Meme or not, the DS does print money. As soon as Nintendo makes the handhelds, they are snapped up and devoured by Japanese people. And the Wii appears poised for much of the same. The handheld is such a juggernaut that some analysts worry it will actually directly compete with the Wii. Talking to Reuters, Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata pointed out:
Some analysts say the largest rival of the Wii is the DS. But if you take a look at DS sales in the United States in the Thanksgiving week, or DS sales in Japan in the week of the Wii launch, there has been little impact.
The only impact felt was in the Nintendo coffers. Ka-ching!
