A Microsoft Worker posted this bit of tech news about loading times:

Ozymandias has found out that the PS3 will use a 2x BD drive, which is 72Mbits/second or 9MB/second. The Xbox360 uses a 12x DVD, which should give it about 16MB/second. “That is significantly faster for games and will result in shorter load times.”

Negative press from a MS shill, not surprising.

From a slashdotter who knows a quite a bit about blu-ray drives:

A 12x CAV drive like the one in the 360 will be 12x speed for around 15% of the outer disc, that figure is peak performance. The closer to the inner ring it gets the slower accesses get (5x speed on the inner ring) - probable average: around 8x speed. Another interesting thing seems to escape everyone is that the 12x DVD drive in the 360 only reads dual layer discs at a maximum of 8x speed. As it was in single layer, the 8x speed is peak performance. The 2x speed BD drive performs quite well in this case: a BD25 on PS3 fares better than a DVD9 on the 360. The great majority of 360 games are and will be pressed on DVD9s. Another interesting point with existing CLV BD drives is that they do not have the dual layer penalization with DVD dics. If a BD drive is rated to read DVDs at 8x, it will read dual layer DVDs at 8x as well. This is why Sony is comfortable with its choice and knows it will hold its own against MS's choice in the DVD format.

You can see Ozymandias neglecting facts about 12 speed DVD drives in general. 16MB/second is a maximum throughput on a small part of the outer ring. That throughput you can get only on single layer discs as well. Most 360 games are dual layer, so max speed is 8x, again for a very small portion of the disc.

The growing competition between the 360, the PS3 and to a lesser degree the Wii can only be good for us, the consumer.

There may not be a clear winner, but it might mean that within a year or two, most folks will be able to afford all next-gen formats and pic the best titles for each.

actually its pretty well known that to simply skipping a track on a Blue Ray disk can take up to a min.. Given its enourmouse size this shouldnt be suprising. Whoever can find me a link verifying these details gets a cyber cookie btw.. It might have been on slashdot

Did everyone forget Sony's E3 Presentation? Did you see the load times on the games - mainly Gran Turismo? There were very little loading times do to optimizations made with the game + HD

Wa ka ka ka.. I must say I'm entertained with every SSaxdude saying about PS3 and Sony.. As if a Walkman was dropped at his head when he's a baby and somewhat the word Sony traumatized him :D Joke man, peace.. I just can't understand why people can be so hatred toward a manufacturing company..

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and the right to express it arent they?...to an extent of course!

The whole point of a forum is to express views!

I think at the mo the ps3 is going to be RELATIVELY slow compared to the 360 basically cos of the disc and how long it will take to read. Altho i do think sony will find someway of upgrading it in the future...if thats possible once it has been released??
