The store, at Gatwick’s North Terminal, lets users view a range of 80 products displayed on large virtual fridges. Each one has a unique barcode, which can be scanned using a special Tesco app.
Customers select ‘groceries’ from the app. They select a home delivery slot and can book a date up to three weeks in advance.
Around 30,000 people depart from Gatwick’s North Terminal each day and they wait around 70 minutes for flights. This is the downtime Tesco is hoping to fill.
The store will be open from August 6th to 19th. It was all done first in Korea last year.
Ken Towle, Tesco’s Internet retailing director, said: “Our business in Korea is teaching us a lot about how customers and technology are transforming shopping. It gives us a unique window into the future and the chance to try out exciting new concepts.”
