also does anyone know how to use a built in wifi (into a laptop) for a hotspot, so my wii can connect to my wifi in my laptop while my laptop is connected via modem?

when there's no driver in the kernel, you can use the windows driver with ndiswrapper.
Just look for ndiswrapper tutorials.

I always just use Ubuntu for that...Atheros automatically gets installed.

Depends on the network card. Sometimes the windows drivers must be "emulated" with ndiswrapper. Every now and again linux recognizes things automatically too. Depending on your distro look in their forums. No doubt someone has asked the same question before.

cardctl insert.

That should work, I have a senao nl 2511 ext2 plus (300mW) perfect for spoofing, wep cracking, wardriving... :D, it works perfect in linux!.
