Anyone who has been a gamer for many years will have played a beat em up game, but what do the DCEmu Members rate as the very best beat em up ever ?

To answer my own question i would have to say that theirs so many and if you count wrestling games as beat em ups then id say WWF Smackdown on the PS1,

Whats your Favourite Beatem Up Ever?

I think we need to differentiate between Beat 'Em Ups and Fighting games.

There was one TMNT Beat 'Em Up that I liked, I think it was the third one. But for creativity sake, I'll go with Battletoads.

Well, beat'em ups are scrolling fighting games, and not versus fighting games.

Anyway :D

Side-scroll: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time for SNES

KILLER INSTINCT (snes ver) is my favorite of all time but I've always loved Virtua fighter II on Saturn as well. Never thought much of Tekken, just a button basher in my book (nice graphics tho).

For the side scrolling beat em up it has to be streets of rage 2, then final fight 1, the cps1 version that is.I cant forget golden axe either.

Then for 2d 1 on 1 beat em ups it has to be the street fighter series, as they are the main blue prints for all 1 on 1 beat em ups.king of fighters 2000 rocks also.

Finaly for the 3d beatem ups i would have to say soul caliber 2 on game cube.although I do love tekken.I never really got into the virtua fighter games unfortunatly.

If I had to decide out of one I would have to go for
street fighter 2 turbo, mainly because of its superb balance and flawless gameplay. The game has also has also aged like a fine wine, proof of this is its countless re releases on capcom classics and the most reasent xbox live arcade debuet.

shame there is major lag on the live mode of the classic game:(

street fighter will never die.

street fighter 4................?

come on Capcom you know you want to.:)

Airdevil-I dont hate you Tekken 5 owns! One of the most realistics fighting games to date.
Bah-Good Friggin Choice!

Some of you had some really good games, others with your Smash Bros Melee are you serious? Do you play that by yourselves? You can't play that game by yourself (after you get all the characters at least) it was ONLY good for multiplayer.

My favorite sidescroller would have to be either
Double Dragon (NES) or Final Fight (NES)

and round one fight game
Killer Instinct (SNES) or Mortal Kombat II (Snes)

repuken2
September 4th, 2006, 00:09
Street Fighter 2 Champion Editio for being what it was, The King of Fighters '98 is technically the most complete beat em up of all times.

Final Fight is the best side scroller.

It was already posted but I have to concur that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is one of the greatest and most fun side-scrolling beat 'em ups ever.

This game was for the SNES.

Another favorite is BATTLETOADS.

Tekken 5 the most realistic fighting game to date? What reality do you live in?? I'd give that probably to Virtua Fighter 4 Evo if anything.

Side scroller: Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Arcade (not in time) or Double Dragon II

2D Fighting: Street Fighter II orginal arcade

3D Fighting: Tough one here... either Tekken 2, VF4 Evo or Soul Calibur on DC. Pumped the most amount of money into Tekken 1 though...

YourStillWithMe
September 4th, 2006, 01:05
PlayingKarrde-The CHARACTERS are not accurate at all and some of them are ridiculous but there fighting styles are quite accurate and all the throws and kick moves done by Hwoarang, Jin, Steve, are quite learnable. I'm 18 (Almost 19) and I know 5 people that take Tae-Kwon Do and I'm self taught. My father did Akido in college and my friends father took Judo. Jeet Kun Do, Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo Akido, Kapuaro, (Fighting style based on dance) Karate, (not 5 year old defend yourself from bullies Karate/karate kid Karate) I've studied them and as I said earlier the characters, how they keep coming back to life, the electricity coming out of there arms, and the animals and robots etc. etc. are stupid and inaccurate but the fighting styles ARE real. Ex you may get-You ever see the movie Enter The Dragon or any of the other the Bruce Lee movies? Well Bruce Lee the character learned traditonal Chinese Karate and that's what "Law" in Tekken uses. He is meant to represent Bruce Lee. Play for yourself and find out.

Veskgar
September 4th, 2006, 01:15
Yes I think Tekken 5 & Tekken Dark Resurrection are the best FIGHTING games. I don't consider them beat em ups. Beat Em Ups is a more accurate description for games like Final Fight, Double Dragon, etc.

The only bareable simpsons game untill hit n run.

I'm glad this game was mentioned. Between that and Turtles in Time, the arcade was a great place to be. Also, who can forget Double Dragon. Did parents even realize their kids were playing a gangfighting game?

One more for the list, although I'm not sure if shooting counts - Sunset Riders.

yes.

Since that's already been mentioned, I'll throw in Warriors of Fate. A CPS classic.

Also, you people need to learn the difference between beat-um-ups and fighting games. SSBM is NOT a beat-um-up, it's a fighting game.

i assume you mean not vs fighters because those are some of the answers people are giving. In terms of beat'em ups, Double Dragon hands down. The genre wouldn't have even existed if it wasn't for that great series. True there were beat'em ups before but none had the impact that Double Dragon had. Every developer soon after were scrambling to come out with something to try to match the financial success Double Dragon had.

There's too many to choose from.

From the Street Fighter series I'd have to go for Alpha 2 for it's insane combos (SF vs XMEN comes close) while remaining balanced.

Side scrolling Final Fight (CPS)

3D fighter has to be Soul Caliber (DC)

Lastly a big up to IK+ (Amiga) let's not forget it

Eyedunno
September 4th, 2006, 09:12
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 2 (CPS-2). Easily the best game in the Street Fighter series, as far as I'm concerned.

I played Street Fighter II for the SNES to the point where if I lost even one round on the highest difficulty, I'd reset the game, but Street Fighter Alpha 2 easily blew away even that great game. The amount of control you can exercise over characters like Sakura (best Ryu clone ever - being able to aim punches and kicks and delay fireballs is so awesome) and Rolento really makes the game.

Unfortunately, I hated the music and level backgrounds in Alpha 3, and the gameplay also got really convoluted by that point, so I'm not as big of a fan, though I own the Japanese version of it for GBA and unlocked almost everything (beating Shin-Gouki on survival mode was too hard and frustrating though, so I gave up :/ ). The Alpha 3 version of Vega/M. Bison (the dictator - not the boxer or the bullfighter) was completely awesome though.

like previously stated, when I think "Beat em up" I dont think your vs fighting games like SF2, KOF, etc. A couple of you that are hooked on the xbox and are limited to these fighting games, which are in my opinion at least of a different genre need to take a look at some of these gems

Ninja/ Hero Turtles 4: Turtles in Time - *SNES and MAME
Battle Toads series *NES, GB, *SNES
Double Dragon series NES and SNES
Batman Returns SNES
SpiderMan: Maximum Carnage SNES
XMEN SNES and MAME?

Regarding the definition of "beat 'em up," it appears Wikipedia uses the term only to refer to scrolling fighters. But I remember an old gaming magazine that used it for all fighting games (I haven't picked up a gaming magazine since about 1994 or 1995, so I'm perhaps a little behind the times).

Anyway, going by Wikipedia's definition, I suppose I'd spring for the original CPS-1 Final Fight. Street Fighter Alpha 2 still rules though, and I was surprised to see someone else had the same idea I did at the same time I did.

"Fighters" is a completely diferent genre to me, since it mainly involves 2 player VS. battling...thus is the reason I haven't mentioned any on this list, but my favorite Fighters are:

- Tekken (any game)
- Marvel VS. Capcom 1 & 2
- Street Fighter II & Alpha (any game)
- Street Fighter III-Fight for the Future
- Mortal Kombat II
- Smash Bros. (any game)
- SoulCalibur II (GC...Gotta have Link!)
