The Microtouch is a mobile media device that aims to become an open-source alternative to the iPod Touch (http://www.shareable.net/blog/a-diy-open-source-ebook-reader-and-mobile-device)."Deeper investigation reveals that the Microtouch is a nifty little device (http://www.ladyada.net/products/microtouch/#apps). Powered by an 8-bit microcontroller with only 2.5K of RAM there is an example ebook reader application (http://rossum.posterous.com/8-bit-device-kindles-ebook-fire-an-e-reader-f). A primitive application framework (https://github.com/rossumur/microtouch) (for some definition of the phrase) is available as Free Software, and for the hardware hackers the EagleCAD PCB files (https://github.com/adafruit/microtouch) are published under a CC attribution-share-alike license.
