Dark Alex (http://dax.lan.st/) has released his Homebrew Enabler for the PSP v2.71 Firmware, which basically means you can run games via the Games Menu, bloody awesome release, heres the release info:

This program enables homebrew to be run in 2.71 through the XMB. It makes a patch that remains permanent until hardwar reset. Sleep mode won't remove the patch.

Note: this program writes some small files in the flash, ONLY the first time is executed. IT does NOY rewrite any existing file in the system, it writes new files, so the probabilities of bricking are practically null.

Instructions
------------

- Copy all contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
- Go to the PHOTO viewer of the XMB and enter in the folder "HEN".
- If the psp just freeze, reboot your psp and try again. Currently the tiff is very unstable and it
is only executed sometimes. I'll try to improve that in the future.

- The first time you run the program, you will see quickly a blue screen, and after that a screen
that can be of two colors:

* Red: the files couldn't be written to the flash (it hapens a few times). Just keep trying.
* Green: The files were written succesfully. After that, the xmb will be rebooted. Now you can run
the homebrew in format prepared for 2.71. (see details below).

- As mentioned before, the patch will remain resident in memory, and even entering sleep mode
won't delete it. Only a hardware reset will remove the program from memory.

- When you do a hardware reset, you'll have to run the tiff again. This time there won't be green or red screen, just a blue screen and xmb reboot, since
this time there is no need to write to the flash.

Notes about homebrew running
-----------------------------

- Current homebrews are not supported. Since current homebrews are in static elf format, they
won't run (they are rejected by the 2.71 kernel). Homebrews for 2.71 have to be in prx format.
Programmers see the programming notes.
In future versions i may patch the kernel to allow it to accept static elf's.

This is great news, but for using the currently available homebrew you are better of with the eLoader. Nice work Dark_Alex!!!

what's the point of releasing a loader that's unstable and doesn't work with any of the current firmware?

If he can patch the kernel, 2.71 will enter homebrew heaven.. and we can leave the unlimited limited 1.5 :)

Great news...i agree if it becomes a permanent patch then theres no reason 2.71 couldn't become the new 1.5.

I don't think anyones being negative....its all constructive criticism.

Cheers

Do you think it might work with a TA-082 2.6 psp ?

Yes, but you need 2.71.

Thats a VERY hard decision to have to make. The goal of this new homebrew loader is to load homebrew through the GAME section theoretically making a 2.71 PSP just as homebrew friendly as a 1.50 PSP.

With that said, and this still being a WIP not able to load much homebrew yet, I say WAIT. Wait for whatever comes first and then go that route.

Now this is pretty cool. Great advancement in the homebrew scene. Now it makes me wonder did i do the right thing downgrading my 2.71.

those facing the decision of doom...i would WAIT, but consider this a step towards the future! and faster than any of us imagined.....almost makes me regret selling my 2.71 ><

O.k. this sounds good, but can someone let me know what you'll able to load up with this? Are there any game emulators that will be loaded up with this???

Im dying for a snes emulator that will work on my 2.71 ta-082.

how would this be better than having a 1.5? 2.71 has tighter security than 1.5 so wouldn't that restrict it from running certain progs?

either way great news :)

not working yet to the max so just chill and wait for DA to expand on this, release an update and watch to see how the 2.71 becomes the new 1.5- days maybe a couple weeks tops.. have the patience!?

From what i can gather this exploits flaws in 2.71's security to allow kernal mode access, something so far only achievable on 1.5 or 1.0 this now paves the way for a permanent exploit that could be coded into a hb app or emu.So in theory when this is fully working we can upgrade to 2.71 and enjoy all the homebrew goodness and freedom 1.5 offered us with all the new features of 2.71.

i'll just stick to my custom 1.5 with devhook, what's the point in upgrading when i can already do whatever with my psp

/\ /\ I think that sums it up fairly well! This are all great steps in the right direction for people who dont have 1.5s :D

I haven't been as up to date with the custom Devhooks. Is there one that will allow you to launch homebrew while you are emulating the 2.71 XMB?

So what I am saying is that I launch Devhook. I am in the XMB with the 2.71 firmwarwe, then I could just go and launch a homebrew app.

If this isn't out, it would be something pretty useful.

PLEASE dont wait to the future to patch the kernal to accept ELFs do it NOW lol that is the idea of an homebrew loader

any devhook over .45 will launch homebrew on 2.71 that has been recompiled to run on devhook, i've only seen a nesterj 1.1.1 for devhook .45+

wait, so can I run any emulators if I upgrade my ta-802 mobo 2.6 to 2.71? or do most the emulators not work? It's one of the main reasons I bought a psp, to mess around with it and put on some crazy stuff, if I can't put emulators on it though, there's no real point in keeping it. Sure the web is nice, the games are all pretty crappy in my mind, but putting emulators on just throws the balance in favor of the psp. I'm going to return mine tomorrow because I'm really pissed off about the ta-802 mobo, but if stuff starts happenign where I can put the emu's and roms on it and play them on the go, I'll get it again.

razorak
October 5th, 2006, 10:52
it emulates 1.5 so theoratically speaking all emus would work.

P.S u can still use eloader 099 even after upgrading to 2.71
