At a UK press conference today, Nintendo revealed it expects sales of its DS handheld to reach 10 million units in Europe by the end of 2006.

According to Nintendo, six million DS units have been sold in the region so far, with more than 100,000 consistently sold every week.

The company boasts that the DS has held 70 per cent of the handheld market share for eleven consecutive weeks.

"Nintendo has always sought to innovate and produce games and consoles that appeal to everyone irrespective of age or experience," said Laurent Fischer, European marketing director for Nintendo.

"The Nintendo DS has done just this and been a phenomenal success, along with the Touch! Generation range that has expanded the gaming audience by providing something for everyone no matter who they are," he added.

Pet-sim Nintendogs has been a star performer, selling over four million units in the region, and shifting 60,000 units a week.

Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain has sold faster in Europe than it has in Japan, with 700,000 copies sold in the region so far.

Nintendo continues to promote and repackage the console, with a pink DS Lite due on sale October 27th.
