Thanks to those 17 million iPads (http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/apple-announces-q3-2012-earnings-tktktk/) shipped in the second quarter, Strategy Analytics (http://www.engadget.com/tag/StrategyAnalytics/) estimates that Apple held on to the 68 percent of tablet market share that IDC credited to the company in the previous season (http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/idc-apple-makes-big-gains-in-tablet-market-android-stumbles/). That may not sound like a change in the status quo, but it's a significant jump from the 62 percent Apple had a year ago -- and not very good news for anyone else. Android is still holding on at 29.3 percent, although that's slightly underwhelming given the surge (http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/14/amazon-kindle-fire-review/) of extra (http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/15/samsung-galaxy-tab-2-10-1-review/) devices (http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-review/) in that time frame. The real hurt was dished out to Windows 7 tablets and "others" like RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook (http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/blackberry-playbook-review/), both of whom were cut down to just 1.2 points of share each in the spring. We'll see if the newer (http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/25/asus-transformer-pad-infinity-tf700-review/) crowd (http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/26/iconia-tab-a700-review/) moves the needle for Android in the summer, although the well-received Nexus 7's (http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/) current scarcity won't help its chances -- and both Microsoft as well as RIM are in holding (http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/18/microsoft-windows-8-ship-date-october-26-confirmed/) patterns (http://www.engadget.com/tag/blackberry+10) for the next several months.
