View Full Version : Whats the Best FPS Ever?

wraggster
September 10th, 2006, 21:27
Heres another of those questions to get the community talking and one im sure you all have an opinion on.

So onto the question, what is the best FPS game ever across all formats?

answering the question myself i would have to say Duke Nukem 3D comes very high on my list but my fave at the moment are the Conflict Global Storm games.

Whats your fave FPS Game ?

Whats the best fps ever is what I think you ment, my favourite first person shooter has to be golden eye 007 for nintendo 64 :)

ya mine would have to be perfect dark for n64. selling my n64 was one bad decision.

I really liked Duke Nukem3D as well. I can't forget dialing up to my friend for a deathmatch. I also enjoyed Heretic and Rise of the Triad. After that though, I pretty much got totally burned out of those types of games. Too bad 90% of the games being released are fps/war :(

I'll throw my opinion in. Didnt like halo 2 at all, halo 1 is one of the best though... but i compartmentalize, there are different FPS
Best Fastpaced: Quake 3 Arena
Best Slowpaced: CS 1.6 (1.6 owns Source's soul)
Console : Yeah, Goldeneye by far (I didnt even own an n64 and think that)
My personal favorite overall: Doom 1

Half-life comes extremely high on my list, all of them, but...

But if I was stuck on an island with only one game, it'd be DOOM. No questions, no doubts, there's nothing that's taken up more of my time, and I've thoroughly and still thoroughly enjoy so much :D

"I've got to go with Goldeneye. perfect dark though in many ways an improvement on goldeneye lost it for me. Goldeneye was a one off to this day nothings really managed to capture it again."

damn straight man! You hit it right on the money!!!

Counter Strike, Doom, (Although Doom was great for its time) Half Life 1 + 2, Halo 1 + 2, Call Of Duties, etc. all did not capture the experience that Goldeneye and Perfect Dark brought to the table!

Perfect Dark was insane for it's time. Over 30 weapons, sick training scenarios with each gun, up to 12 people in multiplayer, (including bots) bots with personalities and goals, secondary fire for all weapons, LEVELS FROM GOLDENEYE, (The Only Good Ones Too. . .) sick story in single player, tons of unlockables, ability to connect your gameboy color perfect dark to the n64 for cheats, high replay value and just a huge smack in the face for its time. It was also one of the first games to introduce the expansion pack on the N64. I give a high amount of respect to Goldeneye due to the fact that its made by the same company but i think Goldeneye is gutter trash compared to perfect dark. All of the stupid games of today will never compare to the fun, memories, amount of blood splatter, (for its time!) replay value and pure entertainment that Perfect Dark brought to the table. If you have never played Perfect Dark, you ARE missing out.

duke nukem 3d or unreal (the first one) for me
unreal was just amazing at the time it was released I think it made the original quake look like crap.. and the enemies would roll between cover to get close to you.

duke nukem 3d I loved the deathmatch modes and how easily the scripts were to modify I had scripts that would make you leave a trail of blood at 50% health and loose life after 10% made it where you'd crap on the floor when hit and had garbage cans spew random bits of gore into the air like a fountain.

Duke Nukem 3D and Jedi Knight 1 would be my favorites (I still play both!!!).

But, EA invented Medal of Honor and (guided by the hands of God) Battlefield 1942 (and the whole new amazing concepts for FPS... with wide open battlefields, all kind of vehicles, etc...).

So, for me, I think it is:
BF1942
Medal of Honor (the whole series)
Jedi Knight 1
Duke Nukem 3D

Unreal Tournament, right? No, he said Unreal. As in, the game called Unreal. Not Unreal Tournament.

Classically, I loved Unreal Tournament. For years, I played that game but didn't even try playing online (because my internet was too slow, mainly). I loved the bots. Half-Life was really good, too, but mainly just the mods for it. The single player was pretty boring.
Today, my favorite FPS in a non-classical term would have to be Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. I've gotten so much multiplayer gameplay out of that game, and I've spent hours and hours making a huge single player mod for it so there's teammates. That game rocks to this day.

Yer, it was the only FPS where you were able to dive throught he air in slow-motion, disarm your enemy, shoot them down with their own gun, THEN land and slide while targetting someone else, only to roll onto your back and take them out too, with a few nicely placed lead ones... Thing of beauty!

DooM still has it though. 3 player Coaxial deathmatch... drool...

Wow, how many have you guys fail to realize that perfect dark is golden remade with a real plotline, more guns, and bots? Goldeneye was great, but when perfect dark came out, goldeneye was no longer the best.

You've got to be kidding me. The metroid prime is horrible and plays absolutely nothing like any of the older ones, and is therefore not really a metroid game in my opinion.

well i know im going to get smack around for saying this but Halo 1 and only 1 when it first came out had the best times in any video game to date multiplayer lan parties through xbconnect with my cousins against alot of people before xbox live started and talking about single player best AI when it first came out was very fun to play many times but what made it hot was the co op mode good times good times and yes i play unreal tournament and half life but i was always alone with those games and just playing online wasnt the same as halo on xbconnect so yea the original game only.

well i say when you say halo is not great and then bring up half life its just fanboy talk all over you can never say something is fanboy and the other is not it just wont happen like i said i found more enjoyment in Halo 1 than Halo 2 many times and im talking about before it got destroyed with all the lil rugrats who cheat for ranks. simply was that it was noobified just for the kiddies to have fun online but halo 1 was harder and enjoyable when you get the hang of it.

Marathon 1, 2, Infinity - the Doom killers, surprised not a single person mentioned it yet. Better story, dual weapons, the Halo of 1995, plus it is also now open source (can't believe no one has messed with this more on port overs to different systems).

Unreal Championship 2 - melee, guns, fatalities (thanks to MK, Raiden in a fps, sweet), and crazy multiplayer. Too bad bombing run didn't make it into the game, that was possibly the best part of the first one, plus, it looks great.

Duke Nukem 3d - "I don't have time to play with myself", this game was a step further into our modern fps's. It also had some cool items: the jetpack, the HoloDuke, the devestator, the freeze cannon. Multiplayer was crazy too.

I'd have to say Halo 2. I still play it just as much now as when it came out years ago. Has the most replay value of ANY fps I've ever played.

Half-life 2 is also awesome, and has the best modding community so there's always something new to try (G-Mod will live forever on my HDD), but in regards to its singleplayer: it's great, but there's no real incentive to play through it again.

Oh, and the most fun I've ever had from a game is co-op on Halo 2. Any PC gamer out there who doesn't have an xbox, get it next year on PC. Play it and love it.

Unreal Tournament (The Original). No contest, this game is still awesome at lan parties. :)

Honorable mention (Not in any order):

Half Life 1 & 2: Single player was awesome, physics were amazing, and who can forget the gravity gun?
All the Dooms: Gotta love the classics and I loved 3. Counterstrike Source: Deagles rule, and so do zombies. :D
Goldeneye: So many weapons, this game was amazing when it first came out on the N64.
Metroid Prime: Great single player, last 2 bossfights were very memorable.
UT2004: Not really a big fan of it, but it is really cool if you mod the hell out of it.

Doom1/2 then Quake 2. All of which kicked royal arse in death match.

Quake2 is one of the only FPS's that I want to go back to to play online, but it appears that no one plays it any more. :(

Doom started it all for me, Halo revolutionized the console FPS play ... but I would have to say ... (Drum Role)

Goldeneye for Nintendo 64, just from the sheer number of hours played with 4 players on a 13 inch TV screen LOL!!!

For me it's between

Quake - Awesome on 1 player, got a lot of hours in on this back when my PC couldn't handle anything more than this.

Unreal Tournament - We play this at work on the network at lunchtime, great fun.

Goldeneye - Awesome single or multiplayer, must have spent days playing this.

quake 2 and all flavours of counter-strike.

it might have something to do with the railgun / awp

quake 2 was the first fps i played over the internet and i kicked a$$ with my 28.8kbps modem :D
the singleplayer-mode is just as fun and it's even funnier in co-op!

cs, need i say more? played since the first betas and was actually refusing to play it because of the halflife-engine (i really don't like half-life, am i the only one?) but then some of my mates invited me over for a lan and i couldn't stop

I know I should say Tron 2.0, but far and away Half Life 2 is the best FPS I have played so far.

Monolith's Blood for sure. Tonnes more gore and better humour than Duke Nukem 3D. I think anyone who has played both games will agree :)

Unreal Tournament hands down. At the time Ground breaking graphics. supreme gameplay and it was origionally released on the PC rather than on a console and crappy ports brought over to the pc

Recent Top 3

1. Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 with its immensively smart source engine design has to come first because it's business smart, and just really fuggin fun to play. The game makers definately knew what they were doing when designing the original gameplay. Valve used smarter code design and more tricks to make the game visually entertaining yet not too memory consuming at the same time while still following a deadly interesting story-line and changing the gameplay to use your puzzle solving skills and driving different vechiles which was the icing of this cake. The physics are also immensively well done in this game. The ability to pick up a trash can to dodge bullets or pulling a chair in front of the door to stop people from coming in is just simply, awsome. Even though there are more graphically superior games out as we speak, in the fun and affordable hardware department HL2 is undisputed.

2. Oblivion

Oblivion is very fun to play and is graphically a grand feast for the eyes, it has a strong story line and a powerful cast of characters but its little downs/cons brings this peticular game to number 2 on the top 3 list. It's a massive memory hog is the first thing the game makers could have done away with. The pictures which are loaded into the memory are seldomly appreciated in the pixels they are loaded. The game takes up around 600 - 700 MB of space in the memory and doesn't really visually deliver what it uses. The distance view is choppy and could have been rethought, some quests contain gameplay halting bugs (dark gift quest), water is very unreal along with its interaction, and there are no new places to discover to see new creatures for creatures evolve with the player. Although this game has some eye piecing cons, its pros are cannot go unnoticed. It's a generally LOVELY piece by its authors and Patrick Steward being the voice of the emperor definately gives it another plus from me ;) Definately a recommended game.

3. F.E.A.R.

Here we have the action FPS of the movie Ring. The game developpers managed to give this game 2 things which take this game higher up on the list than all other games released; Extremely-Advanced A.I. and Superbly Realistic Graphics along with its scares. This game actually has soldiers which set up traps for you, and call for help from each other. It's indeed a very fun A.I. to fight against but that was also the letdown of the gameplay for that peticular A.I. is ALL YOU GET TO FIGHT almost 90% of the game. The clone soldiers, and the FBI lookin agent folks all operate on the same A.I. which takes out that different taste factor out of the game. Everybody likes ice-cream, but people sometimes want a bite of chocolate aswell as good as ice-cream maybe. However the game still manages to keep you focused on the story for it's very deep and interesting. The scare tactics are really well taught of, the ladder scenes gave me goose bumps every now and then along with the sewer shadows. Definately another recommended masterpiece.

All-Time Top 3

1. Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 is just the game of the entire year with still to this second new made mods and ever improving chain of brilliant games such as Day of Defeat: Source and Counter-Strike: Source just takes the cake for all time top 3 of all games.

2. Quake

Quake was the "WOAH" of its time as it introduced "improved" coding for the first models and more interactable environment along with a really "fun to play" game in the end. It brought mutliplayer options to join the entire world together to kill the crap out of each other and enjoy what internet really has to offer :) I.D. has always amazed me in graphics department even though Doom 3 was a disappointment in gameplay department, Quake 4 made up for what that engine was missing in its predecessor.

3. Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny

This was the first game to HOOK me to its story line for it was almost better than a mushroom trip. The game combining acting skills with its time's strong graphics engine and a BIIIG fuggin world to discover and required puzzle solving skills and spell casting along with mixing items to get new items, discovering stronger weapons and EVEN ALTERNATE ENDINGS is just a marvel to play. Those who have never played this game might still even fall in love with it. I'd have to say, it's Oblivion of its age.
