Via PSPFanboy (http://www.pspfanboy.com/2006/10/04/psp-sold-for-over-2000-on-ebay/)

Someone may have made a very valuable mistake on eBay. A PSP Value Pack was just sold for $2,025. Even with the free accessories and games, the hapless buyer overspent thousands of dollars. It looks like a pretty shady buyer by the name of karahsmama forced the bid up to $2000 and the winning buyer foolishly outbid by $25 on top of the inflated bid. Even more suspicious is how the seller has no reviews... Was this a scam? Or was it pure stupidity? (Most likely, it was both.)

Probably some Nigerian scammer :( They (not only them but they seem to be the major scammers according to ebay) bid a phone I was selling up to £550 and expected me to send it (with proof!) before they sent the funds! (the address was "By the Bus Stop" too! ) This person wont see a penny of that money Id wager! :p

emm u can search finished items on ebay (like i just did) and theres been loads of single PSP systems sold for even more.... so this is likely to be scammers or ppl pissing about.

You people obviously know nothing about money laundering.

I'd wager this was one of two things. Money laundering, or the buying making it so that nobody will buy it with no intention of paying.

F9zDark
October 5th, 2006, 19:54
This has got to be a scam. No sane human being would buy a PSP for 10x its worth. Especially considering one can just drive down the street and pick one up from their local game shop or buy one at BestBuy.com or some other online electronics retailer...

It's got two possible reasons:
1. Auto-bid 25$ everytime. So someone knew this and well.. figure it out.
2. Accidentally he put a extra zero there :D

Damn Nigerian scammers! They pay for the shipping most of the time knowing that the valuable item they are scamming you for will be more than worth it. SO just send them a heavy box full of DOG FECES and any other creative junk you can think of.

A nice note stating "F**K YOU" is also highly recommended.

okay first off.. money laundering, great idea. but no one is that dumb- next best idea was - it was his friend- A NASTY FRIEND ting to do cause the seller has to pay a small pcent.. and when i searched just now i saw a psp for 14,000+ same kinda auction- ridiculus fees to pay ebay on those big numbers!! not a good friend if you ask me- so I WOULD HAVE TO SAY its probably some sniping software that someone left running OR a grudge bid which has happened to me- someone who got revenge by outbidding whatever!!!

lol!!! I LOVE EBAY!!!

I had a friend who put up the BOX that an X-Box 360 came in on e-bay. He clearly stated many times it was just the box, there was nothing in the box, and they would only get the box. He did it as a joke.

Some lady bid $300 on it! She won the box. He felt bad and told her it was just a box and she got mad at him! What a dumbo!

Some lady put a ghost on e-bay, and got like $25,000 for it from a gambling casino in England. She sold literally nothing fro $25,000!

Another lady put up a grilled cheese sandwich that she claimed had the image of the virgin mary on it and got $75,000 for it.

Gotta go, my ghost is making grilled cheese...

You really have to be careful when buying ANYTHING from eBay, as it isn't what you would call a "reliable" site. I remember just 3 years ago when it was scam/spam free.

If ebay was scam free today, so many people would buy and sell things there and there would ne tons more to choose from. Needless to say, it would be great.

I've been trying to sell my (ta-82) psp on ebay for almost three weeks. I have had to relist it twice because damn Nigerian scammers keep winning it with high bids in the final minutes. One was using some woman's stolen account and another was a fresh account that was cancelled as soon as I reported it to ebay.
Like someone mentioned earlier, they send fake messages from paypal, saying that payment has been received, and that it will appear on my account as soon as I send them the delivery tracking number (indicating that the psp has been shipped to Nigeria). Naturally, I report them to ebay as soon as I can, but ebay handles unpaid bidder disputes on the assumption that the buyer and seller will be communicating with each other as the dispute progresses. Without the scammer being willing to communicate with ebay, I am stuck paying the final value fees; which sucks when my entire reason for selling the psp is to raise money for a Wii or a ps3 on launch day.

In the end, the whole situation sucks big, hairy, Nigerian gorilla balls.

(PS- I didn't do any research prior to making that last comment. If you "know for a fact" that gorillas do not live in nigeria; that nigerian gorillas do not have hairy balls; that nigeria does not exist; or that an idea, being an incorporeal abstraction, has no mouth and is thus incapable of sucking anything, let alone sweaty gorilla sack; don't bother replying to let me know. I understand the obvious.)

if she would have gotten pissed at me i would have been like you know what u owe me $300

i think it was very noble and honest of your friend to come out like that even when he stated it in his page

This makes me think of dumb things I could get away with selling on ebay... hehe.... how about a mobile phone box or a f-china plate (The f standing for fake) or selling the invisible man.. lol

But yeah, this may sound harsh, but your buddy should not have told that lady that it was an empy box. Its really her own dumb fault for being ready to pay $300 without reading the description. Scams on ebay sucks balls, but if its down to buyer stupidity then I would have gladly took her money and laughed. Whats even worse is she got mad... I would tell her to be mad and get madder when she is handing over 300 bucks.

The lesson to be learned :: Dont be a retard.

ik it was a bad prize but u would probly get more than 200 bucks...y not 200 bucks could get u a few psp games or another psp. i will do it once i create an ebay account. ill post back after i sell it to let u know how it went.

The reason for that is because in order to legally import something like a psp into the country, you have to pay something around a 60% duty on the price of the item. Working at CompUSA in miami, 90% of our retail sales were brazillians that would buy thousands of dollars in laptops and cellphones (in cash) to smuggle into Brazil. It is literally cheaper (as long as you're buying enough) to fly here and buy it, then smuggle it in, then to buy it in-country.

Thats a good idea ya know... we should all put our boxes on ebay (clearly stating it IS just the box) with a £10 minimum bid, and see who (if anyone) gets the biggest sale. The winner should recieve the money that was made by everyone who successfully sold their PSP box for £10 or over :D
