View Full Version : How-To: Analog control stick for your Sony PSP

Heres an excerpt

History is littered with game systems using far-too-stubby of controller sticks. From the Intellivision's "disc of doom," to Coleco's "shaft of stiffness" (quiet, you!), and even now, in this high-tech age, the Sony PSP's "sliding nub of death." It's unfortunate that the PSP is saddled with that thing -- it's a pretty slick system otherwise, with a library of almost 5 games! (Please don't key our cars.) Well what if you could augment that sliding nub with something more useful, like an actual analog control stick? Well now you can!

In part 1 of this article we'll show you how to wire up an analog stick (from a PS1 / PS2 Dual Shock controller or an original Xbox controller) to your PSP. It's a lot easier than you might think. In part 2 (coming soon) we'll walk you through making a swell "clip on" joystick enclosure for the stick (or you can simply roll your own in the mean time). Ready to do this thing? Get in there!

For part 1 of this project we're going to learn how to attach an analog stick to one of the PSP's internal circuit boards. You can then use this info to build a custom joystick "clip-on" device yourself, or use the steps that will be covered in the upcoming part 2 of this project.

Wow that sounds interesting the problem will be then you will have a clunky peace in front ofr your PSP. That will literaly make it more fragil in the sence that you cant use a case to protect your psp. I guess im the only one that doesnt have a problem with the regular joystick.

This is a great idea. I hope there is no soldering involved.

Edit: Dangit.

I just went to Gamestop and bought some rubber replacement nub from them, pack of 3 was 5 bucks and came in black white and blue. Guy showed me that the psp nub just 'clips in' place and was swappable with the packaged ones. It sticks out a lil bit but it def still fits in my sleeve and is still swappable with the original nub. But it's way more fun to play MvC this way. ;)

I got a pack of 5 analogue sticks off ebay for $5 (au) ranging from a bit bigger than the original nub (the one I use) to a full size ps2 one.
I found the bigger I went the more it would stick :(

/\ /\ Why not use the add on in the "Dismatle your PSP in five minutes" video? It looks pretty tidy with the ammended casing and also gives you the option of using TV out :D

Like some of the others I got extra "nubs" of various sizes off ebay (free with a screen protector!) and they work great :p

I got a set of 3 large and 3 different texture ones with a screen protector from Gamestop for 9 usd. And since they are removable it works great.

I like that second one. Not unsimilar to an old clip on I had for a GB color system. Changing the cross pad to a stick is the way. Simply making the sliding nub a bigger sliding nub didn't work for me. Still feels awkward.

ben heck does it again, he isn't affraid to open anything up and solder to it. [:

what needs to be done is figure out a way to replace the face buttons with an analog stick. that way katamari and various fps's can use two sticks. i know there has to be a way to do this via usb. why can't sony just make something to do it. oh well.
