wosret (http://stuartp.commixus.com/nhds/) posted a new version of his game for the Nintendo DS, heres whats new:

New features:

The MAIL bug that caused crashes and strange items to appear should now be fixed when compiling under Linux.
The tileset data has been moved to main RAM. This means no more limits on tile sizes, but you must be sure to set tile_width and tile_height correctly or the game will probably crash. Also, keep the tiles a reasonable size or you may run out of RAM for the game to use.
Some help files have now been included with the binary distribution. All the options on the help menu should work now.

Are the tiles and text supposed to be this tiny? This is awesome work, and I'd love to carry Nethack around with me, but the graphics are so small as to make the game unplayable for me. ASCII mode is almost usable, but is there any way to "zoom in," so to speak?

Yes, this looks cool. But on my Supercard, the tiles and text are all squished and unreadable.

So near so far!

On the author's site (http://stuartp.commixus.com/nhds/tileset.html) there is an alternate tileset that is slightly larger, but it is an ascii tileset. Make sure if you have a ds-lite that you are not in sub-pixel font mode which will be illegible. The problem is that nethack and variants are based on a standard terminal size with a width of 80 characters. The closest the ds can get to this is 64 characters with a font width of 4 pixels. If you want another alternative, try Donnie Russell's GBA ports of hack and rogue (http://www.freewebs.com/drussell/Download.htm#GameBoyAdvance). With just one screen of smaller size they are a lot more legible, at the expense of a touchpad keyboard, but I personally find touchpad keyboards a pain in the arse for gaming.

On my DS Lite I have:

POWDER - Actively being developed, there is a DS version as well as the original GBA version (it is an original roguelike developed for the GBA, not a port), DLDI support, http://www.zincland.com/powder/, I recommend giving it a look

DSCrawl - Port of Linley's Dungeon Crawl, DS support, not clear if it is actively being supported and I doubt it has DLDI compiled in, but it is well done and fun, http://www.nightmode.org/dscrawl/

NetHack for the DS - Actively being supported, latest version is from March 17, 2007 with DLDI support. Unfortunately, I also find the text for NetHack for the DS is too small to be useful for me, alas :( http://stuartp.commixus.com/nhds/

AGB_Rogue - The classic ported to the GBA, http://www.freewebs.com/drussell/Download.htm#GameBoyAdvance

AGB_Hack - Another classic ported to the GBA, http://www.freewebs.com/drussell/Download.htm#GameBoyAdvance

I have tried all the above and still find AGB_Rogue the most playable in terms of controls. This will change once I start using the button mapping function of NetHackDS. My only complaint with NetHackDS is the colour of the small fonts, which I would prefer to be a retro terminal green.

I simply can not stand playing DSCrawl because the control scheme is counterintuitive, especially for movement.

I can't get it to work in my DS either.

I'm using a DS Lite, with an M3 DS Simply card.

Tried patching the .nds file with either the R4TF.DLDI (which is supposed to be M3 DS compatible) or the M3SD.DLDI. Also just tried the .nds unpatched (generic).

Everything results in the "Can not read file system" error screen on launch (at least, I think that's what it says... the font is so small and blurry it's unreadable).

Has anyone gotten NetHackDS to work from an M3 DS Simply?

NetHack has always been one of my favs on other platforms. Sure would like to get it to work on the DS.

Is it that hard to skim through a couple of pages to find that out?

I downloaded the latest version from here..

Put the .nds file and the folder on my M3 Simply and DLDI patched it with the R4 patch. Working fine so far. BTW, good to see a fellow MST3k fan:D
