Syn-Z (http://syn-k.sakura.ne.jp/dgen_psp/) has released a new version of what is the best Genesis emulator for the PSP, heres a translation of whats new:

Approximately 20% acceleration
[Adding “BGM Speed Fix” to CONFIG]
When (it turns to ON, processing becoming heavy, sound does not become slow.
However, there is no effect and/or depending upon the game trouble comes out.
In addition, at the time of communication opposition it becomes mandatorily OFF. )

Note: If the first two packages don't work, use the DGEN_170_Lite.zip instead. Or try using PicoDrive instead.

i have googled to see the genesis games...but they dont seem good...i mean i cant find any game that can be interesting to say the least.....why would someone bother to make an emulator for a console built in 1990.
Maybe someone knows some good games...if someone
actually bother to make this than there must be some good games....can someone recommend some????

Briggzy11
August 26th, 2006, 22:59
Im happy of the new release...

...But 20% Speed increase??? I thought it was full speed anyway???

Plus not all games work still, any chance this could support Virtua Racing soon, I know its difficult to emulate but hopefully it will work soon :)

Great work anyway I suppose I wont notice the 20% ever however lol

GAMES I CAN RECOMMEND...

Sonic (All Games)
Zombies Ate My Neighbours
Alien
Outrun
Rock & Roll Racing
Michael Jacksons Moonwalker :)

Speed-wise this is getting close to perfect, but it still needs a lot of work. Many games still don't run, and other games like Sonic the Hedgehog worked before but now crash before starting the first level. Plus six-button support still doesn't work and the sound bug fix apparently doesn't work, because I played Lemmings and the sound was was way too fast.

psp828
August 27th, 2006, 01:18
spaceman spiff the only reason sonic crashes is because you have the wrong settings. when you start up the emulator before you go in to any games go to the menu and change couintry priority from what ever your setting is to usa now you will beable to play alote more games that didn't work before. hope that helps.

psp828

also the sound fix is when you have frameskip set on 0.

There sort of isn't a point in not updating. If there's a newer version, it doesn't take much energy to update. Just switch out the eboots and stay up to date.

The crash happens as a result of an illegal instruction when the first level starts. This has nothing to do with country priority. I tried with CPU set to normal and performance and it crashed both times.

It works a lot better now :D Dynamite Headdy plays smoothly at frameskip 1.

Anyway there should be more speed in later versions, until it works without frameskip, at 60fps, with most games :)

But for now, you can play nearly all the games with very low frameskip n___n Coool!!!

Really? I had the same crash with CPU set to performance, set it back to normal and sonic 1 runs fine. FW 1.5

Great emulator, with a little more work I think we'll have full speed with no frameskip :)

EDIT: Kawasaki Superbike Challenege is playable, it has some jibberish characters down the bottom but it runs.
Watch the awsome polygon-pushing abilities of the megadrive in action and stand in awe :D

This emulator refuses to play Double Dragon :(

SpacemanSpiff
August 27th, 2006, 15:22
Bah: You're probably right, because the emu loads the default options when you load a new game, so when I changed the CPU to normal and tried Sonic it probably changed the CPU back to performance (which was my default setting). The guy writing the emu should add an option to run with current settings instead of switching to default every time.

donne
August 27th, 2006, 16:36
yes the "b" file is the 1.5 d/l, and "home", then "yes" will exit the emu :D

Ah.. He really loved that home button, eh ? I just being paranoid. Though Home was a cold way to stop the game and somewhat did not clear the Ram or something... Almost any emu got an exit option..

1.6 was an excellent version, the only problems i had with it seemed to be compatibility... (Lotus, Xenon II) showing black graphcs or screens.

shame none of this seems to have been fixed from what i've tried, given that the speed of the emulator was (is) already excellent.

i would like to be really cheeky and say "cos they are s***" - but i should control myself.

as i stated above, i am not convinced DGen in the most compatibile of the MD emulators, though it seems to have nailed the performance aspect.

maybe 1.80 will have increased game compatibilty?

i'd love to know what the 68000 core is based on too..... in the interest of pspuae of course. :)

Yeah, like I said above the emu loads the default settings every time you start a new game, so when I changed the CPU settings at first it didn't go into effect when I loaded Sonic again because I didn't save it as the default setting.

If you were using 1.0 eBoots for use with the eLoader you will have to convert or download the 1.5 version of the emulator. Then it should work fine.

MetalMind
October 30th, 2006, 07:13
It comes with adhoc. You just have to load the emu with 2 PSPs, same rom. Then one of the players have to pick the 1P (adhoc) option, and the other one 2P (adhoc) one. The first one will be the first player and the other the second ;)

It isn´t that hard.

Now if we could only get this speed out of SNES emus.....

SNES TYL 0.42 ME is faster than this. Most SNES games run full speed without any frame skipping at all, but a lot of games still need frameskipping to run full speed with DGen.

Well, that would be it. I'm running a 2.71 PSP so no ME. But NesterJ still works so I'm happy.

Although, I am having trouble with DGen. Like I said, I'm running a 2.71 PSP with eLoader 0.99 everything seems to run except DGen. Is it using kernal mode that won't run in this eLoader? I thought I saw a post earlier that someone was running this in 2.71 with no issues. Any advice on how I can get this done would be appreciated.

Oh, btw, the emu doesn't even load, crashes the eLoader.

Since late 2005 I'd been using PSP Genesis but heard a lot of good things about DGen so I installed 1.70 last night. So far I like it alot, beautiful emu, video/speed definitely seems improved over PSPGenesis with great presentation as well. But my Rockman Megaworld/Wily Wars and Contra Hard Corps will not run (both ran fine on PSP Genesis), and I've tried several different roms from another source. Anyone else have issues running either title on DGen?

edit: 3 different roms now for each from at least two different sources now and DGen still will not run them. When trying to boot either Wily Wars or Contra, it just goes to a black screen on the view window. In the process I also discovered DGen will not run the Genny rev of Sparkster, just goes to a screen with region info and a message from whoever dumped the rom. Looks like I'll keep my PSPGenesis for these and any other odd games that won't work.

Contra - Hard Corps is working fine for me in V 1.70
Try to mess around with Settings->Country priority and choose the first priority what country your game is from (i guess it's a (U)=USA version).
I don't have Rockman, but i guess DGen is absolute superior to PSPGenesis since V 1.30

Hi guys

Just a quick question to which I have not been able to find an answer.

Basically are there any PSP Emu's that play the Sega Genesis 32X games.... or are we restricted to megadrive/genesis games only??

Thanks in advance

b8a
February 1st, 2007, 10:45
YNWA2006: There is no support for 32X or Sega CD on the PSP (as far as I know)

Dylan1CC: I kept hearing that Dgen was the best, so I never bothered trying any of the other emulators. It works just great for most of my games, but the only one I ever REALLY want to play (Revenge of Shinobi) is pretty slow and almost unplayable in it. But after reading your post, I downloaded PSPGenesis and gave it a shot. Wow, much better. Still just a bit slow, but at least it's playable now. Thanks for the heads up.

Dylan1CC

O-bake: Thanks for the info but I already tried the country priority setting and they still would not load. And again, bear in mind I used several different roms for each game from several different sources.

b8a: Glad PSPGenesis is working well for you. It's a very good emu, it'd be great if the author released some more updates for it.

Now, more issues to report with DGen. Last night I gave Earthworm Jim and Gunstar Heroes a spin.

In GH there is very noticeable slowdown and frame rate drops. As an example, I was playing stage 1 and was surrounded by baddies. So, of course I did the jump/dive move to evade them. As my guy was flying through the air/landing the animation slowed and became quite choppy. While sliding down the pyramid/slope, my character disappeared a few times.

In EJ, getting hit by an enemy will cause your character sprite to completely disappear for several moments at a time which literally gives you an invisible Jim firing his gun out of thin air. I have never experienced either issue when playing these games with PSPGenesis.

edit: To clarify, I am using PSPGenesis 18c and all the games I just discussed run very well. GSH and Earthworm Jim both seem to run in full speed none of the mentioned issues.

That's because most games use sprite flickering after you get hit (I.E. they only draw the sprite every other frame). If you are using frameskipping and the frames being skipped are the same as the frames where the sprite is being displayed then you won't see the character sprite until the effect stops. The only way to avoid this is if the emulator supports random/automatic frame skipping (which I dont think DGen does).

That's still no excuse for the fact this emulator needs a lot of work. And I never mess with frame skipping options. Anyways, I moved all my roms back into my PSPGenesis folder and surprise! All my old roms load, no flickering, no disappearing sprites and even the busiest games such as Gunstar Heroes run full speed. DGen is completely overhyped.

If you didn't change the frameskip settings but the sprites still disappear then it must be enabled by default. If you turn it off by setting max frameskip to zero then the sprites won't disappear anymore when you get hit. (I probably should have made this clearer in my last post.) Its not like most games need it to run full speed either.

No I didn't use DGen's frame skip at all. I never touch frame skip when I use an emulator because the way I see it, if it's a good emulator it should automatically run the games as close to they are on TV/console without having to mess with some setting in the menu. Last night I also tried Thunderforce 3 and the ship kept disappearing. Very lame.

Anyways, DGen is too much hassle and like I said is overhyped with all its problems. I'm sticking with PSPGenesis.

February 2nd, 2007, 10:13
Hmm, Dylan1CC, I think there may be a problem with your games. I highly doubt that DGen is overhyped because it runs my games flawlessly.

After I read your post, I went back and checked my copy of Gunstar Heroes. Perfect. I didn't even mess around with the settings at all and I had no problems, not even the ones you mentioned. I also retried Revenge of Shinobi once more, this time trying it with all of the different region priority settings. I could've sworn I had already tried them all in the past, but this time I found one that runs it the same speed as PSPGenesis, but smoother.

So, as of now, DGen is back to being my top --and only-- pick for Genesis emulation. Quite honestly, while PSPGenesis was impressive (especially for such an old release), it stuttered a lot.

bah
February 2nd, 2007, 13:38
DGen is not over-hyped.
It runs the vast majority of games better than PSPGenesis.

Its a quality emulator, if you're not capable of changing 1 or 2 settings in the menu occasionally thats certainly not something to criticize the emulator over.

You're free to use whatever emulator you want, the authors created them and asked nothing in return. No need to put down someones hard work, especially when many others clearly do not have the issues you do.

If you are too stupid/lazy that you can't even change one option in the menu to fix your problem then that's fine (albeit pretty pathetic), but youo should be forewarned that if you are using frameskipping in PSPGenesis you will most likely have the same problem with sprites disappearing. (And if frameskipping is disabled by default then most games will only get 30-40 fps at best.)

are we gona see any updates for this emu in the future? it has been almost a year now, I was playing sonic 1-3 the other day and i can really notice a slowdown in frame rates between the three games.

I noticed that sonic one had some huge bugs when trying to laod the saved states and I just can't seem to get more than 55fps without frame skip on, it looks good at frame skip1 but even better with it turned on!

I've played all the Sonic games with it and it runs fine. 30fps is what games should typically be aiming for. 55fps is incredible.....while anything over 60fps can't be registered with the human eye.

errr... games should be aiming for 50 / 60 fps depending on whether they are running as PAL or NTSC, as this is the speed the original machines run at.

This emulator could use development, but the key factor for getting more speed will be the 68000 processor core, for which there is the FAME/C core as a faster alternative, but tests with PSPUAE have proved it to be somewhat less compatible.

If DGen was open-source i'm sure there would be progress. Maybe someone should lobby the authors to release it.

sorry, i should have specified that the PSP version needs to be open source.

i do think its a bit cheeky to make a port based on other peoples work, and then not make that source open as well.

Yes, some games like Jurassic Park crashes the emulator. Change the mode to Normal instead Performance. If it not work you must another emulator (Megaman: Wily Wars dont run in DGEN)

You instaled the 1.50 add-on ? DGEN requires the 1.50 kernel to run and 3.71 M33-2 doesnt come with it.

This problem occurs with me when i copy the emulator from a MS to another.DGEN shuts of my PS P . Just delete the two folders of the emulator in the MS and unzip again the contents of the zip file of the emulator in GAME150.

Wow, you must be new seeing your post count is one.

Here's the question I got for you and I'm not trying to be sarcastic...

Why the hell are you trying to get this emu to work?
If you kept up with the PSP scene, you would know that DGEN and PSPgenesis are soooooo old. Picodrive for PSP is the best Genesis emu around! You can play sega Genesis games 60 FPS with no frameskipping, have awesome sound, and the kicker...
PLAY SEGA CD GAMES!
That's the emu you should download because that is what everyone else has done. Just go a page or two in the main PSP News Thread and you'll find Picodrive. PM me if you run into any problems or need help.

EDIT: Just in case you are a bit lazy and don't want to do the page surfing or use the search button, here's the link to Picodrive-

It would help if there was some indication on the menu bar down the left hand side of the main page as to which emulator for each system is the most advanced/compatible/preferred by the community.

I guess it may seem kind of rude to the authors of the alternatives, but there really is no way for newbs to find out which emu to use for each system without them asking in a thread like this or starting their own.

I do apologize for being a bit rude though (I know he is new and all, sorry), It was a reaction due to this thread "coming back from the dead" and my mindset of knowing Dgen 1.7 is about a year and a half old. I prefer Picodrive over Dgen any day due to the fact that
1) I don't have many friends who own a PSP in order to play adhoc multiplayer with.
2) Quoted from you Baboon, " far better at emulating all the sega games "
3) It's new and 10x better than the last Genesis Emu entries.
Of course, this is a matter of opinion from me but I've played between DGEN, PSPgenesis, and Picodrive and frankly... Picodrive mops the floor of the other two. OF course multiplayer would be a great addition, maybe Notaz will add it down the road after he adds a bit more updates to the gp2x version (just like Exophase is doing right now ...)

NOTE: I'm really crossing my fingers that Notaz ports his SNES emu from GP2x to PSP. Seeing that he did an awesome job at the Genesis emulation makes me wondered what he did on the SNES front ;)!

Wow all I had to do was launch the game with square instead on circle. I tried doing this solo but pressing square does nothing at all. Do I have to have another PSP close in order for it to boot the game with adhoc, isn't there some detection screen I should be going to first or something? Can you please answer my questions or help me some how because I had trouble with NES and SNES. After connecting to the other PSP with adhoc and launching the game in both NES and SNES the games would freeze and eventually give one of the PSP's an error and I'd have to manually reset that PSP. I can't get the adhoc multiplayer to fully work for any emulator, just a crash after the games launch or after a few seconds of gameplay. That error is generally the case from trying to run 1.50-based homebrew on the 3.xx/4.xx kernel. If you have a Phat, be sure you have the 1.50 add-on, and make sure to put the app in GAME150. If you have a Slim, you'll need Time Machine to run it.

In any case, you should be using PicoDrive, not DGen. PicoDrive is much better and written for the latest custom firmware.
