Canalys's Q2 2012 country-level shipment estimates stated that China saw smartphone growth of 199 per cent year-on-year and 32 per cent over the previous quarter.
That eye watering growth meant a record breaking 42 million devices were shipped into the channel in China – 27 per cent of the 158 million global smartphone shipments.
Interestingly, the Chinese boom was largely fired by local OEMs like Oppo, K-Touch and Gionee, which collectively shipped 25.6 million units for 60 per cent of the market.
Samsung was top at 17 per cent, but ZTE, Lenovo and Huawei were next. Lenovo grew 2,665 per cent year-on-year.
Apple was fifth, with shipments up 102 per cent year-on-year, but down 37 per cent compared to Q1 2012.

Nicole Peng, Canalys Research Director for China, said: "The rise of the domestic tier-one brands has been aided by a number of factors. Their reactiveness to market demands and deep understanding of local consumer behaviour and preferences have been key in helping them surpass international peers in the fast-evolving Chinese market."
