I suppose it's the package and not the cartridge that is cardboard, just like in the good ol' days before CD/DVD-based games.

They did that for the GB/GBC games. They used to come in plastic, but then used little plastic sleeves for storage. :(

Well, the convenient thing about the plastic DS case is that, you keep it to store your DS games in, because they are so tiny. With GBC and GBA games, thge cartriges were big enough to actually see.
