via engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/14/sony-patents-led-infused-motion-tracking-controller/)

While the PS4 might be "just around the corner," and Nintendo's Wiimote is sure to give you all the (potentially dangerous) controller flinging fits you can handle, it appears that Sony's giving the whole "controller innovation" thing another go. Sure, Sony's faced its fair share of lawsuits (hasn't everyone?), and had noticeable trouble with Dual Shock in particular, but the less-than-revolutionary SIXAXIS controller is apparently lacking a heavily-desired feature: motion tracking. We're fairly certain that Sony is watching its toes to make sure the next lawsuit to hit doesn't come from the big N, but its latest patent describes a "handheld controller having detectable elements for tracking purposes," which admittedly sounds awfully familiar. The design looks simply like a revamped version of the current SIXAXIS, with embedded LEDs on the front of the device and an "external camera (Sony's sensor bar patent?) to capture the movements" of the user. After combing through the patent jargon, there's little doubt that the goal here is to deliver a controller that allows gamers to maneuver and react with more than just button mashes, but whether or not this development will actually be realized (or if games / lawyers will end up supporting it) remains to be seen.

Sony never stops copying Nintendo.

Can you imagine when (and IF) playstation4 comes out, what will its controller look like?....... a WIIMOTE!

Sounds cool. Anything to improve the way we play games is appreciated.

i hate how people keep saying sony copied nintendo, they didnt.

the sixaxis is nothing like the wii-mote and motion sensing things have been around in arcades for years, and who can forget the eyetoy camera, i knows its not like the sixaxis or the wii-mote but it was still cool.

Surely you must realise by now that Nintendo fanbois are deluded and have a very short memory? Don't bother arguing with them!

It is all to obvious that you love sony. Buy a Wii. It already improved games the way Sony is trying to steal.

Short memory? It seems to me that Sony would not have entered the market if Nintendo had not given them all the info they had about making games.

Dont think Nintendo influenced Sony in controller design?

Well, look at the button layout on the PS1. Looks like the SNES. Also, the control ports on the PS1 and PS2 look very similar to the SNES.

If sony could design a system, they would have innovation of their own.

if i remember right nintendo asked sony to make them a disk drive for the snes(or one of thoses old consoles), then when sony had finished nintendo said they didnt want it anymore so sony made thier own console.

I played around with the eyetoy camera for a while at a friends house.
It might have been the game he had or something but the whole experience really sucked. No real accuracy and lame games....
Not that original either, since I've seen similar things being used on Tv gameshows and arcades.

and you really should give nintendo some credit for influencing the way we play (or played) games.
Shoulder buttons, analogue sticks, rumble, cordless controllers..... as far as I know Nintendo was first with them all and they where standard on all last-gen console controllers (with exception for cordless) and most of this gen consoles.

to sonys credit I think they where first with DDR and singstar type games

Thanks for proving my point, again.
