Via Psxreality (http://www.psxreality.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2163) (and crappy translation)

PSXReality.net presents/displays his to you first application for PSP

One is a version (I believe that improved) of the old MSTest created by MIB42 (done from 0, since we only have the EBOOT).

After to see me “timado” by store online, that I am not going to name until they do not answer to me, in which offered a Memory Stick Pair _SONY_ 2GB High Speed (yes the invoice puts SONY) and I arrive a false one… I began to testear my MS with MSTest and felt that the PSP users we needed something more standardized. So I mounted the development surroundings and this it is the result, PSXR-MSTester.

Functionalities
-------------------
- Test in way batch (to execute and ready) standardized.
- Results kept in ms0: /
- Added standard deviation
- Limitation until 20MB of block (it must not more have sense in PSP)
- Graphical Results (with possibility of recording it in ms0: /PSP/PHOTO)

Within rar you have to part of the LEEME, README (I recommend to you to read it before beginning the tests to the crazy person) the images (also published in the forum here) with a comparative one with my memory cards.

Here are my results for a Sandisk 1GB and a Sony 2GB High Speed (which I suspect to be fake).

1GB Sandisk

2GB Sony High Speed (suspect fake)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/Emeriastone/Sony2GBHighSpeed.png

I bought the Sandisk from Amazon and the Sony from Ebay and the seller is completely dormant last time I checked. Many left negative feedback about fake sticks and he has since stopped any selling.

this is a 4 gb stick formatted today http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=result912007222217fg1.pngfrom ebay.

Wow, that one has terrible read/write speeds. Maybe its just because its a 4GB. Is it Sony or Sandisk?

sinjinn
January 9th, 2007, 22:54
its sony. i knew it had bad write speed because everything takes twice as long. might just becos its 4gb tho. if not im sending it back

Even if it naturally had slow speeds I wouldn't care cause it was 4gb. Send it back though if you want.

i still have a 2 gig stick so its no big deal. somebody should have an official 4 gig stick . then i'd know how it should perform. i have a official 2 gig stick so im gonna check that too

Alright, I formatted both and tried again.

Here's a comparison,
1GB Sandisk -- Full stick vs. Empty stick.

It does seem to make a difference if the disks are full/empty.

I'm sure this is handy for people who are dumb enough to buy memory sticks off of places like E-bay but there's a simple solution; don't buy it from sites like this... buy it from a trusted company or store, ebay is full of scam artists, it's pretty much their home now... Remember people if it sounds too good to be true, 99.99% of the time it is.

Fascinating, my fake 4Gb Stick from ebay is much faster. And i'm sure it's fake, because it has no MagicGate Chip on it.

BTW, it's formatted with FAT16 not FAT32, which should give higher speed. I just format it using FAT32 and post the results:

edit: FAT16 and FAT32 give the same results

yeah i agree, if you dont mind shelling out £75 fot it... its not like we think ebay is the best place to buy this stuff from... it just so happens to be the cheapest (although alot of the time we know why...)
anyway, not everyone on ebay is a scam artist, some people genuinely import memory sticks and undercut the prices of these trusted companies or stores, hence why people dumb enough (like myself) choose to buy there instead

alright this is the same 4gb stick but this time in FAT16. seems faster . i am going to fill it up and do it again to check if it isnt just the amount of data on it thats speeded it up http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/7425/result91200723588ek8.png

and this is the same stick almost full (450 mb free) http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/36/result101200705059hl4.png
semms if you have a 4gb stick then FAT 16 is better than fat 32. the almost full memory stick outperformed the empty one though ????
from what i've seen so far all the 4gb sticks perform exactly the same . All we need to see is a a real 4gb stick . anyone have one of those ?

All of the 4gbs seem about the same. Including the two I just got for me and my friend today. Mine are Sandisk fakes and I got them off of eBay for 50Euro each. The write speed is comparable to my authentic 512mb Sandisk with magicgate, but the read speed is about 5mb a second slower on the 4gbs. So far I've only tested Fat32 and the PSP format. So far the write speed is slightly higher on the PSP format than the Fat32. I'm about to try Fat16 to see what the difference might be there.

UPDATE: Well, Fat16 performs about the same as the PSP format, but I like the incline on the PSP format a little better than on the FAT16 one. While over all the PSP format moves up and down a bit more, the end of it increases a little more steadily.

I'll test transfering a file that takes about 5 minutes on my authentic Sandisk 1gb and see how long it takes. If it's crazy, I'll probably send it back. If it's not too bad, I'll probably keep it. I know it can't be any worse than the original Sony ones. Those were SO slow.

UPDATE2: Just under 8 minutes for 800mb. That's not far from my Sandisk. Not bad! I think I'll keep them. Its only about 3 minutes slower. That's much better than what I feared. I thought a fake would be much worse. I think it was worth 50Euro. It's still faster than my friends 1gb authentic Sony.

Here's the pictures:

(probably fake) 4GB PSP Format:

there is a slight difference in formatting FAT 32 and using the PSP's format

mines a ebay 2g stick, comes up as magicgate unknown, but reasonable results

1st graph as fat32
2nd after format

the psp format gives a slghtly steeper read line (write line speaks for itself)
shame small files take up so much more space (same files on both, 25 meg difference :( )

These graphs mean absolutely nothing to me. But mine look completely different to the ones in this thread, which worries me.

1GB High Speed
Has given me no trouble whatsoever since I got it about a year ago.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Chuthbert/1GBHiSpeed.png

4GB Regular
I just got this for Christmas and it's given me nothing but trouble. Data frequently courrpts (hombrew, savedata etc), it's slow as hell (making the NeoGeo emulator completely unplayable using it) and it doesn't let me start PopStation games that have saves (so I have to use SWCheat).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Chuthbert/4GBBeforeFormat.png

Here is the same stick after a FAT format or something. I just followed the instructions hoping that they would fix the stick but it still has the exact same problems.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v246/Chuthbert/4GBAfterFormat.png

Like I said, comparing it to the other graphs in this thread, I'm really worried. I checked if the stick was counterfit by using some guides that only look physically at the stick and it seems to check out OK.

So I have three questions:

1) Can someone briefly explain what this graph shows? Is a 'taller' graph better or worse than a small one? (I can already guess)

2) Is there anything wrong with my 4GB stick? (Again, I can already guess the answer to this)

3) Is there anything whatsoever I can do about it? I really don't want to have to buy another memory stick.

Please help. I hate to say this but I'm desperate.

1) the green line shows the read speed, and the red one the write speed. the taller the graph is the better.

2) looks like it. i have a 4gb stick which i THINK is fake ( thought im not sure yet) , and its read and write speeds are much higher than , especially the read speed.

3) i would try and return it , and if its been bought through paypal it might be easier . other than that i dont know. maybe sell it on ? ...but that'd be wrong ...

transfer a large file such as a video to your ms , as large as possible, then back to your pc and watch it. some fakes report that the file transfered correctly when they actualy only store the last 128mb or so.

my slowdowns are gone after reformating using the PSP - it was the fat32 causing MINE problems, may not affect your problem at all!

to check if the stick has 'magicgate' you need a 3.+ firmware (ie 3.0X-oe) goto video and press triangle, you can select information

everything i have runs fine from my 2gb.
tekken runs just fine from the 4gb, i did get some lag with lego star wars 2 tho, and pro evo 6 is just horrible,
mgs portable ops is fine as is every extend extra.

yeah alot of my games run choppy but not tekken. could you tell me if outrun, worms, or ys ark of napishtim run choppy for you, becuase thanks to your help i think i may have found the root of the problem which is the fake ms sticks.

anyone know a good bargain for ms sticks, real ones that is.

armoured core runs ok

if you want a cheap one look on amazon, they had some for £41 which tbh is awesome

I have actually dropped 2 psp's *LAUGH NOW* (both times while half asleep zzzzz). I noticed after dropping it the first time that gta (vice city and lcs) stopped working smoothly. I sold the PSP think it was ****ed. Each time I dropped it the memory card went flying out of it. I looked at the memory stick and saw that the pins on it were scratched like a bitch. Check ur pins and see if they're scratched, could explain results like these:

EBAY Fake 4GB - FORMATTED - FAT16 (Normal FAT)
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/6344/ebayfake4gbformattedfatqr6.th.png

EBAY Fake 4GB - FORMATTED - FAT32
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/1524/ebayfake4gbformattedfatmc4.th.png

EBAY Fake 4GB - HEAVILY FRAGMENTED - FAT32
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/583/ebayfake4gbheavyfragmensz9.th.png

Conclusion: FAT16 or FAT32 makes NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL, QUIT THE SHIT! Formatting or defrag will increase performance though. Oh and if you can't see the images then get a bigger monitor or a smaller mother, one or the other.
