also asserted his belief that the firm would meet its target of 15 million PlayStation 3 sales from March 2009 to March 2010.

"As of the end of August, sales look a bit better than we expected," he said.

He also denied that the PlayStation Portable range might see a 3D version any time soon, and in a careful swipe at Kinect claimed that motion controllers were best used in tandem with traditional input devices.
