Dark_Alex is about to release a 2.71 custom firmware for non-TA-082 devices called 2.71 SE (SE stands for Special Edition)

The revision A will feature:

- 1.00/1.50 Eboot support (both kernel and user mode)

- 2.71 Eboot support (both kernel and user mode)

- run on 2.71 vsh

- Ability to run devhook (both 1.50 and 2.71 versions are fully compatible)

- Ability to run any 2.71 (and below UMDs)

- 1.00/1.50 prx executable support

- support both kxploited and unpatched eboots for 1.50 kernel

- support any 2.71 homebrews codded for HEN C

- Compatibility is 100% for 2.71 homebrews and approx 99% for 1.00/1.50 homebrews

How does it work ?

Both 1.50 and 2.71 kernel are flashed into flash0
it uses 1.50 kernel to bootstrap patched 2.71 firmware

How to flash it?

You will need to use the helper that will be provided to get a complying dump into a DXAR format, once you get it done properly use the flasher to "update" to the 2.71 SE-A

Pros and cons ? :

Pros : - Full 2.71 homebrew support
- Almost full 1.50 homebrews support (some homebrews like umdemu or xflash might not work properly with it, still so far all of the 1.50 homebrews I tried worked fine)
- Recovery menu
- Full Devhook support
- Access to all 2.71 features
- Native 2.71 UMD support
- 1.50 decrypted prx executable support
- Real no-kxploit embebed (thus 1.00 unpatched eboot support)
- have access to all 2.71 kernel features using 2.71 homebrews, such as GPS support or wpa support.

Only known con: takes about 1-2 second(s) more to load the firmware at startup

UPDATE : A new con: Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean are going to be removed from this firmware and wont be able to be selected.

I dont see why you would need to. Its a firmware replacement. Dark_Alex wouldnt release something if it had a chance to brick your psp. I cant wait for this to be released, I am going to try it for sure!

so you dont think it can brick??
if it doesn't, then i might just use it.
it would give me more of a use for my new 4GB mspd :)

There IS a possibility that it could brick your PSP, considering it writes to it's internal falsh. Nothing that writes to your PSP's internal flash is 100% safe.

This is awesome, the psp homebrew scene is entering a new era:
The 2.71 era :D

FYI this was suppose to be released today, but due to a serious bug which would brick your PSP it will be delayed. The bug is due to 1.50 not supporting the new languages in 2.71, so if you change the language to an unsupported version and hard reset the PSP you'll brick.

One word sums up my reaction. WOW.

Is there any way to run the cheat device for GTA on it? ;) Or will you just have to use devhook to emulate a lower firmware? I like using that to mess about :P

Any thoughts on whether you'll be able to go to vanilla 1.5 if you wanted?

Cloudy

PS: Keep up the good work Dark_Alex!

It sounds like dark_alex is going to remove the language files that may cause your psp to brick so he can have a build out tomorrow.

UPDATE : A new con: Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean are going to be removed from this firmware and wont be able to be selected.

I can't wait. :D
I think I am going to reflash my 1.5 with the 1.5 update so i can be ready for it.

ICE
October 8th, 2006, 05:32
hmm i am naturally against changing 1.5 to anything but if people use this thing and its as good as it seems i might just do it.

kando
October 8th, 2006, 08:49
i will change under 2 conditions:

first:

- Almost full 1.50 homebrews support (some homebrews like umdemu or xflash might not work properly with it, still so far all of the 1.50 homebrews I tried worked fine)

when that is 100% and all work, thats step one.

step 2 is to support "____ NOUMD (1.50 only)" for 2.71.

gimme those 2 and sold :P

Why not downgrade from 2.01 using the Noobz downgrader?

gamesquest1
October 8th, 2006, 11:08
will this have recovery mode like the other custom firmwares and will you be able to use the wlan switch to go to another firmware if so these would solve that problem wouldnt it......they are the 2 features i love wid the custom firmwares

October 8th, 2006, 11:58
This is great news.

If i can do all the things a 1.5 can do but on a 2.71 then there is no reason not to do it as 2.71 has more options (wallpapers in jpg etc).

October 8th, 2006, 13:31
and what is vanilla 1.50?

"vanilla" means "plain / untouched" 1.5. basically the original 1.5 firmware with no mods etc.

i'm still interested to know if this can be run through devhook, and if theres an easy way to do it. (i mean, is it safe to run updates when running 2.71 through devhook? i dont like the sound of that!) the only person to ask on the thread just seemed to get everyone telling him "why bother?" - well, it's his choice and i can see why someone would want to do it. i do too!

i will *never* change my firmware from 1.5, since i want to avoid any updates i ever can, but it would be cool if when emulating 2.71 i could still run homebrew. its a convinience thing rather than necessity.

I have two questions.

1. If i have a custom firmware already will i need to go back to original 1.5 before i get this firmware?

2. Why would you even need devhook to be campatible with this if it already does every thing 2.7 and 1.5 can do?

October 8th, 2006, 15:00
Wow, 2.71 looks very attractive now. I don't think I will upgrade now, but I might later if the features and pros grow further.
TA-082 users with 2.71 are damn lucky now. This is almost as good as a downgrader. Now they can fully enjoy homebrew too.
DaRk_Alex is a genius.

(Video_Freak: I like your new avatar. :) )

Yeah but devhook still only supports up to 2.7.

bullhead
October 8th, 2006, 15:06
So is this firmware just 2.71 with all the benefits of 1.5 and 1.0?

If so I may just upgrade. Im excited about this one...

well there no point just giving up on devhook cus you can play hombrew on 2.71 there is and will be more updates and devhook is probably the safest wat to test new stuff when messing with firmware files without screwing up you psp so no point saying devhook useless i still think its the most amazing thing available for psp with custom firmware coming a close second but one thing i would like is the devboot option on the custom firmware this will remove the need for having devhook in the games section also with all these firmware options coming out im getting confused on what i should do, i really want 0x89 i think that will be amazing especially if that uses some of the teqniques found with this so it plays 2.71 games nativley :D but still this is amazing news

this is very simillar to the modchip having the 1.5 kernel run on top of the 2.71 very nicley done dark alex. the questions are

A. do i have to uninstall my custom firmware to upgrade to 2.71 and

b. should I upgrade to 2.71.

Btw this is the first time I can remeber upgrading seeming useful lol.

2.71 is NOT the new 1.50 regardless of what it can run it is still not entirely stable. Reread it my friends some eboots that run on 1.50 may not be executable. The loading time is also going to be lacking. WE DO NOT need this. Plus it writes to the flash so we could potentially brick our psp's doesnt sound good to me. . . . . 2.71 AND 1.50 users already have full exploited access to 1.50 eboots!!!! This=waste of time and we need to get 2.80 and 2.81 firmware running on devhook on either

A-2.71 firmware
or
B-1.50 firmware

These dumb mods on PSPupdates and the edited 2.71 firmware is a waste of time. I'm sorry, but it's true.

Personally this just beat out the PS1 emulator as the thing I'm most fervently waiting for.
but yes he does say there is the possibility that some 1.5 eboots won't run right, however there is still none confirmed not working. Yeah it rights to the flash and maybe could brick the PSP, but that's our choice now isn't it? And to the point of full access to eboots, I would love to execute them from the XMB, and not have to run Devhook.

PS- It's ok to have an opposing view, but don't be such a ****ing dick about it.
