View Full Version : gpSP 0.7 (GameplaySP V0.7) - Full Speed GBA Emu for PSP

Pages : [1] 2

Mr. Shizzy

Exophase (http://bitpack.net/exo/) has released 2 new versions of his excellent GBA Emulator for the PSP, heres the release info from the readme file:

v0.7 - (beta than ever)

# Fixed a dynarec bug involving flags generating functions in
contiguous conditional blocks. Fixes music in Super Mario
Advance 2-4.
# Fixed a dynarec bug where Thumb mov imm instructions wouldn't
set flags. Fixes Zelda: Minish Cap, Megaman Battle Network,
probably others. Comes at a slight speed cost.
# Fixed a MIPS dynarec bug where some delay slots might not
get filled rarely, causing chaos. Don't know if it improves
any games.
# Improved self-modifying code detection. Makes Golden Sun,
Golden Sun 2, and Madden 2007 sorta work but excrutiatingly
slowly. Looking for a game-specific workaround for this - if you
want to play these games you'll have to wait for now :(
# Fixed a bug causing the interrupt disable flag to go down
when SWIs are entered, causing crashes/resets. Fixes
Super Mario Advance 2-4.
# Fixed menu crashing when strings with certain characters are
printed (for instance going to the menu after loading the
BIOS)
# Accidentally forgot to render win0 + win1 + objwin when all
active at the same time, many weeks ago. Added that, should fix
some parts in games that had frozen screens.
# Fixed some issues with gpsp.cfg needing to be present and
corrupting, hopefully. At the very least sanity checks are
performed on the config file.
# Made it so assigning the frameskip button to something besides
triangle actually worked as expected.
# Fixed ability to restart current game if nothing is loaded
(ie, crash)
# Added interrupt on cpsr modification support to the dynarec
(fixes backgrounds in Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance)
# Added open addressing for ldm/stm instructions (fixes
Super Mario Advance 3)
# Improved cycle accuracy a little. Don't know of anything this
fixes, but games with idle loops will run a little better w/o
idle loop elimination (but should still be added when possible)
# Fixed some bugs causing sound to play sometimes when it shouldn't.
@ Added dead flag elimination for Thumb code. May possibly have
noticeable performance increases (Thumb emited coded size can
have a reduction of 20% or more)
@ Added code generation for divide SWI. May have a small speed
increase in some games.
+ Added analog nub support (special thanks to psp298 for the
code)
+ Added fractional frameskip. Go below 0 to get them. A frameskip
of 1/2 for instance means render 2 out of every 3 frames, 2/3
means render 3 out of every 4 frames, etc. Possibly useful for
games that are not quite fast enough at fs0 but fullspeed at
fs1...

One version is faster and the other more compatible, choose which one works for you.

well there is two versions...one is speedy but still has compatibility problems and one has better compatibility but is a bit slower(this one he calls the "alt" version), analog stick was added, save states hasn't been added yet so it still saves the same i guess

This is a fantastic emulator, the one GBA game I really care about - Mario Vs DK runs close to perfect, very playable, saves works great.

Thanks Exophase :)

OH MY GOODNESS! I hope I'm not dreaming, LOL...

This is a tremendous update. There is a highly noticeable improvement in compatibility, speed, & sound. Among many other goodies. Analog support is a godsend. The "Zelda" bug is fixed.

And for almost an hour now I've been playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The game now plays like a dream. I got past the beginning BOOK part where it froze on last release, created a CLAN name, went on a couple of missions, SAVED the game with no problems, etc. etc.

This is incredible! PERFECT GBA emulation on the PSP. Or if not perfect, 98% perfect. Some games might need frameskip 1 but frameskip that low is not even noticeable and the games play oh so smooth.

I think this is the BEST EMU for the PSP. And its only in BETA????

THANK YOU Exophase! If you are accepting donations, this is worth donating to. The fact that you kept this under wraps for 3 months while you kept at it and in just 2 or 3 weeks of public releases we are at this point shows how dedicated you are to this.

This is truly a gift and a blessing to the PSP homebrew community.

if you wanna find out what one is better why not put both on your psp, just rename one (like put the alt version in a gpspalt folder) and edit one of the eboots so you can tell the difference
Congratz on the emu, ill probably play my psp a lot more now(when compaired to comercial psp games alone), never mind 2.8 users, an eloader is surely on its way to you

My bad. I was up for two days straight, and was testing so many roms, I didn't even get to the Bowser freeze up. My bad. Oh btw, I'm using the "speed version", not the alt version. Has anyone tested both? If so, which would you say is better?

Wow! Amazing. Now i don't need my real GBA anymore. Everything on 1 console! Continue this great work!

But there is one thing: Motoracer Advance does not work properly - the menu where i select single player , multiplayer and options is broken in the game.

What's the scoop with the gpsp.cfg file? Is this needed anymore? Not with current release.

jinqui242
September 10th, 2006, 20:36
I deleted the old cfg file and 0.7 created a new one when I played it. I think the gpsp.cfg might store your control settings, but I don't see anything when I open it up in a text editor. The emulator does remember control settings in this version, though.

Does anyone have a 1.0 eboot of 0.7 (official version) with the pearl GBA SP icon? I can't seem to find it. Or just direct me towards the PNG file. Someone posted it with 0.6, but that's buried somewhere in the forums.

ok the games i tested

dragon ball adventure-perfect (at rare some parts..graphics glitches but not that annoying)

bust-a-move- perfect (nothing wrong so far)

mario kart-perfect (nothing wrong...haven't played a long time though)

wario ware inc-perfect

mario tennis-crashes(think can't emulate 16mb+ isn't it??)

puyo puyo-perfect

sonic advance-perfect

super mario advance 2-perfect

hmm i think that's all the games i tested so far... really nice emu...the best emu...i think it's even better than snesTYL in terms of speed and sound....the framerate is very very good... the games run very smoothly!!!!

You mean 16 kB? Yes, it is. I've tried using two different images. Neither works. This is using the normal version of gpSP. Maybe I should try the alternate version as well?

I can try checking the MD5 checksum to see if it corresponds to the readme. Anyone know which program can do this?
Thanks for all help! :)

EDIT: I just tried running a Dragon Ball ROM, and it worked! Well, it loaded the game, showed three screens developer images and came with a "jump error" and quit to XMB. So it's probably not the BIOS.

EDIT 2: Just tried Golden Sun and it works perfectly! So Blazed247 was right. The Pokemon ROMs hate me.
Thanks to both of you for helping me!:D

Very impressive again!

This really is turning out to be the best emulator on the PSP without a doubt, i'd say at the stage it's at now, it's better than any snes emu.

Have been playing Warioware. Awsome. The 1st time I played it it didn't auto save but the 2nd time it did. There's some weird, not normal sfx whenever you finish any boss too. Nothing major :)

Im sorry didn't let the community know about gpsp.cfg getting corrupted cause in .06 if i saved in game, some times gpsp.cfg got corrupted and i had to replace the original gpsp.cfg if i didn't every single game would give me the blue screen saying the psp crashed (this is what saves when u save in the og game) but it seems the Author, Thanx im drunk but it seems he relized on his own or through testers, that gpsp.cfg gets corrupted

One thing I notice is that VBA on the PC won't recognize .SAV files created from gpSP. If you create one on VBA, then gpSP says the save file is corrupted. I hope this will be remedied in future releases. I'd like to input Gameshark/Codebreaker codes. Or if we could put cheats in directly on gpSP in the future, we could bypass using VBA altogether.

Edit - Certain saves seem to work on both VBA and gpSP, like Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (64KB). One that doesn't work is Zelda: Minish Cap, which 8KB on PC and 32KB on Memory Stick. I wonder if the size change when you copy it to MS has anything to do with it.

EDIT 2: Just tried Golden Sun and it works perfectly! So Blazed247 was right. The Pokemon ROMs hate me.
Thanks to both of you for helping me!:D
blazed was not right, nothing is wrong with your roms, what you have to do is load the game, enter the menu, change flash rom type from 64kb to 128kb, then restart currently running game, if thisdoesntwork then it is the roms that are bad.

I'm sorry :( I didn't think there were people who had this kind of particular problem. If you have the source code and can build it I can direct you on how to take it out, if not I might be persuaded to make a custom build for you.

As for it being a feature.. well, if you can't even scroll to it in the first place.. :P Although having nub support in the GUI is probably not necessary.

I could add nub configuration to the pad config maybe instead..

What do you think?

Well first of all exophase I think this is a wonderful emu and I have been waiting for a prog like this since shortly after I bought my psp. I have a 1.5 and mainly use it for movies and music since most games are ruined by the analog stick which moves things like race cars and such to the edge of the screen. Its my fault having dropped my psp but i cant afford to buy another right now (one that can be downgraded. If I put pressure on the psp I can get to the configure gamepad in your menu but i didnt see a disable analog stick, sigh. Something like that that will work for all menus and games would be wonderful for me and others like me, and I know that there are others in the same situation. Thank you for any help you could give in this matter.
I would just like to be able to play your emu(especially minish cap) .
thanks again man

I very much appreciate the analog support but the fact that you are willing to make a custom build for just 1 user after all you've done shows great generosity.

I just want to take this time to let you know how much I appreciate this Emulator. It is the BEST EMU for the PSP in my opinion and shows very much how talented you are.

You have literally made quality of life better for thousands or perhaps tens of thousands of PSP owners.

I plan on donating to this project in the near future and hope many others continue to support you and this great PSP.

I tested some ROMs, and it was AMAZING

Totally Spies! (Yup, a game of this TV show does exist :D) - The animation runs perfectly (it wasn't on 0.6), there are still some problems of transparency, and the game is *sometimes* a bit slow.

Scrabble - No problem encountered.

Monopoly - No problem encountered.

Advance Wars [v1.1 dumped] - It ran slow on v0.6 but works much better on v0.7. However, displaying a text is sooooooo slow.

Final Fantasy 4 - Runs OK. But the yellow sky makes gpSP slow.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - Runs very well. Intro is as dreadful and boring as the real cartridge.

(I mean that all these ROMS are European. Yup, the same region where a Joe Schmoe idiot will forget to distribute PS3. :D)

Homebrews from www.foxysofts.com

Deflektor, Nebulus run very well.
Another World does NOT work. Bad jump, goto xmb.

Great job for WarioWare Inc, and for the emu overall! On v0.6, I used a frameskip of 4. On v0.7, it's only 2, and some games work much better (The mini-game from F-Zero is the best example).

virtua tennis-crashes :(

tekken advance-runs great on 2fps(forgot how good this game was)
advance wars 2-perfect(haven't tested much though)
crash bandicoot xs-runs great(sound a bit choppy at times but not very annoying)
street fighter alpha 3-works fine

i think that's all the games i tested

Works fine with the roms/save files in a seperate folder within /gpsp.

I now have no need for a new dosbox version, wolfenstein runs perfectly and is the proper version unline the snes one. :)

Sonic advance ran great, crashed while fighting the third (bouncy) boss unfortunately ( I'll try the alt version). The way it ran up untill that point was near flawless though, extremely impressive.

For people with Castlevania save problems, I had one instance in HoD where I saved the game but it wouldn't recognise my save afterwards. I noticed that very rarely when you save a game, your memory card indicator will not flash...your game is not really being saved. Shut down and start it again.

Well I'm using the US rom as there appears to be more compatibility with the US versions.

Does the rom work in a PC emu, like VBA?

As long as it's a good rom it should work.

Other info is that I use the GTA loader to run the program. Firmware 2.00. But I don't think it really matters what firmware you are. If some roms work, they should all work the same as long as they are good roms.

Google results differ depending on your location, but try 'gameboy advance bios gba_bios.zip' (without quotes) look for a lastend.com link.

Rename the gba.bios file inside the zip to gba_bios.bin and place it in your /gpsp dir.

Your technically spamming... but I know what you mean. The same thing happens all the time on here, people keep reviving really old (and dead) threads (eg: all on NJ’s emulators, mame, plus the N64 emu etc).

It must get very confusing for any noobz on this site.

My fault then.

Updates always means improvement and if this newest version was drowning while the old version was up then many people would get confused. This site doesn't close old threads of old versions. I can still found many people checked old releases.

The front page menu bar makes it pretty easy for newcomers, gpSP's link still points to 0.6 so its still getting the hits, once wraggster gets that updated all shal be well.

I think having a link in each new release's post to the previous version would help though, so people can easily find answers to already resolved issues without needing to ask the same few questions over again.

In Zelda Minish Cap, the emulator crashes every time I try to fight the final boss in the Temple of Droplets.

If an error code is needed, I can get it.

I'm using the 1.5 Alternate version, btw.

( this question isnt meant to be mean in any way. i really dont know how much work this means. oh dear! i hope that wraggster isnt angry at me now. :( )

I wonder when, or if Exophase is going to add 32 mega bite rom support. That would be a great feature, even if it was experimental to see if we could load things like game boy advanced videos. Or other games that were higher than 16 mega bites, such as Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.

Actually that would be a bad idea because, that would use more of the PSP's memory. The reason for this is because the game boy advanced allowing it to play game boy/color games, used a whole different piece of hardware inside the system. Basically if you want game boy/color compatability in the game boy advanced emulator, you have to emulate that seperate hardware also. Which is not only a pain in the balls. Its memory consuming for the small 32 mega bites of ram the PSP has. So its best if a feature like that was not inserted. And just stick with RIN for game boy/color since that runs full speed anyway =S

Great Emu, but it doesn't seem to work with the new eloader 0.98 and 2.6 firmware, after you select it in the eloader menu, it just stops and then after about 20 seconds closes the psp down.
shame, but im not complaining, both this emu and the boot loader are amazing tools and both have my respect!! :)

1) 32MB is not "small". a GBC emulator can easily run inside 2MB of RAM... Moreover, that's still not valid even if it needed 30MB to run--it wouldn't be using all of the needed memory for GBC + GBA since it wouldn't be running both AT THE SAME TIME.

2) It's "bytes", not "bites" :p ("bites" you to know that, huh? hahaha :p)

And just stick with RIN for game boy/color since that runs full speed anyway =S
Now THAT is a good enough point. :D

It seems the other guy's idea is just "let's get the author to incorporate GBC and then it will run at lightspeed!!!1111"...

Well I just remember someone telling me, that implementing gb/color would be memory consuming to the PSP. And it would not be worth running along side with GBA, as GBA is very memory consuming, and its important the gba is using everything the PSP has to run.

Also ya RIN is great, I just wish link cable emulation was implemented.

And ya Tinnus, sorry about the bites = bytes thing =P

That's the point--it wouldn't be running ALONGSIDE. GBC doesn't need any of the GBA hardware to be running at the same time. Of course the program would be bigger, but most of the memory used by the GBA emulator is probably allocated at run-time--and thus wouldn't be allocated when running GBC (and vice versa).

I noticed that, but that problem only occurs should you try to start the emu though the photo. I use GTA (still) on 2.6, load it, and everything works fine. Minnish Cap and Pokemon are testament to this.

On another note, thanks for the ridiculously good emu Exophase. If savestates and action reply codes are possible then I wish you luck implementing them. Kudos to you.
