Strmnnrmn (http://strmnnrmn.blogspot.com/) posted this news:

"I got back from my trip yesterday and I've spent a few hours today putting together the final changes for Daedalus PSP R8.

Here's the changelist:

[^] Replaced all uses of sceCtrlReadBufferPositive with sceCtrlPeekBufferPositive.
[^] Various known value optimisations for the dynamic recompilation engine.
[^] Various texture cache optimisations and rendering optimisations.
[+] Implemented a new clipping method which is more efficient and gives better results.
[-] Removed 'tesselate large triangles' setting.
[+] Added option to reset emulator to the main menu.
[^] No longer use index buffers for rendering.
[^] Implement matrix multiplication using VFPU.
[^] Implement vertex transform and lighting code using VFPU.
[^] Implement clipping code using VFPU.
[^] Minor AddTri optimisations.
[^] Free background and font textures while emulator is running to free VRAM.
[!] Fixed bug in default controller config (c-down and dpad-down were broken)

It should be pretty obvious that most of the changes in R8 are optimisations. This build is significantly faster than R7, which is a significant achievement considering how much R7 had achieved in this area. Here's an updated view of the framerate table I introduced a couple of months ago and updated recently:

Scene R4 fps R5 fps R7-beta fps R8 fps
Mario Head 3 6 8 8
Mario Main Menu 14 25 30 38
Mario Peach Letter 6-7 11 13 18
Mario Flyby (under bridge) 6 10 12 17
Mario In Game 5-6 9 11 15
Mario Kart Nintendo logo 10 23 24 35
Mario Kart Flag 6 11 13 16
Mario Kart Menu 7 11 13 14
Zelda Nintendo Logo 20 23 ? 70
Zelda Start Menu 2-3 4 ? 8
Zelda Main Menu 10 13 ? 40

I think the numbers speak for themselves. What's particularly impressive is that the R8 results are so high, despite having the new clipping code enabled by default. By implementing the triangle clipping code and the transform and lighting code using the PSP's VFPU I've managed to keep the additional cost to a minimum.

With the previous release, I also mentioned a list of things I had planned for R8. I decided to put them on hold while I pursued the various optimisations in R8, so I'll be looking at working on them for the next release.

Have fun - I'm going to wade through the past couple of weeks worth of emails that have built up while I've been putting this build together :)"

Cool R8 is officially out. Want to compare it with the pre-release build. Those numbers do look good. Shows the improvement that has been steadily been being made on this emu.
Keep up that great work!!!

This is great. I've watched this progressing, but haven't yet tried it.

I've tried it now and I am amazed.

Mario 64 seems to be fully playable at the moment, and only a little sluggish - however once you enter the first area, the framerate will drop a lot to around 10 fps.

PS. it works on 2.00 through eloader.

August 26th, 2006, 03:21
Rampage world tour is also running great. It was already playable before but now its even better, of course. Another game I play with this emu is Virtual Chess64 because you donīt need that much fps and sound. Itīs a pain playing with the analogic though

this runs kinda slow and is still not up to "playable" for me yet its very slow in the beginning epecailly on the intro

rampage

runs very well i actually have fun with this one runs good in game and is very playable

zelda 64

omg let me say very long waiting time iv been here for about 30 min until it actually started its ok still slow not at its best yet for me

ball park for me wen this emu will be complete and many games fully playable i belive r13-15 thats a good number il give it

Hmmm I love this emulator as the rest of you, and believe me I admire Strmmmn's great work as always. But I do believe that the Pre-R8 release was faster than this current R8 release. Of course the pre was more choppy and less smoothe were the official is. But it definently won for playabilty and speed. I definently want to see those won back for R8 as those are very important to have when emulation a system such as N64, or any emulator when it basically comes right down to it =S

the reason the pre R8 was faster is cuz u were still able to turn on/off tesselate large tris, that option isn't in the official R8 release cuz it was running fast enough where we don't need it

This is absolutley fantastic !!! This emu is on of the crowning achievements of PSP Homebrew. I'm currently looking for my broom & dustpan to sweep my jaw up off the floor. lol. Great work, StrmnNrmn.:D

EDIT: I tested 4 roms. Mario64, Mario Kart64, Rampage, & MK Trilogy. The first three were playable w/ no noticable graphical glitching.:) MK Trilogy did run, but at an average of 13fps with major graphical glitches. (The fighters appeared only as silloettes.)
Excellent work.:D

Full Speed releases worth looking at
Pokemon Stadium 2 (damn this is 64mb and its already full speed)
Forsaken
Bust a move (all three)
Star Soldier - vanishing earth
ExtremeG- Not sure if this is full speed yet (I assume so)

super smash bros works but still no 1 player mode (training or vs only) and characters are invisible, fps= 10-15(also dynamic needs to be off)

Ok, maybe Goldeneye too.... :-)

I know I am, and i bet many more are too, but the next game I'm hoping will be worked on(like sm64) aside from zelda is smash bros. that was one of the most popular games on n64, gc, and most anticipated for wii. if we could have super smash brothers working(past character selection) that would be awsome.

Hey guys,

In Super Mario 64, what button do you use when promted to save. I tried x and square, but neither of my games saved when I did that.

Any help would be appreciated.

jak66
August 26th, 2006, 16:27
when asked what you want to do (save and continue, save and quite, contine dont save) press the button mapped to A (usually X) then press select, the memory stick light should flash a little, then your game should be saved

just about to learn first song on loz:oot, (zelda's lullaby) will try to post screens later
with dynamic on i got around 8-10fps, but unfortunatly it crashed so i tried with dynamic off, its around 2-5 fps (mainly 3) and no crashes yet so hopefully i can get to second dungeon (i cant remember how you spell the name though lol)

Alucard
August 26th, 2006, 16:36
Yeah, that's what I thought. But it didn't work. I have not been deleting the older version of Daedalus when installing the new. When I deleted what I had on my card, and tried the new one, all worked beautifully.

Poem58
August 26th, 2006, 16:42
this is the first release I tried...TOO FREAKIN SWEET!!!
Star Soldier works with minor graphics issues....very minor in my opinion and very close to perfect speed if not....Star Fox...it said 9-12fps...absolutely NO WAY it was that slow...at least it didn't seem that slow....until the 3rd level in the underwater world...hit 3-4fps and REALLY SEEMED it ....went from never getting hit much to dead as you couldn't see enough to stay alive well...

Awsome all the way around that it is that good!!

Xiro
August 26th, 2006, 17:02

Best I have found so far (Working on a complete list, finished the B's right now ;)): These are all in-game numbers...

Aerogauge - 16
All Star Tennis 99 - Eeprom4k - 21
Blues Brothers 2000 - 16
Bust-A-Move '99 - 25
Bust-A-Move 2 – Arcade Edition - 36 (missing the dial texture, I recommend '99)
Mario Kart 64 - 15
Quest 64 - 21
Star Fox 64 - 18
Super Mario 64 - Eeprom4k - 15

I'll be posting the full compat. that I found later... right now i've tested 46 and 26 work (50% working!) Of course they aren't all literally playable, missing textures, etc.. but those 26 are all going in-game. Impressive!

EDIT:

Some more for your fun...

Aerogauge - 16
Blues Brothers 2000 - 16
Charlie's Blast Territory - 15
Chopper Attack - 13
Deadly Arts - 11

EDIT 2:

Duke Nukem Zero Hour - 9 (very little issues other than speed)
Earthworm Jim 3d - 16 (texture issues)

A quick update, out of 83 games tested.. I'm through the E's, 49 went in-game (again, not fully playable, texture issues and so forth, but still a great accomplishment!)

EDIT 3:

New additions (now through G's)

Forsaken - 20 (missing object textures, but definitely playable)
Glover - 10

This list is USA games only, btw... haven't tried Japanese games...

Honestly, I haven't really been keeping up with this emulator simply because it just didn't seem like it would ever be possible to make it as good as it is now. This is the first release I've downloaded since R1 and I'm very impressed, and was actually playing Mario 64 for a little while. Keep this up, I'm really shocked by this.

Super Mario 64 - Eeprom4k - 15

I'll be posting the full compat. that I found later... right now i've tested 46 and 26 work (50% working!) Of course they aren't all literally playable, missing textures, etc.. but those 26 are all going in-game. Impressive!

Thanks for the list keep it up we realy need one.

sorry about not posting this stuff yesterday, heres are the screenshots and my own save data that starts inside of dodongos cavern!!!

to use it must be the same name as your rom
i.e. your rom should be in ms0:/n64/ or ms0:/psp/game/daedalus/roms/
if it is called zelda64.z64
the save should be in ms0:/psp/game/daedalus/savegames/
and called zelda64.sra

(due to time and speed limits, this save has no bottles yet, to avoid random crashes/freezes like i had when i got to bomb chest turn dynamic off)

How are you people getting saving to work in Zelda? If I save from the in-game menu and press select, when I play the game again I don't have a save file. Do you have to get to the Deku Tree first before you can save or something?

When I try to launch a ROM (like Mario Kart 64 - which you guys say works great) - I just get unending Mem Stick access with a black screen. The Application itself seems to work fine....

I am launching the ROM by hitting the "start" button - is this correct? PS I am using the latest v8 release....

Just download the files, put the two folders inside your psp/game folder on your psp directory and put the roms in the rom folder. It's still slow though with alot of graphical errors. Ths was being updated reguarly, I'm not sure whats happening now.

Musoka_Eimin
November 10th, 2006, 23:31
matt you need to do some more research into all this, but here is a start to point you the right way, homebrews only work straight out of the game folder on ver 1.50 since you have 2.50 you can either figure out the best way to downgrade your firmware or you can use one of fanjita's eboot loaders i believe on 2.50, you should be able to figure out a way to get things running but its going to take a little research and decision on your part hope this helps

http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/sd00046rw.JPG

No one really knows whats happened to him, but i will say this. Where ever he has gone i wish him much luck in what ever he does and i want to thank him for the releases he has done so far. I do understand from being a coder that there could have been various reasons why he had left the scene namely users asking to many question and bugging about the next update and being unappreciative due to not running at flawless speed or having sound.

Thou i do hope that strmnnrnm has not left the scene if he has it is a reality we all have to live with. Thats just being honest!

yea it is quite odd for a coder who has a blog and is relitivly known on the internet, to suddenly vanish without a trace on the net. That seems quite odd. In the time spand from his last blog entrie to know thats a long time for a coder to not be online don't you think.

I hope nothing bad happened to him as well as his loved ones.

can someone help me here I can't seem to make Daedalus R8 work

the first thing I did I downloaded: daedalus_psp_R8_v150

then I put a rom (Star Fox 64) in the rom folder

then I put both Deadalus and Daedalus% in my PSP/GAME folder

after that I go to Game then Memory Stick on my psp and then select Daedalus and then this message pops up saying:

This game cannot be started.
The data is corrupted

also my Deadalus% appears as a corrupted file

can someone help me make this damn emulator work, please?

What firmware do you have? Go look at the stickie on how to run any homebrew before asking stuff like that ;)

Yeah Happy new year and good luck to the Packers in tonights game, Wally who works closely (or at least did) with StrmnNrmn said that R9 will come out and that to not lose hope. If you ask me (captain morgan, if you remember the Captain Morgan Compatability Test Results for Daedalus) I think StrmnNrmn just took a while to like work on the emulator without distraction. Like one day he'll just pop out and release R9 and it'll just be out of this world, maybe even a perfect N64 emulator!

I was hoping that Strmnmrmn was going to surprise us all on Christmas or New Years. I wish he would at least let us know that he is not working on the emu anymore if he has stopped. Hopefully someday he will rejoin the scene or someone else will pick up where he left off because he had a real amazing piece of work.

Yeah I really was hoping he'd pop up during Xmas or New Year's too. I don't want to sound or create any false rumors but it's like he died. I know the odds of him actually dying are incredibly high but I mean the way he just suddenly left with no remarks or anything it's like he died?
