New Scientist says the Microsoft touchscreen produces a real texture using pixel-sized shape-memory plastic cells that can protrude from the surface.
The report says this tech has been attempted before by firms like Senseg in Finland, but that some of the frequencies are in the audio range, so a buzz can be heard.
Microsoft proposes using a layer of plastic placed above the touchscreen to distort the surface when different wavelengths of ultraviolet light strike the pixels from beneath.
Initially this would be for table-sized computing displays rather than phones or tablets.
