Microsoft has responded to yesterday's news on the delay to the PS3 in a press statement issued this afternoon and as we're sure you'll appreciate, the Redmond giant has nothing but the milk of human sympathy (yeah we know it's kindness normally, but bear with us) over the Japanese giant's launch problems.

The MS statement begins by addressing the problems of a tri-territory launch, saying "We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan." Read between those lines however and you can probably hear the faint echo of a "yup, but somehow we managed it'.

However MS save the delicate stiletto for the end of that first paragraph which reads, "...due to the unproven technology they [Sony] are trying to pack in to their console."

Ouch that's gotta smart more than a little. Still MS continue in confident tone given they've now got a clear path in Europe this Christmas adding, "Europe remains a priority for us and that is why gamers have been able to experience Xbox 360 from day one and why we're confident we're going to have a great Christmas, regardless of what competitors are or are not in the market."

"Xbox 360 will have over 160 high-definition games including Viva Pinata from Rare, Gears of War from Epic, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 from Konami and FIFA 2007 from EA, a growing and innovating online gaming service, fantastic entertainment capabilities, optional HD-DVD capability and a great-value price. These factors will help us reach our goal of 10 million consoles sold worldwide by the end of the year.

Rumours that Bill Gates, Peter Moore and J Allard are currently doing a breaststroke marathon in a swimming pool full of recently-acquired Blue Ray diodes are believed to be unfounded.
