Though expected, Dolby Laboratories confirmed formal support for both the PS3 and Wii last Friday. The PS3 gets the full monty with support of Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound for games (same as PS2) and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround for Blu-ray movies. The Wii, on the other hand, will only use Dolby Pro-Logic II as was speculated. DLPII, which the GameCube also supported, uses simulated surround sound over stereo channels.

It's interesting to note that no console got a game audio upgrade this generation, regardless of a focus on superior technology. Were you as a gamer expecting more? How important is sound to your gaming experience?

sound is important to get in the game, but i find its mostly the games sound effects and your speakers that effects the most

serously I can't really notice the difference between

Sound quality isn't half as important as a good musical score. The Original Zelda probably played in -Dolby, but every gamer knows that tune and its because the game was great and so was the music.
