When a new console launches you expect it to hit the ground with a big "thwomp" that knocks the competition aside. Nintendo's 3DS (http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/21/nintendo-3ds-review/), however, has had something of a softer landing. It released in Japan on February 26th and had been positioned high and proud at the top of the sales charts. However, it's already been usurped by the humble PSP (http://www.engadget.com/tag/sony,psp), which according to Media Create sold 58,075 units in the week of March 28th to April 3rd. The 3DS, meanwhile, sold 42,979. This is in large part thanks to PSP dating sim Amagami, an old PS2 game that's just been re-released for the portable. It seems nostalgia trumps 3D wizardry again, and with the PSP getting cheaper in Europe this week, the competition is even getting tougher.

What makes it worse is that NDS games are still selling and being released every month at a good rate. I think we've come to a stage where graphics and "3d" effects that you may not want to use for long term play no longer matter. The DSi and even the Lite are still a ridiculous £100 brand new in amazon, so they must still be selling well too. Until Nintendo can come up with a best selling game the previous DS models and PSP will take the lead (no doubt another zZzZelda-always great games, as long as nintendo manages to give each one its own individual style). I may go for a new handheld soon too, although I havent used mine that much, its showing signs of age (when I move the screen up or down, its goes white for a split second-obviously a screen connector issue) :( Ill probably end up with another lite once the price goes down to less that half of what it is now (may have a while to wait), although thats probably not a great idea if they all "go white" after 5 yrs, lol. I would be surprised if the PSP2 wasnt on its way to being released soon! edit:- Ive just found out that itll be on its way towards the end of the yr ;) I thought the PSP2 or "NGP" should have hit the nail on the head by giving it mobile phone capability, but Sony still say it will not do so.. although many ppl will use seperate devices, Im still betting that in 10 yrs time gamers will laugh back at you when you mention that you cant call someone on the latest handheld! Everything will become an all in one one day, there are plenty of phones with 3d game capability already, so thats more competition for Sony and Nintendo :)
