Article from PSPFanboy (http://www.pspfanboy.com/2006/11/07/peter-dille-calls-ds-for-kids-in-engadget-interview/)

Dave Karraker isn't the only Sony executive to face the mic in the past day. Engadget, went face to face against Peter Dille, about PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP. Just like Karraker, Dille says that the PSP does not compete directly with the DS:

We're not focused on competing with the DS head to head against the consumer they're going after. If we were, you'd see a very different top-down strategy. You'd see a very different technology that would deliver to games geared towards kids. Which is for the most part what they're doing. And so when people talk about how we're doing vis-a-vis the Nintendo DS, again, it's not the whole story. We're selling a device to guys our age, who are using it to play games, to play movies, to access video on the net, music, etc. And it's a very different product than Nintendo DS... You can look at the software that they sell. All their licensed kid stuff. So, what we're doing with the PlayStation Portable is really establishing a new marketplace, and establishing, frankly, a new beachhead. And that takes time. Having said that, it's the fastest selling platform we've launched to date. We're up to 20 million units worldwide, and that's off to a great start. So, we just need to sort of set people's expectations based on what we're trying to do, not compete against a kid machine.

thats what i've been saying all along, DS is for kids, and Sony's not targeting kids,

PSP is a "MULTIMEDIA" system/Portable, not a game system/portable like DS.

Porn is for kids too, and how many people still watch it?

Any way, I think Sony is lying out their asses when they say they aren't trying to take Nintendo on in the handheld market. They are trying to make an excuse for the fact they had to cut their shipments quite a bit, and the losses they are having with the console as well as their terrible rep right now (lik-sang, controversial ads, plain stupidity).

Peter Dille (sounds like a pornstar name) must be under the old jedi mind trick or something. Or he just gets paid a lot to tell everyone what Sony wants them to hear. I'd say its both.

ds is not for kids what about brain training the old mans game ;)

also they have some good rpg's final fantasy 3, phoenix wright, sieken desnsetsu, castlevania.

tbh ds does have some kids games but it clearly looks like sony is making excuses. they are competing with the ds and they are fighting with all these cool capibilities the psp has and so far sadly it doesnt seem like they are winning.

I'd say Death Jr. is the closest of the 3 to being a kids game. Why hasn't sony gotten Capcom to make a Resident Evil for us (with multplayer infrastructure for up to 4 people to play)? Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is freaking awsome, 2 player support for killing dead guys in a RE1 remake!

Sony, get on the ball and get us some more games we want! Killzone, Medal of Honor, and Gun: Showdown are great, but come on... All that potential and not many "great" games. Nintendo got RE, where is ours?

DS is for kids. Resident Evil DS is like the only MA game. I own and am very proud of my DS Lite, but I know it's for kids. How could anyone deny it, when they look at the ratings on the games? Pfft.

Just cause a game is fun doesn't make it for kids,I'm an adult an I play DS every day.
What do you have to be shooting other humans in the head for it not to be " for kids" c'mon now that in itself is an adolescent statement.People my age grew up with the likes of mario and zelda.I love nintendo their products are just fun

Exactly. I don't know why some PSP owners turn their noses up at the DS. Many of them have the Daedalus emulator and the GBC emu, wtf? Who can't get enough of the "kids games" like The New Super Mario Bros. or even Metroid Prime: Hunters (fun online gameplay btw)? I know I can't. Love the nostalgia of the DS. DS also has some pretty awsome homebrew too (like I said sometime before, Doom online!)

Metroid prime online is awesome, although I get my arse kicked every time, lol
What a warped thing to think that "adult" means violent or sexual, pretty twisted world view alot of us have.
I was only into that sorta thing when I was a teen.
Honestly I don't even play games like GTA, cause frankly I think they're kinda evil.To each their own though...

I agree, though we may need to change our view on what is adult and what is childish on a lot of things not just games.
To me nintendo is an innovator, thank goodness we've had them around.Ya know what, the psp CAN'T compete with the DS cause most of the games are crap!I like to have fun and support innovation, only thing psp really has going for it is homebrew.

I get owned too when online. Some people are crazy on there. If you finish the single player game (pretty easy) your stats carry over to online play as well. That's why some people own others so much.

GTA is hella fun though! Who can't like pimping, head shots, and running over pedestrians all in one game?

I'm not really into the GTA thing cause I don't like exploiting or harming my fellow man in real life, so why do I need to have fantasy experiences of doing that?

It is fantasy, thats just it. I couldn't do it in real life, unless I had to do so to save a loved one. I'm saying its fun to be evil once in a while and it's one of the perfect outlets for doing so without getting into trouble.

I rarely play it though; Gun: Showdown has my attention, as does Killzone, followed by all the homebrew I can stomach (and maybe I'll get Loco Roco or Me and My Katamari for something different). Gun, a western movie that's a game (but also has lots of racism, and violence, but not in the sense of the GTA games) but riding for the Pony Express is still fun.

If we are talking about the Nintendo DS, we must refer to the DS Lite as it blows the original version out of the water.

With that being said, I think the DS Lite is a more universal gaming system. Anyone from children to adults, to the elderly, both male & female can get enjoyment from a DS. Moreover, the DS Lite is probably easier for a kid or elderly to pick up and get started with.

Heres a good guide to go by:

DS Lite Arctic White = Kids & Elderly
DS Lite Pink = Girls
DS Lite Black = Guys

I happen to have the Black DS Lite and although it has not been able to take the place of my PSP yet, there is an obvious feel of craftmanship & care when playing some of the quality DS titles. The DS Lite definitely has that Nintendo charm that we have all come to know and love. And many like me have grown up playing the NES & SNES so I have a nostalgic draw to Nintendo.

If SONY was not trying to compete with the DS Lite, company representatives such as this guy would not talk so negatively about it.

I still favor the PSP but we have Final Fantasy III and other great DS titles right around the corner so we'll see.

i sold my DS for a 512 MB memory stick for my PSP when i first learned about homebrew over a year ago but it looks like DS has some killer games out.
Yeah, I had gotten the original ugly DS, but ended up selling it. But I'll never sell my new shiny Black DS Lite.

were not starting this fanboy system vs system fight again arent we (megadrive is cool snes is lame)? the problem is the 2 systems have to many things in common that its almost impossible to not compare them, but guys as a company you have to target the widest market possible (SpongeBob for PSP, Resident Evil for DS).
I agree that the PSP has the better Hardware inside but DS has a better playability 2 screens 1 a Touchscreen. But it is only to your personal favor which system youre tend to.
I personally wanted to have a device that can do more than just gaming so i bought a PSP, little time later i learned about Homebrew and downgrading whitch convinced me in my decision, on the other hand if i would be into new gaming concepts i might have bought a DS.

For kids? I'll tell you what's for kids.

"Oh yeah? Well we didn't want Nintendo's stupid market anyway! Waa waa waa! Nintendo is for babies! We're gonna go make our own rules where we can win, and you can't play! WAA!!"

How about just making some friggin's decent games? Y'know, something that I wouldn't feel like I was being robbed blind paying $50 for. Oh, and anytime you wanted to stop trying to kill homebrew would be just fine with me, too. :)

Lol,true that.Bad thing is that the psp has such great potential that isn't being realized.Instead sonys trying to slowly milk that potential for all the money it's worth and at the same time killing the system.
I mean damn, the screen is awesome as well as the hardware yet the things to utilize that awesome hardware, the software is for the most part subpar with the exception of homebrew ofcourse which is free.
Damn shame free software is literally kicking sonys ass,or maybe that's they way the future is gonna go any way and sonys ahead of the curve, lol

Unfortunatly I think sony have got there ideas about gamers very mixed up. Gamers are either little kids, or big kids... Trying to create a category of mature adult gamer... is crazy, mature adults dont play games, they use interactive features, but not games... And multimedia functions is stupid as most mature adults that like that kinda gadgety stuff will probably have a decent phone which will cover all the multimedia features psp has but better. (My O2 XDA mini is far superior to PSP in terms of playing media files (in fact it opens a huge lot more files than my psp can even with all that great homebrew), maybe umds is better but who's gonna wanna carry around big umds when u can carry micro sd cards?)

I class myself as a big kid, thus I play alot of games for multiple consoles. I have no preference as to whether games are violent, bloody, sexual, adult themed, cute, ugly, crap graphics, fps, rts, rpg, All I care about is playing an innovative, creative game. Whether this is targetted for kids or adults does not concern me so long as it achieves the goal of every game, being entertaining.

To think that there is a market out there of adult gamers who only play adult themed games is madness and shows how little sony know of their target audience. Gamers are big kids, believe me i have yet to meet a true "older" gamer that isn't a big kid, and I have played games with soo many people over the years.

Before anyone calls me DS fanboy, I only have 2xold style gameboys. I bought a DS and took it back as I couldn't justify the cost of getting it plus getting a passcard/flash cart. I never had a gc but have played a bit on one.

I have a psp, a ps2 but will not buy a ps3 until i can get a second hand one for less than £50 because I dont believe the console is worth £500, I wont be using blu-ray (main reason for high ps3 cost) as i dont have a hd tv (and dont intend to buy one anytime soon since i kinda like my projector)

Anyway, I'm waiting for microsoft's attempt at the handheld market as I know for sure that will be the way forward. (Pocket pc, windows mobile already rocks even for games, got sim city, monopoly & age of empires on my phone, all of which i have spent a lot more time playing than on me psp.)

Sounds like sour grapes to me! Back when the fortunes of the two systems were reversed, Sony constantly pointed out that they had shipped more PSPs than Nintendo had DS units. That tune seems to have changed now that the DS is on top.

didnt they say they were competing against Ipod?

Why would they do so with a handheld gaming system (unless they are talking about one of their mp3 players, which still is behind in the market)? If they did say they were taking on the iPod, I doubt they meant with the PSP, and if they did, they are getting killed in that respect as well. That would put Sony way behind in both markets: handheld gaming and portable multimedia entertainment.

I agree. The DS is for kids. I couldn't see myself with one of those things. I would rather not have a system if my only option was a DS. When I was a teenager I liked Mario and Zelda and Nintendo but now it is just gay. I apologize to all the DS fanboys in this thread.

gay-adjective, -er, -est, noun, adverb –adjective
1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
4. a homosexual person, esp. a male.

So are you implying that mario and link are gay, because both of them run around saving a princess
that sounds stright to me. Are you implying that something related to the ds or nintendo is bright and flashy, or are you implying that everyone that works for nintendo is gay.

Video games are ment to be enjoyed. As long as I enjoy the games, that is to say I enjoy them, I dont really give a **** what the target audience is, and further more calling something "gay" and then claiming that you are of the mature audience is quite ironic in my opinion. That is not really a direct attack on you, but rather a warning for your own benefit in life... Calling things you don't like "gay" is pretty immature.. Much more immature than playing Mario or Zelda (which are challenging, finely programmed games, are are partially responsible for what we expect our more "mature" platformers and adventure games look like.) Dont knock fun because a few of your buddies dont think its cool.

I would have to argue that the GTA series are quite innovative. Just because some ignorant people only seem to purchase the blood and gore games trying to be cool dosnt really mean you should knock a good game series.

Since when is Mario, Legend of Zelda, or any other games we've all grown up with are all kids games. I don't know many 8-15 year olds who can beat any of the older Mario games let alone some of the newer ones. Would you consider the Final Fantasy games as kid games?

GTA takes no skill to play except run, shoot, kill, drive, repeat. And those skills are hardly every used since auto lock is a big time helper in those games (many people use this, don't lie) and the driving aspect is rather terrible as well.
