Apple boss Steve Jobs has announced the iPad 2 as a press event taking place in San Francisco.
Coming in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and with prices starting at $499, there will also be 3G models at an extra $130.
The new device will be released March 11 in the US and from March 25 in other countries.
Like the original iPad the battery life will be around 10 hours and come with data plans in the US from AT&T and Verizon.
The design is 33 per cent thinner than the original iPad, and at 8.8mm thick is thinner than the iPhone 4. It will feature an A5 dual core chip - purportedly nine times as powerful as in the original iPad
As well as a front and rear-facing cameras it boasts a gyroscope and comes in black and white models. A HDMI accessory will allow users to connect to bigger displays.
Jobs also revealed that there are 200 million iTunes accounts with registered credit cards and more accounts with one click purchasing than anywhere else on the internet, including Amazon.
To date, the App Store has paid out $2 billion to developers. Apple has a 90 per cent share of the tablet market, said Jobs, and in 2010 sold 15 million iPads. The company has now also sold its 100 millionth iPhone
