Sony has turned to SanDisk to help it develop the next incarnation of its Memory Stick memory card format: the Memory Stick Pro HG. The Memory Stick Duo-sized card ups the maximum storage capacity to 32GB, though it may be some time before 32GB cards come to market.

Sony and SanDisk claimed the new card has a maximum data transfer rate of 480Mbps - matching USB 2.0. That's a theoretical maximum, of course - operating system and other overheads will scale it back.
The Memory Stick Pro HG supports the current 4-bit parallel and serial Memory Stick data transfer buses but also introduces an 8-bit parallel data channel. That, Sony said, ups the minimum write speed from 40Mbps to 120Mbps, but you'll need a Pro HG-compatible device to get it. The 8-bit interface operates at 60MHz, but the card will also run at 40MHz to support the older interface.

At this stage Pro HG is a specification and, presumably, a set of prototypes. Sony said it would begin offering licenses in January 2007 to companies keen to support the new format in Memory Stick readers. It didn't say when it will bring the format to market. Nor did SanDisk, for that matter. ®

This is what we needed more space. Too bad it will be like 1 billion dollars.....

wow....hopefully the 4gb will be cheap enough for me to be when this one comes out

Well, this is good and all but another example of SONY creating something for the PSP that should have been done already or close to done at the time of the PSP's launch. The fact that the PSP came with a mere 32MB stick was, and still is an insult.

With that being said though, a 32GB memory stick for homebrew enabled PSP's would be homebrew heaven.

I hope that this sees the light of day soon and that they are compatible in some way with homebrew PSP's. I know there is a 4GB cap and all but I'm hopeful for a workaround.

I dont think you sould use this in your PSP, im pretty sure that you would need a hardware mod to get around the 4gb cap.

December 11th, 2006, 16:30
It would work, but would require a firmware update to support it. I doubt you'll get the full speed performance out of it though.

Well, 2.82 did remove the 4GB cap, so those lucky *******s with the rarest-of-rare 8GB MSPD can probably use it...

Great! With recent MVSPSP/CPSPSP/gpSP archievements, we definitely need some more gigs on our sticks!

isnt there a 2.71-3.00 hybrid SE custom firmware? maybe it will accept the bigger MSs.

I doubt the PSP is a Pro HG-compatible device . Or am i wrong. Think it needs a HW mod to work ..

The Memory Stick Pro HG supports the current 4-bit parallel and serial Memory Stick data transfer buses but also introduces an 8-bit parallel data channel.

It will work on the PSP, but the transfer speeds won't increase.

OMG!

I could actually dump this defective old Archos Music player and use my PSP to serve up ALL of my music!

But wait, one major downside! You need to install 2.81fw in order to use anything above 4GB's. And since you have to have the firmware resident BEFORE you can read the memory card, you can't use Devhook to simply emulate it.

Now I have a second PSP for use with new firmware, so this isn't that much of a pain to me. But you guys with 1 PSP, the larger sticks will be off-limits, unless you give up the Homebrew, Emulators, and Game Loaders.

The only hope is custom firmware... Dangerous to install, but just imagine 32GB's of ISO's!

That is huge for such a small thing lol

LilSwish722
December 11th, 2006, 21:43
WOW!!! 32GB. god. that would be great except for it would require new firmware and it will be...uh. 2GB here is $109 so multiply that by 16...thats 1744 dollars!!!!...ok now that i think about it, sony wouldnt make any money off of that. so im guessing this is around 400-500 USD. still WAYYYYY too expensive lol

I just got a 4 gig for the price I paid for a 1 gig when the psp was first released. If the prices continue to fall as steadily as this, this shouldn't cost nearly as much as some of you guys are saying.

Besides, I'm not upgrading for more space. 1.5 ftw.

lol, i misread at first too

this is insane, what could you possibly need with THAT much memory?

Auriman1
December 11th, 2006, 22:28
If such a thing is released, I'll just take advantage of the reduced price of smaller gigabyte capacity memory sticks, unless I find a money tree or something.

Tonx_9
December 11th, 2006, 22:57
OMG man what CAN'T you fit on a 32GB card...and it would cost heaps too because that many gigs should be a hard drive!

I wouldn't consider the decision to include a 32mb stick with the psp a bad one. If they had a much larger stick included with the psp, the price of the psp would have been much bigger, and not everyone would need one. It would be a waste.

wait if you need fw 2.82+ for this to work... couldn't you just switch to this memory stick once your on devhook??

The card sounds like it would be more expensive then the PSP itself.

The 4gb memory stick was once 199.99 dollars , the same price as an psp

That would be your Answer

Here is some insite for all you slower people,

1.Install Devhook on a Normal MS 2.82-3.02

2.On the 32GB card install DevHook with a MemCard Reader Same FW as Normal Card.

3. Load Dev-Hook with the normal card and boot to XMB

4. Once Loaded Hot Swap the Cards

5. Ok now do what ever you like

That's nice, but can 2.82 firmware even read a 32 GB memory stick? Or is the limit 8 GB?

December 12th, 2006, 02:30
32GB?! I saw 32MB, so I didn't read it, but HOLY SHIT THIRTY TWO GIGABYTES! That's (sadly) almost half my harddrive!

But the idea of 32gb is great, if this is true I won't even want a Zune player =]

I think that they should come out with mini HVD's/BD's/HDDVD's. Those discs can hold lots of stuff and making mini versions of them for handhelds would be perfect. Especially if Sony had mini BluRay discs for PSP2 that could also be played on PS3/4. They would be able to hold a lot more space than the stupid UMD's and would be a perfect match for normal Bluray discs.

No offense and all, but blue ray is not cheap hardware to throw in any device. And the idea to try to cram hardware of that calibur into a PSP, is just Ludacris. but ya i agree, I wish the umd format went higher than 1.8 gb. But when it comes down to it don't we wish we all had memory cards, that had an infinite void in them, that cold hold an infinite amount of space =D

could you say "Full Rom sets" XD.

Well I'm looking forward to the release on this, but I really hope that someone can get news on how much an estimated price on this product is going to be. Because this is pretty kool. I was thinking about getting a Zune player because of its hardrive space, and i wanted to watch anime. But if there is a memory card this big, I'll have enough space to hold plenty of anime on my PSP. And viewing it on that screen will be oh so satisfieing =]

Yeah, it is pretty interesting that the tiny memory stick PRO DUO's can hold more than a UMD disc. Granted UMD's are a lot cheaper but still.

32GB is perfect for the PSP. Considering the iPod can hold 80GB now, the PSP deserves at least 20-40GB.

Oh yah good point about the drive. I didn't even think about that. Maybe they will figure out a way to fit one in a handheld someday but I would doubt that they would actually use mini bluray discs in a PSP.

The ipods I believe have a miniature hard-drive in them, which is where the PSP falls short. Memory Sticks, while nice (and not so cheap) do not have the long track record as HDs do.

The PSP could easily fit a 2.5" laptop hard-drive inside and still maintain its sleak design. And some of those are up to 160 megabytes.

by the time that comes out we will be on like 15.5 FW.
WOw, hope we can crack that...
I really would like to know how much it's selling for when it's released...

no because a hard drive like that requires a external power source, then they would have to modify the fw to support a hard drive... 32gb seems around 2008-09ish to me. I'm still w8ting for my 4 gig to come which was 99$.
