Introduction

Dark_Alex and Mathieulh (http://downgrader.lan.st/) (Donate to them (http://downgrader.lan.st/)) have released a new downgrader for PSPs with 2.71 firmware thats only possible due to the recent Tiff Exploit that was found (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=33751&highlight=Tiff+Exploit). Once you run and are successful your PSP will be a homebrew friendly v1.5 PSP which can play all Homebrew, Emulators and even the Devhook UMD loader so you'll still be able to play 2.71 games on your v1.5 PSP. All PSP users owe thanks to Bigbird for sacrificing 3 psps, and also to Xairu, wakAwooki (UP chip) and Joshrulez2 (http://xedinayc.wordpress.com/2006/09/01/donation-link-for-joshrulez2s-psp/) (bricked) as well as others for risking their PSPs.

Some History

This isnt the first Downgrader for the PSP, Dark_Alex, Yoshihiro and Mathieulh released the 2.5/2.6 Downdater on July 2nd 2006 (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28007), and before that was the V2.0 to V1.5 Downgrader (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=11365) which was released back in 2005. Theres also a V1.5 to V1.0 downgrader (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28286) whch was released July 6th this year.

Whats Downgrading ?

Every PSP has a firmware, if your playing the latest PSP games then most likely you have a PSP 2.71 and if your unlucky the PSP 2.80 firmware. Now for those that dont know the best firmware for homebrew and much more is V1.5 Firmware. All the downgraders can make your machine go back to that firmware so you can enjoy the many thousands of games released for homebrew.

2.71 Downdater by Dark_AleX/Mathieulh/Yoshi

This software is free, unlicensed and comes with no warranty. Despite it has been tested and it has worked, a program that rewrites a big part of the flash(flash0) is always dangerous. You are the only responsable of whatever happens to your psp using this unlicensed program.

This program requires that someone with a 1.50 runs a little program and send you the output so
you can init the downdate process. (by legal reasons i cannot provide those files directly, that's why this is needed).
The 1.50 program is TOTALLY safe, it only dumps the flash of a 1.50 user and it also extracts some special prx's found in the 1.50 updater.

The downdater directory outputted is exactly the same than the created by the 2.60/2.50 downdater.

IMPORTANT NOTE: TA-082 users, this doesn't work on these psp's. DO NOT RUN IT.

Instruction for the 1.50 user
-----------------------------

1) Copy the folders downhelper and downhelper% from the folder 1.50 HELPER folder to
/PSP/GAME/ in your memstick.

2) Obtain the 1.50 updater and put it in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE in your memstick.

3) Init the downhelper program.
It will dump your flash and some files from the updater eboot to the memstick.

4) After that, the program will exit. You can now delete the updater from /PSP/GAME/UPDATE

5) You'll notice that you have a new folder in the root of your memstick called "DOWNDATER".
That's the folder you'll have to send to a 2.71 to let him use the downdater.



Instructions for the 2.71 user
-------------------------------

1) Copy the files inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.

2) Wait someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.

3) It is recomended that you have the psp at more than 50% batteery and connected to AC

4) Go to the xmb photo viewer.

At this point will one of the following things:

a) You'll see a full red screen. This indicates that the downdater is doing its job.
Wait for it to finish. When it finish it will crash on purpose. Restart your psp manually
and you'll probably have a 1.50 if nothing went wrong.

b) You don't see the red screen. This indicates that the downdater code has not started
to execute. (even if the memstick blinks(or no), it doesn't matter! if the screen is not red, you can safely restart
the psp at this point).

This happen because of inestability in the tiff.
Don't worry, just restart the psp and keep trying until you reach the red screen of downdate.
The downdater code is NEVER executed partially. It's either executed totally or nothing.

It depends of "luck" but usually the downdater will start to execute in a average of 1/10 times.
Things that may increase the probabilities:

- A fresh formatted memory stick.
- A 32 MB memory stick (and fresh formatted)

I updated my eu psp from version 2.7 to 2.71 then i ran the downgrader with a dump from the 2.6 auto downgrader thing.

And it worked. It took 5 or 6 attempts to run but it worked fine when the red screen came up.

psp-hacks has the COMPLETE package including the so-called "illegal" files.

To all with a 2.70 PSP, just upgrade to 2.71 and then use the downgrader. If you for some reason have doubts and want 2.71, use DevHook and your 1.50 PSP will also be a 2.71 PSP.

I'm playing new 2.71 required games like Pac-Man World Rally and Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins (2.60) on my 1.50 PSP. Life is good!

I followed all the steps, all the files were in the correct place etc. The screen went red, then crashed (as said in the readme), when I restart - just a black screen with my power light left green...annoyance

Mine? Mine isnt bricked, His files just made The Downgrade not quite What i was expecting, it says its 3.0, Updating is disabled. Cant run any games. cant run any updater from a UMD. So pretty much its Scrwed

No your fine download x-flash and choose a setting to revert all mods.

followed the instructions flawlessly.
red screen then zap after about 5-seconds. LOL
serves me right for taking a gamble waay too
early in the game. now i have 2 options in front of me. i'll choose one tomorrow. ;)

i dont know what the f_#* i did wrong but my psp wont turn on. iguess this is what they mean by bricked. got the red screen then crashed and the end of my psp.

I think sony have got something big on their hands now every psp except 2.8 is able to get on 1.5 :) they better release that emu and a new update + now the downgrader is done the people doing the ps1 emu can concentrate on that :)

EDIT: this downgrader means people can play homebrew on those limited edition PSPs since theyll probably come with 2.71 that white PSP with the black designs looked awesome.

lol.. read that and as far i understand.. all i have to do is make a folder in my MSROOT called DOWNDATER and place the 2 folders *flash0* and *flash1* in it.. and then also place the tiff image into my photo folder..

is this right?

also even though i read it.. the english does seem a lil sketchy... so id rather not make any mistakes and well u know.. brick..

after you extract the file there is goin to be a folder called MS_ROOT go into the folder then "select all" the just drag that over to the root file of your psp replace anything it asks then go normaly like you are going to open a picture and your psp will freeze or goto the red screen if it goes to the red screen just wait if it just freezes manually restart and try agian continue that till it works.

Okay I_hate_firmware in all honesty I do not think they can make a downgrader for 2.80 as Kernel mode is not accessible in fw 2.80. An ELoader however, is a highly likely option and will allow you to access some of the fine homebr3w without the need to downgrade. Hopefully Fanjita will be quick with his new ELoader.. he wouldn't want to be outdone by Dark_AleX now would he?

Hi all....

Ok guys....mines bricked..

Heres what i did...

Checked inside UMD slot for TA-082 - no writing.

1) Used a newly pre-formatted 2GB Sony mem stick
2) downloaded the downdater271.all.rar from PSPhacks
3) copied MS Root to root directory of PSP (which only had two files anyway - new mem stick!)
This creates MS Root and the other directories (like Photo) in the pack.
4). Looked at photo, PSP went red....
5). ...then black.
Machine dead.

My battery power was at 58-60% and i DID leave the USB connected after copying the files....
Power lead was also connected.

Now machine will light green for about 10 secs, the light does out. Screen remains black throughout.
