Korean OEM steams ahead of its US rival with fresh support from Galaxy S III.

However, it should be noted that Samsung has a veritable army of smartphones on the market, which only continues to grow. Meanwhile, RIM shipped just 7.4 million smartphones in Q2, trailing Nokia which hit 10.2 million as it waits to see whether the switch from Symbian to Windows Phone will pay off, while HTC reached 11.6 million.
Daniel Ashdown, research analyst, Juniper Research, said: "Sony should be doing better: it, like Samsung, has a global name and the Xperia brand is well-established but its marketing and products have been disappointing so far."
