September 12th, 2006, 04:02
I owned 2 virtualboys.. At some point, both broke.
I wish I could buy one with ACplug again. Altough there is not much software for it (I had 2/3rd of all games) it has 2 of my favourite games ever "Virtual Wario Land" and the brilliant Neo Geo port of "Bomberman" a superb puzzle game.

I'd say these days it's more efficient to use emulators for Home Computers so I'd trew them all out (what I did with my great C64 collection anyway).

IMHO the systems worth keeping would be Atari 2600 (emu issues), Jaguar, 3do (unless you have enough HDD space to make iso's for Frodo), Saturn (get the white one), the Sega 16-bit Neptune combo, SMS (if you have 3D googles and Phaser), Snes, NDS, Game Gear, VB, Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS2 and Xbox1

The rest plays more sexy emulated

The collection lacks: PC Engine/Turbografics, Amiga CD32 (maybe), any SNK hardware either AES or NGP

and 560 games is not really much in relation of system owned... roughly only 19 games per system

Zeon
September 12th, 2006, 04:09
Isn't there a Turbo Graphx and ngp in the picture? There are however a lot of other systems missing. I don't think I saw a Phllips cd-i or supervision anywhere to name some.

September 12th, 2006, 04:18
Hmmm. My consoles are:
Sega: Mastersystem*2,game gear, megadrive*2, nomad, saturn, dreamcast*2
Nintendo: NES, gameboy, SNES, N64, gamecube, gba sp, ds
Sony: Playstation, PSTwo, psp
Commodore: cdtv, cd32, c64*3, c64sx*2, 5 amigas, plus/4
various: Atari jaguar, 3DO, xbox, neo-geo cd, various all in ones, MSX1, atari st 1040.

Oh, and some 500+ games.

Best system by far? Dreamcast!

And original hw is always better.

Actually its always better to have the originals. Emulated versions are exactly that - emulated. They don't feel right. And yes, I can emulate almost every game there with my PC. But even the best emulators don't feel quite right. If you've actually played the originals you'll know what I mean. Thats why console collections are so cool.

I even have the toploading nes along with 4 other neses, 4 n64s, 6 genesises, 7 gameboys, 3 ps1s, 4 different atari 2600s, I don't have a nes belt buckle though. I need to sell some stuff and get a bigger variety.

firedragon_jing
September 12th, 2006, 06:02
 That's a lot of systems.
But other than the PSP, and the spot reserved for the PS3, you're also missing the Sega SG-1000. Oh, and also the Atari Linx, N-Gage, N-Gage QD, as well as all the other failed handhelds, not to mention the original Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, and Gameboy Color.

Nice, and i thought my collection was nice,

i have
nes, snes, n64, gamecube, sega megadriveII, sega saturn, sega gamegear, atari STfm, atari Jaguar, 2 commodore amiga's, decent PC, crappy laptop and PSP.

I don't see why some people see somthing wrong with these collections, some people collect stamps and snowglobes. I now own every system I have ever owned,I rarely play them but wouldn't wanna lose them.

I just gotta find some Jaguar games(I only got two), I don't think the Jaguar was even released in this country (australia).

I've got a DC, SAT, PS(chipped), PS2, GC, GB, GBA, INTV II, Coleco, VCS, 5200, Gemini, TI 4A, a few sears/telstar/offbrand built in game machines (think pong), GEN, SNES, NES, NGPC, Starpath Supercharger (for the VCS), Atari 800xl, AppleIIgs, GameKing II, a Kaypro II and Kaypro 10, and.... probably something else i'm forgetting.

My setup though (while at school) is my DC hooked up with a VGA box and keyboard adapter to a KVM switch, networked to my pc via BBA, and tied into my PC's audio input.

At home, there's a 73inch rear projection HDTV that one of my DC's sit's next to and is intense for playing Rez.

Hello:

The best part of being a video gamer is the chase of hardware and software you like; the best part of being a collector is the chase of having the history behind those hardwares and softwares.

Collecting video game machines and their respective games (and keeping everything functional) is more of a thrill and pride than anything else. Who, of all of us, doesn't bring some friends to see your collection just to saw their faces in awe?

Many of us took long years to have a decent hardware and software collection. I have the following (and working):

Atari:
2600 x3
Jaguar
Jaguar CD
Lynx

Nintendo:
NES x3
Super NES
Gameboy (not color)
Gameboy Advance (not SP)
Virtual Boy
Nintendo 64
GameCube
Gameboy Player (if it counts)
Phat DS

Sega:
Master System model 1 (no 3D glasses)
Genesis model 1
Sega CD model 2
32X
Game Gear (Majesco version)
Sega Saturn (US model 1) x2
Dreamcast (my personal favorite)

Sony:
PlayStation (not PSone)
PlayStation 2 (not PStwo)

Misc:
3DO (Goldstar version)
Amiga CD32 (US NTSC - it runs most PAL games)
Turbo Graphx 16
Neo Geo Pocket
Colecovision
Game.com (Tiger electronics handheld before Gizmondo - First model)

Quite big, Isn't it? The machine that has the less games is Jaguar CD (3); If I decide to count every game I have (including the homebrew games, most of them for Dreamcast) the total will surpass the 650 mark.

I hope this information will answer some doubts about video game collecting.

one word. emulators.
yeah i owed a commodore 64. had over 400 games on tape pack. now i havre the entire collection on my Mac and PSP. it takes up about 1/1000th of the space and most importantly, i dont have to sit through 20mins of the tape loading for it to suddenly stop and crash. all you old schoolers know that horrible noise of the tape deck reaching the end of the tape but the screen is still flashing!!!! ah memories.

My collection is (deep breath):

A SF2 Hyper Fighting goliath coin op cab
Bride of Pinbot pinball table
Robotron cocktail table
2 x generic taito tables, both knackered with a view to mame'ing
2 x Upright Arcade cabs
Rainbow Islands, New Zealand Story, Numan Athletics, Hypersports arcade pcb's

Atari Jaguar I got for about £30, and 6 games for 99p down the local Game franchise. Bought it mainly for Tempest 2000 :-)

Original Famicom Hong Kong version (It's the same colour as the japanese version, but works in PAL) plus the disk drive attachment (woo!), but no disks for it (boo!).

Plus the usual crap (SNES, Gameboy etc)

I also had a SAM Coupe once (Think Sinclair Spectrum on steriods) but I've no idea where that is now.

Oh, forgot about my Archimedes, can't remember what ARM it is, but I've got a groovy co-pro card with a 486DX on it, so I can run Windows 3.11 pratically native under RISC OS.

(and the A2000 (A500 in a desktop box) me and my mate found in a skip. Need to fire that up at some point.)

i disagree. emulators allow screen resolutions that make old games look better, interpolation, other graphics smoothing engines....the only downside is the lack of the original controller. otherwise, emulation > original IMO.

Hello:

Emulators are here to preserve the history of video games. Still, a Mouse can't feel the same as a light gun and a keyboard can't feel the same as an arcade stick. Even with the many pads and other peripherals available for PC, the nostalgia of playing your favorite game in the original hardware is priceless.

I don't know.. I sold most of my old systems.. Emulators are not the real thing, but not everyone has the need for the real things. Mine, for example, I'm not a tidy person, they would only collecting dust, and that would be sad. It's easier for me to be part with them than ignoring them.

Most of those systems would look like crap on an larger TV and if you noticed most of the consoles disconnected with the plugs wrapped up. He pobably decided to take his old consoles out of the closet to take this picture. I really doubt he would sit that far from his 13 inch tv while he is actually playing, asuming that the "dumpster tv" wasn't just thown in because it fited neatly in this setup. Also why would he have the two heat behemoths (xbox and xbox360) in the same small section. That is just asking for the 360's red ring of death do to overheating.I also can't see him playing the virtual boy standing on the turbo grafix box while tring not to fail on his fragile ps2. This is clearly a temporary seat up used for an photo op.
