Sony president Kaz Hirai has fired a broadside at Microsoft's Xbox 360, saying that assumptions that the console is as powerful as the PlayStation 3 "simply is not true."

"No other next generation entertainment system pushes the envelope on advanced technology like PS3," Hirai told Blu-Ray Daily in a CES interview.

"People say that a high-capacity game delivery vehicle like Blu-ray isn't necessary in a next generation computer entertainment system. But you just can't expect that 9GBs of storage capacity found on today's DVDs are going to have enough space to hold tomorrow's games, he said. "Resistance: Fall of Man simply wouldn't be possible on any other system without using multiple discs."

Speaking about PS3's launch - and seemingly extending the gaming handbag scuffle to Sony's other competitor, Nintendo - Hirai said that "A worldwide launch for any console is quite ambitious. In fact, it has never been done before. I suppose if we had simply done a mild upgrade to the PS2 and not pushed the envelope so hard, it would have been easier on ourselves. However, if we did that every time, we wouldn't be Sony."

Hirai then touched on the console's manufacturing problems: "I don't think anyone could have foreseen the difficulties we encountered in the production of the blue laser diode for the PlayStation 3, which ultimately delayed the launch of PlayStation 3. We were asking our teams to develop millions of components for the PlayStation 3, like the Blu-ray Disc player and cell broadband engine, that had previously only been produced in the thousands."

PlayStation 3 is expected to launch in the UK in March.

My one question:

Once the PS3 starts reaching half of its power capability, is it going to be possible to cool it?

I'm hoping to see Sony and Nintendo squash the 360's reign in the home console market over the next year.

I hope Sony holds their PS2 ground at least; 720 Million units worldwide is a god damn shit load. And while I do hate Microsoft considerably, I don't wish that any of them fail; because if its down to just two console makers, Sony and Nintendo, it won't be long until Sony comes out the victor and then PS5 could easily be 10,000 dollars, because it will be the only console there is...

There is only 1 360 title that I am looking forward to, and its Halo 3. Yeah, I'll take considerable flak for this I know it, but I am not after Halo 3 for its FPS elements or multiplayer or any of that subpar crap. I want to know the story it has to tell, since I am a fan of the Halo novels and have played the other games for the stories they tell (even though the switching back and forth between the Master Chief and Arbiter in Halo 2 really pissed me off...)

But 400 USD aint worth spending for one game...

I like the fact that Sony is crazy to convince everyone that PS3 is more powerful than the Xbox360 (which indeed it is), when it is the vastly inferior Wii which is giving Sony a good beating.

By the time someone's realised the full potential of Ps3 , hopefully someone will have figured out how to stop it from overheating! (and hopefully we'll have colonised the moon)

Vastly inferior? Are you sure about that? Sony's implementation of motion sensing works FAR BETTER than Nintendo's. PS3 has HD graphics and multimedia playback. Wii- nope.

PS3 you can play all your PS1 and PS2 discs. Wii? Ok you can play Gamecube discs, but thats only because Wii is Gamecube Mk 2.

In terms of sales, the Wii is beating out PS3, but so is 360... In terms of 'gameplaying related injuries' then yes Wii beats the PS3. Broken tv sets from a shitty handstrap on the Wii-mote? You betcha, something that doesn't plague PS3 owners.

As a game system the Wii is pretty good. But it feels as though Nintendo didn't even try. I mean, at least they made a leap when going from the NES to SNES and later to the N64. Yeah the Gamecube was a 'leap' from N64, but the Wii feels like a Gamecube through and through. And not even a Super Gamecube...

Dude, he said the Wii IS vastly inferior to PS3. So you had a rant then to agree with him.
My two cents, I really can't understand Sony's marketing strategy here. It seems they are overly focussed on beating Xbox 360, leaving themselves open to under-respecting the Wii. This could be a bad desicion, what with Nintendo's near perfect start to this console war.

err, its more like 110million ps2 world wide, still a huge amount.

before E3 2006 i thought the ps3 was going to have far better graphic be since E3, my opinion has changed big time, and now i think it graphic difference between the ps3 and xbox 360, is not as big as the difference between xbox and ps2

Errm yeah... Sorry, my bad I read it wrong...

Nintendo had a great launch, but I think Sony realized that Nintendo is no longer a true competitor. Where was Nintendo when the PS2 and Xbox came out? No where that made either company hot under the collar.

And where are they now? Same place really. Nintendo needs to keep their gamer crowd because if they don't they will fail, but it they don't embrace the fact that people want things unified, as in one place to go to do everything they want, Nintendo will find themselves in the can.

Both Microsoft and Sony view Nintendo in the same way "a nuisance" damn near...

I almost feel bad for Nintendo, the whole thing that they were riding on, at least in my circle of friends is quickly becoming the bane of the system; the Wii-mote. My other friend who has the Wii is complaining about it now too. And as I said in another topic, thats only 2 out millions of Wii owners, but I seriously think that Nintendo was banking way too much on innovation here...

And not the right kind. If they threw in DVD playback and some USB ports and the ability to use a new, yet traditional controller on top of the Wii-Mote, they may have had the most perfect console out of any of them.
