Warning: Counterfeit and Unlicensed PlayStation®3 Wireless Controller (Recommendation: use only genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controller)

Counterfeit PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.

SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support.

In addition to counterfeit controllers, if you have upgraded to the new 3.50 firmware to get the 3D Blu-Ray playback, don't be surprised if your unofficial USB devices no longer work. Sony failed to mention that they also prevented majority of 3rd party peripherals to not work unless its licensed Sony products.

Members from the Official PlayStation forum have started a list (http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Updates/3-50-Disabled-75-of-3rd-Party-USB-ADAPTERS/td-p/46201493) of what USB devices do not work. I've heard Bannco's FRAGnStein was also one of them that did not work but Bannco released a new firmware (http://bannco.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=87&Itemid=15) update for the controller to make it work again. But not all 3rd party devices are upgradeable with a simple flash of a firmware.

What's next Sony? You're going to remove online play so people can't cheat or trash talk? I hope this wasnt intentional as 3rd party manufacturers will be very upset about this.

*UPDATE*
We've been informed by XCM that their PS3 products such as their XCM XFPS Fire Light Gun (http://reviews.dcemu.co.uk/review-xcm-xfps-fire-light-gun-318343.html), Cross Battle Adapter 2.0 (http://reviews.dcemu.co.uk/review-xcm-cross-battle-adapter-2-0-269526.html), RateUp Adapter (http://reviews.dcemu.co.uk/review-xcm-xfps-rateup-adapter-116932.html) and XFPS Force 4.0 (http://reviews.dcemu.co.uk/review-xcm-xfps-4-0-force-280708.html), all work on 3.50 firmware.

Awesome... Luckily for me, I buy only official SONY products.

On the first PlayStation, if my memory serves me correctly. SONY had a thing, where the use of un-official products would void the warranty. Meaning that using an un-official memory card, controller or even a cheat device would render the warranty useless to the user.

I seriously recommend only buying SONY products for the console, where the un-official products do not compare so well.

if anyone actually believes that there a moron. sony is just spreading lies so they have a reason to only allow sony devices to be used via the usb port. there making this up so when all usb devices are blocked they can say thats the reason instead of "we are doing this because of psgroove" plus it makes them more money because now you have to pay $50 for a controller instead of being able to buy a 3rd party controller for $19.99. its nothing but a huge lie from sony. there getting to be pretty downright greedy and sneaky. there becomming worse the microsoft, ninetendo, and apple. at least they dont make BS reason why there doing something.

A smart person would know not to listen to Sony. Sony is using scare tactics and pushing Official products so they can make money from those who are gullible. Sony has no way of knowing if an unofficial/official product was used.

I have aftermarket accessories, cables, chargers and what not and never had a problem with any of my consoles or electronic devices whether it be CD/MP3 player or cellphones.

So swapping a harddrive will void warranty even though harddrives are not made by Sony? You know whats also funny? When new consoles are launched, retail stores like GameStop/Electronic Boutique, Toys'R'Us, Best Buy, etc. usually bundle systems with 3rd party accessories.

guess my PS3 will always stay on 3.41, I have 2 official sony controllers but this is simply BS.

Still working on my jailbreak, I found a development usb plate, which is said to work with psgroove, so I'll be geting that one.

According to kotaku this has killed a few old madkatz pads.

Yet another useless forced update for the sake of "protecting" your PS3 (their wallets). lmao
