Hi. Dan G here again. (Thinks: Must get someone else to do the blog later on today...). Just wanted to post this early morning blog to settle a situation that has been gathering momentum on the net.

The question is: Does PS3 get hot? Not just 'hot' but 'dangerously' hot or hot enough to cause a malfunction. It has been reported in other circles that machines at the Tokyo Game Show were expiring dut to heat. It has even been suggested that this issue has played a part in the recent dip in Sony's share price.

OK. Here's the independent, non-Sony approved truth. We've played a PS3, for a day, in a room, with it on a table in front of us. At no stage did anyone comment about the noise it made (ie, next to none). And a collegue put his hand behind the machine after it had been running for a few hours and felt warm air being quietly and safely extracted via a fan via the vents at the back of the machine. The surface of the machine remained at room temperature with a small portion at the back being 'warm'. Not hot - 'warm'.

So, the PSM3 independent verdict here is that - quote - "PS3 generates less heat and noise than the combination of 360 and powerbrick".

Lol, so this is from an official mag, huh?
We'll see if it's accurate.
Is this the same mag where the editor said he wasn't buying a PS3?

If your going to pay a lot for a console, it's glad to know that it's quite and doesn't overheat. :)

It's highly unlikely that PS3 will tank....Does anyone remember the PS2 shortages when it was released? And the insane amounts of money people paid on ebay for one?

Do you think that the sales of psm3 magazine and the sales of the ps3 are independent? The more people buy the PS3, the more will buy the magazine. It would be in their best interest NOT to make statements that would harm the sale of the PS3 because it would hurt them in the long run.

Do you see now how this cannot be considered an unbiased source for information about the PS3 hardware?

I can understand how it's not unbiased, let's just hope it's accurate.Cause as far as the PS2 hardware was concered it was a POS.I went through 4 of them :(
Bad thing about the PS2 and those disk read errors was that sony charged $100 dollars to fix it and it was usually just a matter of adjusting the laser height.
They pulled a fast one as far as that was concerned

On sale Thursday 3rd August, PSM3 is the next generation of the long running independent PlayStation magazine which launched in 2000. The magazine debuts with an exciting and contemporary new look, pushing the visual language of PlayStation 3 games to the forefront – telling the story of the biggest releases and happenings around the eagerly-awaited console.

PSM3 is an indenpendent magazine (read:not owned by Sony). The fact that the media only made a big deal out of the PS3's failures at TGS due to heat and left out, willfully, accounts of all other system failure (which we knew from another article was true; ALL systems there at TGS had failures, not just the PS3) is far more biased than a Playstation magazine testing it out for themself.

Honestly, where does one go for information? Obviously sources that are closest to what they want; a Playstation enthusiast is not going to read NintendoPower for information on PS3...

I'm not saying that Sony would pay them off or anything, but they ARE biased because if they report that it overheats causing fires and death, then there will be a vast amount less buying their magazine.

I would say they would be an exceelent source for information on games and accessories, but not the core hardware itself, as without it people simply won't buy their magazine.
